iOS 7 and Audiobook Chapters

iOS 7 seems to have removed the ability to view individual audiobook chapters in the music app. It has also replaced the chapter length with the length of the entire book in the time scrubber. When tapping the top right-hand corner to access the list of chapters, now it only shows one file for the whole book, whereas before it listed all the chapters, just like it lists all the songs in an album. This change applies to my own audiobooks created using the Mac Audiobook Builder app and to Audible downloads. I haven't tried it on an iTunes purchased audiobook.

If I manage to lose my place, scrubbing (even using quarter-speed or fine) through a 30+ hour audiobook is...let's be polite and say "challenging." I really liked knowing where I was in a chapter, being able to see how much time was left, being able to view the list of chapters, etc. My hope is I'm just missing something here and some iOS 7 wizard can show me how to correct this. But I suspect Apple's just updated the app.

I admit to not having read all 100+ posts so far, but I seem to be having one further issue with the new os and audiobooks not mentioned here. That is, the books themselves don't even show up as audiobooks. I download them from my local library as a .wma file, and then a third party piece of software (overdrive media) converts and transferrs them to my iphone. Worked great on my old IP4. Now on the IP5S, the phone shows no audiobooks at all. Instead, the books are now listed simply as playlists, and mixed in with whatever music playlists I may have. Workable but annoying...and yes, ditto the frustration with the previous 100+ posts on chapter issues.

Yes I did, and very sorry for it. Audio books dont show chapters, and i get a screen with squares of artists from my songs. Sometimes I cant even stop my book.

The calendar switches to hourly mode if you click on a day with an event to see what it is. You have to scroll to the time to find it.

If you download it, make sure you complain to apple, under feedback with anything that you are not happy with. This site is not monitored by Apple as far as I know. Someone wrote a reply to me, upset when I used caps, so put problems on apple feedback.

Consider using Tunebite or Audials to convert the files to mp3s, then tell iTunes they are audiobooks. This has the advantage that the files won't expire as they no longer have DRM. Even better, since Overdrive books seem to have the same number of files as an audiobook has CDs, use iTunes to convert the mp3s to AAC files (m4a files). Then use Chapter and Verse to string them together into a chaptered m4b audiobook. Incorporate the art file into your audiobook before Overdrive automatically erases it(Overdrive will erase the .wma files and the cover jpeg when the book expires though not your converted files.) Once you do this a few times, it's easier than it might seem from my description.

I agree with everyone else - BRING BACK THE CHAPTER LIST! Why, oh why, would anyone think that dropping the chapters would be a great update? Someone who doesn't ever listen to audiobooks apparently.

I blindly update to the iOS7 and I'm not totally happy with it. When I found, today, that the chapter list had disappeared it just added to my unfavorable review, thus far. Bright colors and more cartoon like icons are not impressing me.

Please, please bring back the chapter list. In fact, just give me back the old version of using audiobooks and I will be happy.

Tried it and iOS7.0.2 does not address the issue.

However, I learned a bit that is helping. This was discussed earlier in the thread but I did not fully comprehend, so I repeat in my own words here:

  • Tapping on the book jacket picture (and elsewhere) toggles you from text below the scrub bar to stars to indicate your rating.
  • When the text (indicating book author and name) is showing, press and hold this text, EXACTLY in the middle (measuring from left to right) of the screen.
  • You can't see it very well because your finger is partly obscuring the text, but if you hit the right spot the text will change to "High speed scrubbing"
  • Slide your finger up the glass and the text will change to "Half speed", then "Quarter speed" and finally "Fine" scrubbing. You can also slide your finger down on the glass but you will only get as far as half speed and you also risk radically changing the volume slider (Sheesh!)
  • If you take your finger off the glass, you need to repeat this - so in one motion you will need to move up the glass and then move from side to side to adjust where you are in the audiobook.
  • Though it sounds trivial, my fingers are not that slender or accurate and I am often turning the book from play to pause or back 15sec, when trying to do this. With all the space available on the screen it is too bad they crammed all this stuff into such a small space.

Hope this helps until Apple brings back some better functionality....

Yes, please bring back the chapters. I listen to audio books every day and it is quite annoying. I listen before I sleep at night and sometimes fall asleep before I stop playing. When lose my place, it is very difficult to find my place again. The scrubbing in a longer book is very difficult(understatement). The scrubbing line is also annoying, it is so small it is difficult to manipulate.

Also, there is a bug that turms up every now and then and I have to restart the device to temporaritly fix it. So, I am playing an audio book the device goes to sleep. If I swipe to unlock, the book goes back to where I started listening. So If I have been listening for an hour and I unlock my phone, the audio goes back one hour.

I too am incredibly frustrated by the omitting of this simple, and commonly useful functionality. I am also confused as to why they removed the repeat and shuffle functions from Audiobooks as well?! I typically listen to business audiobooks and like to repeat chapters will driving, working at the office or on the plane. CAN SOMEONE AT APPLE FIX THIS PLEASE?????

IOS 7.0.2 is out today and does not address this issue. Complaining in a forum will not get Apple's attention. Filling out a bug report will:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

I did that and also called Technical Support and the Customer Service person opened a "complaint" on what he said was an IOS7 bug. I received a Case number, so I know this issue is being tracked.

But I am only one user. To get this fixed, get your concern/complaint into Apple's system, too. Please.

If any of you are in Europe we have an English Language Audioboko app in the app store called Bardowl that you should give a try. iOS7 has not impacted our chapters. Would love your feedback as its early days for us and you all seem like big Audiobook fans. Its a subscription service like Netflix for Audiobooks. There is a free trial with an hour of free listening but if you contact bardowl and mention Apple Community we will upgrade you so you have a free unlimited month of listening in the trial. After the free period we charge £9.99 per month for totally unlimited access to our audiobook catalogue with 1000's of audiobooks from top publishers like Penguin, Random House Macmillan, AudioGo etc etc.

Sorry for the picth I know what a pain the issue is with the music app I still use it for audiobooks every day but hope that we can help some of you while Apple are fixing the problem
