iOS 7 and Audiobook Chapters

iOS 7 seems to have removed the ability to view individual audiobook chapters in the music app. It has also replaced the chapter length with the length of the entire book in the time scrubber. When tapping the top right-hand corner to access the list of chapters, now it only shows one file for the whole book, whereas before it listed all the chapters, just like it lists all the songs in an album. This change applies to my own audiobooks created using the Mac Audiobook Builder app and to Audible downloads. I haven't tried it on an iTunes purchased audiobook.

If I manage to lose my place, scrubbing (even using quarter-speed or fine) through a 30+ hour audiobook is...let's be polite and say "challenging." I really liked knowing where I was in a chapter, being able to see how much time was left, being able to view the list of chapters, etc. My hope is I'm just missing something here and some iOS 7 wizard can show me how to correct this. But I suspect Apple's just updated the app.

I sympathize with you as I go back and forth between an iPhone which I listen to while I'm exercising and my nano which I listen to when I go to bed and early in the am so I can charge my iPhone fully overnight. Now going back and forth is much harder. Further use of Audible's app shows that it only displays chapters when the Audible book is downloaded directly by wireless from Audible. All books on your device loaded from Tunes will not display chapters, even if they are Audible books.

There is a trend towards pretty interfaces with less functionality. I have had Yahoo as a home page since the company started and could always display all my stocks and the weather in several cities at a glance. Yahoo has totally destroyed that functionality and I now have to have weather, news and financial displayed from separate sites.

EB959246 - Have you checked to see if you can download your Overdrive audiobooks directly to the Overdrive app? Your librarian may be able to help you resolve this. My local library (Portland, OR) recently made a new contract with. Overdrive and 3M Cloud for digital content, and cancelled Library2Go and, by extension, I can no longer download ebooks in Kindle format. But Overdrive seems to have expanded the number of available audiobook titles and their built-in audiobook player, while not ideal, works for audiobooks from them pretty well. I don't know if the formats offered to patrons through Overdrive are determined by their contracts with different libraries, so it might pay to check with your reference librarian. Good luck!

Well, i got 'Mario Adrian's Audiobooks Player' to work even with Audible books now.

I enabled the two DRM options in 'Settings', 'AudiobookSync' and now it plays both Audible and my own audiobooks with chapters and all.

Well, actually, for audible files chapters only work for files downloaded directly to the device, not when synced with iTunes.

The app crashed a few times when testing this. I also had to stop the app completly (pressed homebutton twice, then pressed the app icon until it started shaking, then pressed the X on the icon.

Well, not really making headway here. I've found settings on my iPhone for Mario Adrian's Audiobooks Player and and enabled both DRM options. I have been trying to find "AudiobookSync" but I can't discover that anywhere. I suppose most people discussing iOS issues are more computer / iPhone literate, but there you are ...

By the way, when you say that Audiobooks Player only works for "files downloaded directly to the device", do you mean via the Audible app?

Thanks!

AudiobookSync is the app name, you have probably done right. Enabled 'Use iPhone Music App' and 'Use App directly'.

Did you remove the app from memory, not just closing it?

I mean downloaded from iTunes Store on iPhone.

I don't know if it work for files downloaded via Audible app.

I never buy from audible or other DRM files, I create my Audiobooks from CDs or indovidual files from iTunes.

Ah well, I've got an Audible membership and prefer buying my audiobooks from them. I'll delete the app from my phone to see what happens. Thanks for taking so much trouble!

Update:

Deleted - downloaded, nothing is changed. I'm afraid that for the time being I'll just have to put up with having to use more than one audio app. I've been able to fix the most immediate problem using Mario Adrian's audiobook app, that is having reasonable chapter navigation for the audiobooks I use in language class. All the same, I'm still hoping to see an iOS 7 update very soon.
