iOS 7 and Audiobook Chapters

iOS 7 seems to have removed the ability to view individual audiobook chapters in the music app. It has also replaced the chapter length with the length of the entire book in the time scrubber. When tapping the top right-hand corner to access the list of chapters, now it only shows one file for the whole book, whereas before it listed all the chapters, just like it lists all the songs in an album. This change applies to my own audiobooks created using the Mac Audiobook Builder app and to Audible downloads. I haven't tried it on an iTunes purchased audiobook.

If I manage to lose my place, scrubbing (even using quarter-speed or fine) through a 30+ hour audiobook is...let's be polite and say "challenging." I really liked knowing where I was in a chapter, being able to see how much time was left, being able to view the list of chapters, etc. My hope is I'm just missing something here and some iOS 7 wizard can show me how to correct this. But I suspect Apple's just updated the app.

iTunes strips out the Audible chapter marks. If I download through the Audible app all my chapters are there and work properly but if I transfer to my iPhone using iTunes it strips out the chapter marks. Even on ones that I have had prior to iOS 7. I've had to redownload directly through the Audible app to get the chapters back once iTunes have touched the audio book file.

I strongly concur with the request for Apple to reinstate the chapter functionality for audiobooks. I would not have upgraded to iOS 7 had I been aware of this major regression in function.

Until this changes I will use the "Audible" app and it has now replaced the native "Music" app as one of the four apps on the bottom of my iPhone screen. It can read any book loaded through iTunes on an iOS 7 iPhone, or you can download books directly from your Audible library to your phone. I don't know how it would deal with books created from CDs.

Not only have they done away with the very useful chapters feature, I find that after a few hours of non-play, my iPhone no longer remembers what I was last listening to. I click on my earbud remote, expecting to hear my audiobook pickup where it left off, but instead, I get a random music selection from iTunes Radio. This is not an improvement, Apple. I don't want random music playing. I want the last thing I played to pick back up just like it used to. Anyone have a fix for this?

It may be the only remedy is to seek user driven solutions.

I myself prefer to purchase audiobooks on CDROM and assemble using iTunes and ChapterMark (http://labalpha.com). Then you can control size, quality etc. yeah it's a bit more work but I only convert what I'd listen to repeatedly.

There are few good titles worth the effort and I've a supply to last quite a while, but can they at least ditch album art in landscape mode? So much for attention to detail.

p.s. You when you control the content you can be in a better position to control deployment, the device used, and mitigate hassles. Of course the losers (vendors) - you'd think would voice a concern, but like a lot of things, voting with your wallet is easily understood.

So sadly one by one we will find alternative solutions. Like I wrote, vintage CDROM audiobooks are cheap, easily converted and offer the greatest flexibility *and* offer a backup ;-).
