Kernel panics after upgrading to OS 10.8.5

I installed the 10.8.5 update on my early 20098 model Mac Pro. I thought it strange that I had to restart the computer twice after the update. But everything initially seemed to work fine after the update. But while I was updating the OS on my Macbook Pro, leaving my Mac Pro unattended for about 45 minutes, I came back to the Mac Pro and discovered that there was a kernal panic warning on the screen to the effect that the computer shut down because of a problem. I was given the option to restart the computer and it seemed to work normally for the next few hours. But when I checked on it the next morning, the same kernel panic message was displayed. I tried starting up in Safe Mode. As far as I can tell everything works well in safe mode, at least for the 3 or 4 hours I left it in that mode. Back in standard boot the kernel alerts started back again. This happens so far only when I am not actively using the computer but when it is left unattended. The computer is set to sleep after 1 hour.

An internet search suggested that there might be a conflict with a .kext file. There are only 5 .kext files loaded at startup that are non-Apple ones. I removed three of them since they were not critical for the use of my computer. But two of the .kext files are necessary for the proper function of the Mac Pro as it is configured. There is an "Accelsior.kext" file that is required for my OWC Mercury Accelsior PCI Express SSD card and two .kext files necessary for my CalDigit USB 3.0 Host Adapter (CalDigitFastIO.kext and CalDigitUSBxHCI.kext). Removing all but the CalDigit .kext files and the Accelsior file did not correct the problem. Next I simply re-installed the 10.8.5 updater. This did not correct the problem. I think I will go ahead and remove the CalDigit .kext files as a trial since I can operate the computer without USB 3.0 for a while. But beyond this I don't know what I should do next.

Here is a copy of the kernel report in Console that was generated with the last kernel panic:

Thanks for any input or help. Unless there is a simple fix I think I will have to revert back to my pre-update backup copy of 10.8.4

I have reinstalled Snow Leopard and then installed Mountain Lion, it downloaded and installed 10.8.5 right from the beginning, after installation was complete i got another Kernel panic at reboot. I had no other software installed just a clean and fresh install of Mountain Lion. Now my MBP boots only if i press CMD-Shift-V but not in "normal" mode. And from time to time neither die keyboard nor the mouse are responding (also not if connected via USB). Since it´s been a while when i checked logs and so on is there a logfile where all POST and Boot messages are stored ??

And is it possible to downgrade from 10.8.5 to 10.8.4 ??

Sep 17, 2013 12:00 PM in response to Concorde Rules

The Accelsior and Accelsior E2 both use Marvell 9230 SATA Chipsets. As we noted, a change in 10.8.5 appears to have broken compatibility with one of the Marvell firmware revisions this chipset shipped with. In the case of the Accelsior.

The 10.8.5 kernal panic is not related to our driver at all. This is confirmed with the same behavior occurring with or without driver installed as well as safe mode boot where no drivers load. The Accelsior driver just gives a little additional time to allow the Accelsior SSD set to finish it's powerdown procedure as we found that the OS wasn't waiting for any go ahead at sleep/shutdown for PCIe connected volumes. Anyway.

The 10.8.5 kernal panic with our 9230 implementation and the noted firmware is only occuring during wake from sleep if the card is booted from. Normal operation does occur otherwise under 10.8.5 if this is used as a non-booted data volume.

No issue exists at all under 10.8.5 with Accelsior cards that shipped with a later firmware version of the 9230.

We currently are, as noted, offering option to return cards for a free update + are working on a field deployable solution as well. I would contact the manufacturer of your controller for assistance. We have reported this as a bug via Apple Developer/or are in the process of documenting and doing so. Ideally - Apple could fix what 10.8.5 broke.

Sep 17, 2013 1:53 PM in response to trytux

I'd like to add one more MBP 3.1 (2.6GHz variant) to the list of casualties with the 10.8.5 update.

I installed a Crucial M4 256GB SSD in Aug 2011 and have had zero issues to date. I installed the x.x.5 update and within 30 minutes had a complete system freeze; no mouse or keyboard function, and the seconds on the clock in the menu bar stopped ticking, nothing short of a hard reset would bring it back. I should add that up to this point the system has performed flawlessly in the 5 years and 9 months I've owned it. Probably 3 gray-screen kernel panics, none of which were in the last 2 years.

I downloaded the x.x.5 combo update and applied that, to no avail. I booted off of my FW-attached cloned backup of my SSD (always have a cloned boot vol handy) and everything was fine (running 10.8.4). I bit the bullet and reinstalled Mountain Lion on the internal SSD as a fresh install using the recovery partition, I did not use the migration assistant as I wanted to remove any existing code as part of the problem. After it completed, I used it less than 5 minutes and it froze (I was actually in the middle of downloading my purchased apps from the App Store when it halted).

At this point I gave up on x.x.5. I reimaged the SSD using the external clone (running 10.8.4) as the source and all is good again. (Shout out to Carbon Copy Cloner for saving me, again 😉) From the comments on this thread, it looks like the storage I/O subsystem is at fault. Somebody forgot to do some regression testing; SSDs are popular choices for older MBPs and should have been in the test plan.

UPDATE: I should also mention that I checked permissions before and after the update, ran disk repair from the recovery partition and after some changes/repairs, the SSD checked out clean. I then reran the 10.8.5 combo update just to make sure the permission updates and disk repairs weren't part of the problem. Still failed.

I also have an iMac 9.1 2.93GHz that also had a Crucial M4 SSD installed in June of 2012 that was updated to 10.8.5 at the same time as my MBP, and it has had no issues. Perhaps some combination of the SATA-1 I/O interface and the interface chips used in my SSDs are incompatible? The iMac is SATA-2.

Hi Larry,

As I thought, your cards and my card use the same chip, the 88SE9230.

However, my testing shows that the card, even if nothing is plugged in to it KPs at/after sleep on 10.8.5, 10.9 DP6 and onwards (didn't test DP 3, 4 or 5) - but I know that I slept the machine running DPs 1 and 2.

Windows however is completely uneffected.

Now that you have noted that you can upgrade the firmware, I am going to attempt that on mine too, otherwise, I'm abit stuffed.

I have the same problem. After update to 10.8.5 my Mac Pro (mid 2010) kernel panic if sleep.

I have a first model of OWC Accelsior as boot drive.

We can upload the firmware to solve it?

9/25/2013 update

re Accelsior PCIe SSD cards with 'MARVELL Raid VD 0' System Profiler reported identity.

Current recommendations are to either return to 10.8.4 OS revision or disable sleep. No other issue outside of wake from sleep occurs and this issue is unrelated to our Accelsior driver. It is attributable to what we have reported as a bug to Apple specific to how the 10.8.5 interacts with a specific Marvell SATA controller chipset firmware revision.

We anticipate a solution in the near future that will be applyable in the field with no requirement to send the card in.

Thanks!

As an FYI - the OS X 10.8.5 supplemental update that came out today - did not resolve the issue with Marvell firmware noted.

At this time - we are continuing to work on a field update solution.

In the interim - we recommend either not updating to 10.8.5 - or disabling sleep to prevent the kernel panic at wake issue.

We are also now providing a $29 -which includes freight both ways- to swap an existing card with a new card with the later firmware so you don't need to deal with down time. and - we have also lowered the price on our E2 Upgrade swap to $80 after trade in of the card you have now:

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/SSDPHW2ES2UP/

The new E2 model provides the same PCIe SSD capability using the same blades - but also adds 2 x eSATA ports to your Mac pro as well.

This issue came out of left field to say the least - and it's impact is not limited to the Accelsior. We're disappointed the supplemental update did not resolve the OS bug and continue to work, as noted, on a field update solution to resolve this should Apple not.

Thank oyu.
