iOS 7 and Audiobook Chapters

iOS 7 seems to have removed the ability to view individual audiobook chapters in the music app. It has also replaced the chapter length with the length of the entire book in the time scrubber. When tapping the top right-hand corner to access the list of chapters, now it only shows one file for the whole book, whereas before it listed all the chapters, just like it lists all the songs in an album. This change applies to my own audiobooks created using the Mac Audiobook Builder app and to Audible downloads. I haven't tried it on an iTunes purchased audiobook.

If I manage to lose my place, scrubbing (even using quarter-speed or fine) through a 30+ hour audiobook is...let's be polite and say "challenging." I really liked knowing where I was in a chapter, being able to see how much time was left, being able to view the list of chapters, etc. My hope is I'm just missing something here and some iOS 7 wizard can show me how to correct this. But I suspect Apple's just updated the app.

I'm frustrated with the same issues as audiobooks are a major factor in using iTunes for me. And there have been many folks identifying the same things I've complained about in this thread. I have seen opinions and recommendations about how to best get the word through to Apple. Posters encourage others to take certain actions.

So I would like to know why, when I do a follow up post stating that I am going to write a letter to Tim cook, why was that post removed? How is wondering how Apple would respond to a mountain of snail mail any different than other posters saying "send feedback to Apple"? How is listing Apples Headquarters address against the rules?

There are also posters who deride other posters statements. Some are downright nasty. Those posts are left untouched by the hosts.

I feel like there is some very selective editing going on here.

Thank you for your comment. Beats me what's going on. I'm going to contact Apple to see if I can get it straightened out. I've seen this happen before, not to me but someone else, when there was a big to-do about what iOS 5 did to iPad 1 functionality. That poster was able to get their posts restored by taking it to Apple. Worth a try.

I hate that I finally googled this and found this thread.

This makes me soooooooo angry. First off, everyone here is living the good life and spending the way more extra big bucks to have all this flash Apple pretty-ness and technology, so it's hard to complain without sounding whiny over this stuff. But, we are paying the extra money. That choice is made. And we do want slicker looking apps and infastructure, and up-dating is all well and good.

But - to take away such a vital UX feature, for basically all human adults that use fingers, that was already working in the prior system is nothing short of INFURIATING. People buy macs because they make their living on them which means they spend HOURS in front of them. Get the picture?

I know I pay extra Apple. You are losing your luster, and at this trajectory it is just a matter of time before the masses give up the sleek aluminum casing and get the same machine in a clucky case for half the price.

Tighten up.

for POSSIBLE fix I posted the following:

iOS7 Audiobooks jumping back to a previous session - POSSIBLE fix

In my quest to make the chapter and jumping problems known to Apple in as many ways as possible I called Apple for support. Re: the jumping back problem in iOS7, I was told to go to Reset settings (Preferences/General/Reset/Reset All Settings). I have not NOTICED the jumping back problem since that time. Perhaps this is a fix.....

The new audiobook player is a disaster for me, I am partially sighted and find it impossible to see the tiny red line for sliding. I've tried using the accessibility settings to change the functions to bold and larger but to no avail. I loved the old display, it had chapters, you knew exactly where you where in your book and it was so easy to see. I'm afraid I'm going to have to find an alternative way to listen to my books but I love my iphone and have bought and listened to so many books from iTunes that you would think that someone would be monitoring the forums for feedback. Just to top it off I've just downloaded a new book from iTunes to find that I can't play it since I've updated my phone with iOS 7, just great!

I have used the link above to send my opinion on this subject to iTunes so it will be interesting to see if any changes will be made in line with the suggestions people have made.

Not really happy with Apples latest upgrades. I ride a MC and enjoy listening to audiobooks in my helmet during long rides. For some reason one of my books jumped 5 chapters before I realized the mistake. With no chapter list this screwed up the ride. I don't like the new itunes look either. Before, the pad and phone were shown on the list column on the left and made dragging easy. Now you have to make extra moves

Not exactly a work-around, but thank gosh I still have my old iphone 3GS, which won't update to iOS7. The book function is still intact on it.

Like others on this thread, I use the iphone more for listening to books than for actually calling people, and I sorely miss the ability to see and navigate to individual chapters. Now I carry both the 3GS (for books) and the 4S (for phone and e-mail). How awkward is that?!

Not just the chapter list is broken but also the visibility of the entire app, and why the heck does tapping on what used to be the chapter logo (upper right hand corner) now dump us OUT of the book entirely and into the music library?????

Apple, PLEASE fix this function.
