Kernel panics after upgrading to OS 10.8.5

I installed the 10.8.5 update on my early 20098 model Mac Pro. I thought it strange that I had to restart the computer twice after the update. But everything initially seemed to work fine after the update. But while I was updating the OS on my Macbook Pro, leaving my Mac Pro unattended for about 45 minutes, I came back to the Mac Pro and discovered that there was a kernal panic warning on the screen to the effect that the computer shut down because of a problem. I was given the option to restart the computer and it seemed to work normally for the next few hours. But when I checked on it the next morning, the same kernel panic message was displayed. I tried starting up in Safe Mode. As far as I can tell everything works well in safe mode, at least for the 3 or 4 hours I left it in that mode. Back in standard boot the kernel alerts started back again. This happens so far only when I am not actively using the computer but when it is left unattended. The computer is set to sleep after 1 hour.

An internet search suggested that there might be a conflict with a .kext file. There are only 5 .kext files loaded at startup that are non-Apple ones. I removed three of them since they were not critical for the use of my computer. But two of the .kext files are necessary for the proper function of the Mac Pro as it is configured. There is an "Accelsior.kext" file that is required for my OWC Mercury Accelsior PCI Express SSD card and two .kext files necessary for my CalDigit USB 3.0 Host Adapter (CalDigitFastIO.kext and CalDigitUSBxHCI.kext). Removing all but the CalDigit .kext files and the Accelsior file did not correct the problem. Next I simply re-installed the 10.8.5 updater. This did not correct the problem. I think I will go ahead and remove the CalDigit .kext files as a trial since I can operate the computer without USB 3.0 for a while. But beyond this I don't know what I should do next.

Here is a copy of the kernel report in Console that was generated with the last kernel panic:

Thanks for any input or help. Unless there is a simple fix I think I will have to revert back to my pre-update backup copy of 10.8.4

Same here for my MacBookPro (3.1) from 2007. After upgrading to 10.8.5 it doesn´t boot and end with a kernel panic after some time, i tried recovery Mode and as well i reinstalled Mountain Lion, but this didn´t help at all. Will try to install Snow Leopard and upgrade from there and see what happens.

Really a shame...

You need to get rid of the incompatible software. Boot into Safe Mode and uninstall whatever third-party startup items you have installed.

All:

I cloned my boot partition to a Samsung SSD that was already installed in my Mac Pro. I then removed the OWC Accelsior and have since slept and awakened at least 5 times without issue, including a long overnight sleep.

It is clear that this problem is related to something that Apple changed in the 10.8.5 code. It is possible that a variety of things might trigger the problem, but some of the reports here are not specifically about kernel panics on waking from sleep, and clearly those with iMacs and Macbook Pros have other issues.

In my case, the trigger seems to be the Accelsior or its kext. In some sense, this is not really an OWC problem... but I am heartened by their quick actions and concern for their customers. Hopefully they can help diagnose the problem. Its possible that a fix can be made in the kext, but I suspect this is going to require a fix from Apple.

I plan to reinstall the Accelsior this evening and see if the kernel panics return. Until a fix is found, Mac Pro Accelsior users can simply disable system sleep while retaining display sleep. It may also be possible to retain system sleep by disabling "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" but I haven't tried that yet.

Glenn,

Thanks for reporting on the results of your troubleshooting efforts. Your findings confirm that the Accelsior hardware itself (or its associated .kext file) does not play well with OS 10.8.5 in what appears to be a relatively small subset of Mac Pro machines. You have demonstrated that removing the Accelsior hardware and software resolves the problem with wake from sleep.

I agree with you that this is due to something Apple changed in the OS. And I applaud the speed and diligence exhibited by OWC in responding to this problem. This kind of proactive customer support seems to be a rarity these days. It is one of the reasons I have been a loyal OWC customer for many years. I hope OWC has the kind of access to Apple that could lead to a collaborative effort to address this problem.

Ok, so I removed them, no change...

Well, I don't know if this advances the state of knowledge about this issue or not. But this is what I've done and what I've found. I cloned my Accelsior SSD to an external hard drive. I left the Accelsior .kext file in place and I did not remove the Accelsior PCIe card.

After restarting with my external drive as start up, I've had absolutely no problems at all with the sleep/wake issue. This seems to indicate that the Accelsior kext is not directly causing the problem, at least when the Accelsior SSD is not the startup drive. And the mere presence of the Accelsior SSD (when not used as start up) does not seem to cause problems either.

Alright - some good news here. We beleive we have identified the common denominator. Shortly after we begin shipping the Accelsior, we updated to a different Marvell controller firmware rev along which with included proper name identification of the Accelsior. Although these changes were not/should not have had functional field impact, all reports of issue with 10.8.5 and Accelsior with which we have received are indicating this original naming/firmware.

In Apple System Profiler under SATA Devices - if you have an Accelsior installed and this volume listed:

MARVELL Raid VD 0

Please email owc @ macsales.com with your preferred contact information. At the moment the options are as follows:

OWC will issue you a Return Authorization. Within 24 hours of receipt, card will be updated to current firmware revision and returned without charge.

or

Contiune using as is with sleep disabled.

or

Purchase upgrade to new E2 model (adds 2 x eSATA Ports)

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/SSDPHW2ES2UP/

$125 after existing card trade-in.

Further -

We are working on an option to support field update of the firmware and also reporting this issue to Apple. If nothing else, we do hope to have a solution that does resolve this without requiring the card to be sent in.
