MOV is the QT generic file container format—not a video compression format. Any video compression format compatible with the originator's system QT codec component configuration can be placed in an MOV file container. But if you do not have the same codec installed on your system, you cannot view that video. Depending on the codec involved, the file may not open or the file may open but not play. Since it sounds as if you open the file in a QT player, open the "Inspector" window and check the format entry to determine what video and/or audio codec(s) were used to create your "non-playing" file and post that information her along with the name of the QT player you are attempting to use ( e.g., QT X or QT 7 player).

The genereric QT thumbnail icon is normal here since the files you sent me are only reference files—not standalone files. (I.e., reference files are very small files that tell a media player how to play data that remains contained in the original source file.)

Here is the modal message I get when I try to open the file you sent and allow the media player to finish its search for the missing standalone source file:

Basically, it appears that you were using an app called "ProCamera 3.5.5" on you iPhone 4 to edit or modify you video files. This app created reference files that were linked to the original recodings made by your iPhone 4 camera app. If these original files are among the backup files you copied to your hard drive, then all you have to do is reconnect the "orphaned" standalone source files to these reference files or simply use and/or re-edit the original unedited source files. If you don't have these files, then you are out of luck here and will never be able to recover the original video data.

To give you some idea of what I am talking about, your 54.338 second 25 KB "IMG_5450.MOV" reference file points to a 1280x720 (16:9 aspect) H.264/AAC file recorded with a Baseline Profile Level 3.1 video track having a data rate of 10.7 Mbps and a mono audio track recorded at 64 Kbps with a sample rate of 44.1 KHz. These stats are quite normal for your iPhone 4 source file but would produce a standalone file on the order of 73 MBs in size or roughly 3,000 times larger than the reference file you sent me and clears up the mystery of how your files are essentially "empty" as noted previously by Deb.

Hope this helps.
