I think iOS 7 may have just bricked my iPhone 4s

I just now tried updating to iOS 7 from the previous version. Installation seemed to go fine at first, then I got a message saying that there'd been an error and when I tried to turn it back on again I just get an image of the iTunes logo and the iPhone USB connector.

I assumed this meant 'connect your iPhone to iTunes via USB', and I've done that, but nothing's happening.

I paid £500 for this around one year ago so I will be livid if it's bricked. Is there anything I can do to fix this?

Just got back from the Apple store where, after waiting for an hour after my scheduled appointment, I was told that the update to 7.0.4 from 7.0.3 bricked my 4s and there was nothing they could do...except sell me a new iPhone. "Sometimes the stress of an update just exacerbates an existing hardware issue." As someone who has a classroom set of iPads for my Jr. High students that I use every day and a bunch of Apple gizmos around the house I have been nothing but a solid player in the Apple ecosystem, but I think it's time to abandon the IOS debacle and jump back into the fun, open source, world of Android. Thanks "Geniuses"...
