iOS 7 and Audiobook Chapters

iOS 7 seems to have removed the ability to view individual audiobook chapters in the music app. It has also replaced the chapter length with the length of the entire book in the time scrubber. When tapping the top right-hand corner to access the list of chapters, now it only shows one file for the whole book, whereas before it listed all the chapters, just like it lists all the songs in an album. This change applies to my own audiobooks created using the Mac Audiobook Builder app and to Audible downloads. I haven't tried it on an iTunes purchased audiobook.

If I manage to lose my place, scrubbing (even using quarter-speed or fine) through a 30+ hour audiobook is...let's be polite and say "challenging." I really liked knowing where I was in a chapter, being able to see how much time was left, being able to view the list of chapters, etc. My hope is I'm just missing something here and some iOS 7 wizard can show me how to correct this. But I suspect Apple's just updated the app.

I noticed something else within music playback as well. There is no longer the view by albums that I can scroll through and randomly choose a song from the cascade of covers that more along horizontally. (I forget the name of this view). Quirky too, I played one song by clicking on it, then after that I chose shuffle. Now, no matter what song randomly plays --the correct picture of the song playing shows up while I hold the phone vertically, But if I then turn the iphone sideways, then the first album I started with that session, shows up even though it isn't the song now playing. I guess it must be hard to have all product-programs ready to be released at the same time. But these problems are odd, to say the least. I'm a big Apple enthususiast, but this is very frustrating.

I listen to audiobooks from audible.com and did the following to get the chapter list back as well as the time remaining for each chapter. I found this on another site so I wasn't the brilliant one. I downloaded the audible.com app and am using it instead of iTunes. It works perfectly, just like in iOS 6. There was also another idea from the site that I used. It stated to use "audible player" app from Mario Adrain. The website that they gave was www.148apps.com/app/660933412. I didn't try it because the audible.com app solved my problem. I am a happy camper now.

Ah, anyone else notice that chapter markers in videos are also gone at least the mini icon is missing in the playback ? It used to be between the Next Chapter ">>|" and AirPlay "[^]" icons.

You can tap 'Done' and return to prior / movie summary screen to view chapters, but now it's a bit awkward, as it's portrait view only.

Looks another missing feature :-(

So. The chapter list does seem to be gone, but here's what you do to ensure that your place is saved in the audiobook even if you quit out of the app through multitasking.

Plug your phone into your computer and go to your audiobooks in the iPhone. Select them all and right click to 'get info'.

Then go to 'options' and where it says 'remember position' say yes.

Just tried it and it works.

At least now you guys won't lose your places in the books.

This is becoming more and more frustrating. The same thing is happening to me; that my books are starting from an arbitrary place not where I stopped last. I remember when Steve Jobs first introduced the iPhone and pointed out that it is a phone AND an iPod. Well, the iPod portion of this would-be "great" modern device is broken. And this list attests to that. I now have to write down my stopping location in Notes so I can find where I've left off.

iOS7.03 should be out next week, but I doubt it will address this problem; mainly because I don't believe Apple sees this as a problem. This was an intentional change, part of Ivy's simplification of the OS. Obviously he and his design team don't listen to audiobooks. Dropping chapters, allowing tracks to back-up to penultimate stopping poinjts suggests they possibly don't understand how users interact with their iPhones/iPods. Maybe by iOS 7.1 we might see them wake up.

I only have audiobooks on my iPhone 4 (no music) and after "upgrading" to IOS 7, 95% of the audiobooks are missing. The ones that are there are the oldest ones I purchased through iTunes. I have an open support email with Apple to hopefully re-download the 17 missing audiobooks.

But the new IOS 7 interface is CRAP! Where have all the colors gone! Where are the edges of the buttons and things? The light gray on white interface is disgustingly impossible to see easily.

And the audiobook chapters are not shown, what the heck. Its time to jump ship to Android?

You can change the way type looks by changing the settings to bolder type (also larger type) and by increasing the contrast. The audiobooks purchased from iTunes should be downloadable with any special permission from Apple. You can always re-download purchased items. They may still be there, but in the Cloud. I noticed that all my purchased music has a iCloud icon next to the songs, indicating I suppose, that they are stored there and neednt be stored on my phone itself anymore. Perhaps your missing books date from a time when iCloud was implimented.

This is going to be my final post on this subject. And I have all along been sending them to Apple for feedback as well. In the past, the Apple iOS interface has incrementally improved in regards to playing music and books. When it first came out, the playback head had only one way to control playback location. Then Apple introduced scrubbing which is clever, intuitive and very useful. It was like Apple read my mind and gave me what I wanted even when I didn't notice it was missing or know I needed it. It is one of the aspects of my appreciation of Apple software. But now, when playing a book -- and not having it play chapter-by-chapter -- I encounter my book's timeline at 15 + hours in one line, it has become extremely difficult to control the finer aspects of scrubbing even though that enhancement is still available. One wonders what kind of focus group or beta testing group allowed for this portion of the iOS to be released in its present state. One can only hope it will be hours--or days--and not weeks until this is put back correctly. I'm asking for chapters to be put back.... as well as a thorough testing of playback which has me, from time to time hit play and find that the iphone has been playing on its own for a good while, or find it playing at a previously listened to location and not where I left off. Sort of like finding half a worm in an apple. Distasteful.
