iOS 7 and Audiobook Chapters

iOS 7 seems to have removed the ability to view individual audiobook chapters in the music app. It has also replaced the chapter length with the length of the entire book in the time scrubber. When tapping the top right-hand corner to access the list of chapters, now it only shows one file for the whole book, whereas before it listed all the chapters, just like it lists all the songs in an album. This change applies to my own audiobooks created using the Mac Audiobook Builder app and to Audible downloads. I haven't tried it on an iTunes purchased audiobook.

If I manage to lose my place, scrubbing (even using quarter-speed or fine) through a 30+ hour audiobook is...let's be polite and say "challenging." I really liked knowing where I was in a chapter, being able to see how much time was left, being able to view the list of chapters, etc. My hope is I'm just missing something here and some iOS 7 wizard can show me how to correct this. But I suspect Apple's just updated the app.

They are and they are usually more epensive.

I did but a few audiobooks from Apple when they were on sale for about $6 or so. I think one was Carrie by Stepehn King and the audio quality on it was bad. I went over to Audible and bough the same book and it was the great enhanced sound that Audible is known for.

Not sure why the iTunes store was stil selling an audio book with such bad audio qualty.

A handshake with Audible in a smoke filled room would be mean. If this were MSFT and 10-15 years ago, well, that would be plausible. However, it's Apple and it's 2013. Audible is not the only provider of audio books and Apple is not served by the mayhem it's users are forced to endure with multiple audio book apps. Apple's role in the world (self proclaimed and otherwise) is to impact people's lives for the better. When it comes to audio books, they are disdained.

The delay in fixing this indicates a deliberate deficit of some architectural decisions made for iOS 7 that were miscalculations and are now a big deal to rectify. Ergo, yet another bad decision. I've seen this before. Immature narcisistic people promoted too fast. Wisened gray beards take their pension and spend their days on the beach. Youngsters go dumpster diving in the idea trash bin giving credence to bad ideas just because they haven't been done (rightly so).

Where's my sandals... 😁

The Problem is not audible or quality. I made M4B from tons of 192k/128k MP3 audiobooks using Audiobook Builder, because i do not want to handle million of files. I also set individual chapternames to this books ... and Apple? New stupid Design and less functionality than before. Do Apples engineers not know what the Apps have done before?

Im very angry.

Dieterfi, yesterday did you sign a petition somewhere to get the audiobook issues resolved? There was a comment posted here that gave a link to that petition and that's where I saw your name. For some reason that comment is now deleted. Do you think the user deleted it or someone from Apple deleted it? If it was someone from Apple, then it doesn't sound like the problems will be resolved any time soon (otherwise they would have just left the comment alone). It would also suggest that someone from Apple is reading this thread. It's amazing to me that the time & energy Apple would spend to micromanage these forums is not being applied to the stuff that actually matters, like their apps.

A company like Apple on the cutting edge of developing the Iphone and then to remove a feature that is just a valuable as other features and ignore it? If they ignoe the customer that is just poor marketing. It's almost like changing plugs, or going from power pc to intel chip, and then it has to be after 2006 or so to get lion up date and the a mid 2010 MacBook Pro won't have air play, is this fair play? I do love the Apple product but if they don't respect the customer, someone else will, and that is good for the customer, a squeeky wheel!

That was me with the petition. I didn't recall that it was against the terms of service to post links like that here. Got a nice email about it; as a board admin myself, I understand. I suppose you could do a search for it. Audio book chapters are an important feature of the IOS and I'm very disappointed with Apple for:

  • Seemingly letting designers make decisions without reference to use cases.
  • Slow response and poor communication about broken features.

Form over function is poor design, plain and simple. Make is useful and beautiful.

I thought silence was going to fade as the rule of customer relations when Tim Cook took over, but maybe not.

Thanks Michael, a few retorts:

I have also gotten better (but not good enough) at the scrub bar but find it nearly impossible to read, even with my old man glasses. If i find the right light and read and remember the time before i cover up this information with my finger and try to scrub, it sometimes works out. I still think this qualifies as "impossible" at most times.

I bought Duke's app and sometimes had the same jump back problem that i sometimes get with the Apple app.

But the real reason I am responding here is your the comment that Pages was actually updated (unless that was tongue in cheek?). This program has had the feaure that shows two pages at a time ("two up") removed in the latest version. Continuing the fine tradition of making their Mac OSX as skimpy on functionality as the iOS lite they are producing. It seems they are really perhaps inadvertantly killing there computer hardware business, or at least finally give creedence to the WinWorld's complaint that Apple is not a serious productivity platform. I really wish there was a decent alternative OS out there, I have never been so frustrated with Apple.
