iOS 7 and Audiobook Chapters

iOS 7 seems to have removed the ability to view individual audiobook chapters in the music app. It has also replaced the chapter length with the length of the entire book in the time scrubber. When tapping the top right-hand corner to access the list of chapters, now it only shows one file for the whole book, whereas before it listed all the chapters, just like it lists all the songs in an album. This change applies to my own audiobooks created using the Mac Audiobook Builder app and to Audible downloads. I haven't tried it on an iTunes purchased audiobook.

If I manage to lose my place, scrubbing (even using quarter-speed or fine) through a 30+ hour audiobook is...let's be polite and say "challenging." I really liked knowing where I was in a chapter, being able to see how much time was left, being able to view the list of chapters, etc. My hope is I'm just missing something here and some iOS 7 wizard can show me how to correct this. But I suspect Apple's just updated the app.

I just spoke to a "Senior Advisor" at Apple who told me that this was the first he had heard of the Audiobook issues with iOS7 (i mentioned the chapters issue, the impossible scrub bar and the jump back in time glitch). Please send feedback, and if you have time, call!

Please post address for feed back that goes someware, because I and other have, just wonder does it go anywere? If you have a phone# post it and I am sure not just a few will call!

While I'm as eager as everyone else for Apple to get back on the ball and fix their problems, I'm not going to hold my breath. With that in mind, I appreciate the folks who've recommended "Bookmobile", and also "AudioMark". Neither of these apps are perfect, but both offer some good features, and both of them offer better support for audiobook chapters than Apple does.

Several people have already commented on Bookmobile, but "AudioMark" has only been mentioned once that I'm aware of. I've just noticed that it supports showing individual chapter artwork, and this is the only iOS 7 app I'm aware of which supports this valuable function. Bookmobile doesn't, although the author says he intends to add it.

I've built a lot of audiobooks which include individual chapter artwork, because I compile conferences into audiobooks, and photos of the individual speakers at the conference really add a lot - IF you can actually see those photos when you play the audiobook.

Audiomark also seems to support reliable bookmarking, at least it remembered where I left off when I went back and forth between different audiobooks. The big weakness with Audiomark is that it doesn't support moving around within an audiobook very well. If you want to jump to the start of any chapter, that's easy. If you want to go back a few minutes, to repeat something, you're out of luck. There's a scrub bar, but like Apple's new one, it goes for the full length of the book, not just within one chapter. As many have stated, that really makes it useless for navigating within most audiobooks.

Kudos to Bookmobile for a simple, clear and precise way of navigating within audiobooks, and kudos to Audiomark for displaying chapter artwork. Hopefully both program authors will keep upgrading their apps. If Apple won't support audiobook lovers, I'm happy to support whatever app writers will still support us.

I'm wondering if the feature request should be for chapters in the UI or chapters in the soruce content. I have the Audible App on my iphone and the audible content from itunes appears to have only one chapter. This suggests that iTunes audible content may not have been encoded with chapter data so that when it shows up in audiobooks in iTunes or in the Audible app itself that the apps don't know there should be chapters.

Having said that, in the Music app on my phone forward and back a track seemed to somewhat work to go between chapters. In iTunes on my iMac it seems to want to go to the next book/song etc.

A lot of us make our audiobooks from CDs we get at local libraries, using apps like AudioBook Binder. When I do so, I can verify that the completed audio file has chapters. They show up in iTunes, QucikTime Player and on my older iPod Touch. But they do not show up on the iPhone running iOS 7. So the issue isn't Apple's encoding their versions without chapters (for all I know they get the audio files directly from the publisher); the issue is the Music App's inability to recognize the chapters, and to show them, or allow us to interact with them indiviually. This change was deliberate, but done without consulting users.

What's also interesting to me.

In the android version of audible, you can select to navigate/view either per chapter (as old iTunes music app) or per whole book (the new iTunes music app).
