iOS 7 and Audiobook Chapters

iOS 7 seems to have removed the ability to view individual audiobook chapters in the music app. It has also replaced the chapter length with the length of the entire book in the time scrubber. When tapping the top right-hand corner to access the list of chapters, now it only shows one file for the whole book, whereas before it listed all the chapters, just like it lists all the songs in an album. This change applies to my own audiobooks created using the Mac Audiobook Builder app and to Audible downloads. I haven't tried it on an iTunes purchased audiobook.

If I manage to lose my place, scrubbing (even using quarter-speed or fine) through a 30+ hour audiobook is...let's be polite and say "challenging." I really liked knowing where I was in a chapter, being able to see how much time was left, being able to view the list of chapters, etc. My hope is I'm just missing something here and some iOS 7 wizard can show me how to correct this. But I suspect Apple's just updated the app.

From the developer notes...

Fixed in iOS 7.1 beta 3

Audiobooks now play as expected.

Whooooooooooooooooooooo Hooooooooooooooooooo

Can we now close this 🙂 ... well in few weeks when the final is released.. unless anyone wants to test it. I cannot on my main phone.

So you all know... constant complaining on here 'may' work... but using the offical feedback form actually gets noticed... the more the word AUDIOBOOK came up the higher it bubble up the to-do list. that's the way it is.

Forums for the most part are ******* in the wind... Feedback forms are ******* down a really long tunnel... um... you get my drift...

Both Apple discussions and bug reports are useful tools. Historically, discussions have provided input to Apple in addition to the bug reports.

Furthermore, discussions serve an important role in helping the user community. They are the way users experiencing a problem can benefit from solutions that others may have found. So it's important that discussions exist and users participate.

Well at least there's some indication of progress, thanks onelife2000.

Everyone will have to judge for themselves what got "fixed".

IMHO, Apple has skirted the trials and pitfalls of "mission critical" software releases (i.e., iWorks vs M$ office), but try and tell that to anyone who uses audiobooks - and has spent a good deal ($) doing so, so one has to wonder just how did these snafus leave the barn. My pet peeve aside from the scrubbing snafu is having music album cover art sneak into audiobook playback (landscape mode).

With great changes (iOS7) come great disruptions seemingly known, but midjudged - can you say ObamaCare?

Were I a conspiracy theorist, it almost smells of a mission critical software ploy to break something to see who complains, then if all's quiet move on.

Thankfully these forums will help keep them on mark but really, the whole experience really calls into question quality control, rollout communications, ability to back track, and perhaps a view towards the future.

If audiobooks "pay as expected" means chapters and within chapter scrubbing work again then I'll be satisfied but there isn't enough info to know what the folks at Apple think is "expected:. After all presumably they though treating the entire book as one song "was expected" despite the previous treatment of a book more like an album with chapters = songs.

Unlike some people I frequently end up back a book up anywhere from 5 minutes to more than an hour since I listen while working so if I get interrupted or am concentrating on something intensely I'll need to rewind to where I last remember the book clearly. Bookmarking doesn't help since by the time I realize I've missed something it is too late to bookmark.

This is not hard. The M4B format is a standard just like anything else. Software developers who build apps can decide to support the standard or not. Right now, Apple's implementation of M4B is poor. It's either intentional or not. The worse it is, the more people will use other apps and it becomes a criteria by which people choose another phone if it's an important issue to them. Many many many utilities went away as Apple enhanced their operating system throughout the years. Same for iOS.

Under the simplistic and immature rational of "decluttering", iOS 7 and Mavericks have reverted to the original black and white Mac days and now suffer all the user interface problems we had because of that. Children. Now we have other software developers writing utilities to colorize "Favorites" bars and all that. But these add on utilites eventually interfere with some aspect or revision of the OS making it unstable. It's a mess for users; all laid at the feet of Apple. The are like a bunch of programmers fresh out of high school. GEEZ.

Thanks for the good news

Yes - we are grumpy

Some of us use Audiobooks because of a disability and feel that Apple are moving away from a commitment to Accessibility.

This is a basic smartphone feature that has been removed without any apology.

Some have mentioned that they spoke to the supportline who were unaware of the problem - Sometimes you have to keep phoning - or ask to speak to a supervisor

It is good to know that the feature will be back - but after 7 years with apple and a year of ridiculous problems I am considering going back to Microsoft - who seem to be in the lead on accessibility support

Grumpily yours - Essexman
