This happened to me also. I updated to iTunes 11.1 and when I plug in my iPhone 5 (still using iOS 6.x), iTunes doesn't see it. However, my computer does see the iPhone and shows the folder with all my photos, etc.
davidsh_seattle Thank you so much for your help. I, like Dan, registered just to tell you thank you!
Thank you, Thank you, Thank you - worked !!!
Ur a life saver!!!! THANK U!!
For those of who this didn't work you can try plugging it in different USB ports of your PC, Laptop or whatever you are using. I tried everything in this discussion and apple's solution. Last resort was to go to genius bar but i couldnt wait until the next day so i tried every USB port and it worked in the last one i tried. So so so relieved.
It showing me error "Access Denied".
I am using Windows 8.1 cannot detect iPhone 4s ios 7.0.6.
After I have tried many ways, the problem is resolved by close and exit the iTunes and go to Control Panel > Programs and Features and right click at "Apple Mobile Device Support" and choose "Repair". After repaired, my iTunes manage to detect and sync my iPhone again.
thank you so much david, your post helped me solve this problem 🙂
For anyone still having issues with this like i did and i tried everything in this post without avail.
This worked for me - http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/error-code-5 2-usb-ports-not-recognizing-connected/2379017c-d513-478c-a184-0d1b7cd408b2
I kept getting a message about an error code (52) before this but this solved the issue.
thanks!
Thank you so much @davidsh_seattle ! This worked perfectly for me!🙂
You should be knighted.
Thank you - your solution worked straight away. I tried so many others to no avail. I bought a new laptop and installed itunes but it wouldn't recognize any of my ios devices even though windows 10 recognized them.
Worked for me instantly and I have Windows 10 with IOS 9!!
sooo here is my issue
when i Double-click the "usbaapl" file. and hit okay it says the folder doesnt have a compatible driver. if the driver is in there make sure it supports x64. and it is 64 Bit. so i cant do ****

You probably want to start with the full teardown and rebuild listed below:
If your iOS device isn't showing in iTunes try the following:
For step 3 above, open the device manager. Expand any of these sections that are listed.
Connect the device. You should hear the telltale sound of Windows device connection and one section should gain a new entry. That should be your device. It may not be labelled correctly at this stage. If you don't hear a noise suspect a damaged cable.
Or try If iTunes doesn't recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod - Apple Support which is Apple's version of the advice above.
Failing that try a full tear down and rebuild of iTunes as set out in Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates. 64-bit users could also try the alternate Download iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) build which is sometimes a useful workaround.
Or lastly try rolling back to the last build of iTunes that worked for you. See iTunes installers for download links. If you're rolling back from 12.4.0.119 to 12.3.3.17 or 12.3.2.35, for example, then you'll also need to roll back the library database using the method described in Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash. The tip includes suggestions for reintroducing any recent purchases so at worst you lose a few playcounts and/or a recently created playlist.
