Hi all, like many thousands (if not millions) of others I too have the same issue of thousand of old emails flooding my inbox ever since
I upgraded my iPhone 4s to iOS 7 using my very old fashioned and seemingly unpopular, pop3 emails. In the words of Julia Roberts, big mistake, big, huge. My poor 4s only had 8GB. After upgrading to iOS7 my inbox started filling up my phone, to the point that I was told a number of times a day that my storage was almost full. Thank you Apple to telling me the bleeding obvious. Deleting the account, as many have suggested, for me is only a temporary fix. 2, 3, 4 days later I was back to full storage. Each morning I would be greeted with 2500 or so new emails. Many who have replied to this post can't understand why it's an issue when, as they say, we should be aiming for "inbox Zero".
Can you indulge me for a moment?
In my case my pop3 email is set up by my employer. We are an IT firm doing first level support. We have multiple office locations over multiple time zones. Each office is responsible for their own group of clients. However, our clients email a single address for support for all our offices ie support@....com. I don't care about emails for the other offices on a day to day basis. So they remain unread. however, and this is my point, they form a tremendous knowledge base for all our technicians and so they remain on our server. I leave my emails in my inbox until the problem is resolved, then move all to a resolved folder. Each day I place the emails for our other offices in a separate folder and mark them all as read. So at any given time I am close to obtaining the elusive "inbox zero".
However, I have no control over the server, in fact I'm not even sure who does.
So recently with a mixture of anticipation and fear I had the opportunity to upgrade my phone. iPhone 6 or Samsung S5. My boss was keen for me to stay with iPhone as everyone else in the company was also. With Julia Roberts ringing in my ear I upgraded, to the iPhone 6, hoping against hope my problem would go away. In a sense it has, as I have gone for a 16GB iPhone, so now it's taking a lot longer to full up the memory, that's a positive hey....
But the underlying problem remains. The main storehouse of my emails is my laptop and I only need the phone for when I am out of the office or after hours. So I only need to see that days/nights email on the phone. If I want to search, I use my laptop.
IMAP is not an option as I'm not allowed to remove any emails.
So given that Apple is incapable or unwilling to service the needs to thousands of their customers. I went looking elsewhere.
First to my phone retailer, to see if I could swap my still shiny iPhone for a Samsung. I almost had to call an ambulance since Hi Ed,
was in such pain after his laughing fit.
Second to the local Apple store, 3 staff members, their accumulated brilliance could only offer, "Gee that's unusual!" Helpful as a brick these guys.
Then third trying a bunch of other email app's so I could ignore the useless lump of an app Apple have the gaul to call "Mail'.
So far I've used probably up to 20 or more. While reading countless reviews the best seem on longer to be in the app store. Seed Mails and Evo mail seem to be favourites of many, until they weren't.
So of the 20 or so I've tried none have been able to satisfy my need to have a little storage on the phone for myself. Most were due to the fact that they don't support pop3 and those that did you couldn't limit the amount of emails that came flooding in.
However, today I have had a "Eureka moment" trawling through the mind numbing morass that has been this post, someone suggested trying "AtlaMail". With the sounds of the hallelujah chorus ringing in my ears, I found it. It was only small and tucked away but I found it none the less. Under my settings of my email account, in Advanced, these it was "Usage". Innocuous, I know. But could this be the holy grail I have been seeking to for these 2 years past. Could my quest be at an end...yes I think it is!
Usage is set by default to "no limit" but also has options from 100Mb to 10Gb. Hallelujah!
As an aside to Apple, this is all we are asking for...... either based on size or number of emails.
And for those out there, that are in complete control of their email, just add an option for No Limit, rather than take a much relied upon setting away.
Ok so I'm labouring the point I know, but "AltaMail" could be my savoiur. Maybe it could be yours!
