After upgrading to iOS 7, all of the emails in my account are showing as unread on my notifications but they aren't there to actually read/mark read. So I have a notification that says I have literally over 40,000 unread emails. I am extremelly anal about notifications on my phone, and it's already driving me nuts that I can't clear them...Can anyone please HELP?

All you have to do is go to the desired email, and in the top right corner, it should say "edit". Press the "edit" and it should say "mark all" in the bottom left corner. Press "mark all" and it should pop up 3 options ; "Flag", "Mark As Unread" And "Cancel". Once you press mark as unread, give it a few seconds and all of the emails should show up read and you won't see any more numbers on the email app.
I understand what everyone is saying as to fix the sync problem. The problem I have us that when I delete emails from my phone it used to do the same thing in my hotmail account. Now when I log into my hotmail account on a computer I still have all the emails in my inbox that never actually got deleted. It's like the phone & my actual email are not synced. How do you fix that?
Yes, you have to hit Mark All as read under the Edit feature, then you go back into Edit and delete them all this will prevent more from uploading that are old emails, also, change settings to one day vs. one week to save emails.
this was spot on ..just add you have to go back in and then delete all messages.
I tired that remedy and it didn't work. I went to the Apple store twice to replace Iphone 4s. They pretended that they didn't know there were problem. OMG. Any other suggestions? It only is happening with the POP3 account with Cox.net.

How does this work? I have 10000 unread my emails and the mail app constantl downloading my emails causing my email app and iphone to crash. The mail app literally eats the remaining storage i have left on my iphone causing it to crash.
How do I keep the mail app from not downloading as many emails ?
I tried the marking all as read, than doing it again marking it as read. It works temporarily but after I go back to the home screen ,, all of my unread emails reappear in the thousands .
