Heelsmj, You are only half right.

The text messages do go away if you delete them. Yes you free up some space. What we're TRYING to tell you is there are HIDDEN items in the CACHE that do not delete. PHOTOS sent via text message being the main culprit.

I know this is a FACT because I do NOT save my text messages for any length of time. I have a conversation with someone and at the end of the day, any and all text messages are deleted. When I used Moe's iBackupBot it found HUNDREDS of images stored in the CACHE that never went away. No texts, just the image attachments. Some as far back as 5 years.

Settle down and accept that you might be mistaken.

Go take the free trial version of the app and give it a try for yourself. You might be surprised unless you never, ever sent a photo via text.

"There is no hidden cache and all these steps are not neccasary just delete all your convos from the messages app and the data will be gone."

1. The first thing everyone would have done to free up the memory is delete their messages. A fool would realise this.

2. There IS a hidden cache. I had 800mb that was still being used after deleting all my messages.

3. All these steps WERE necessary as without doing them I would not have cleared this memory.

4. Your statement wouldn't have helped anyone because they would already have tried to do what you said is the fix. Pathetic. Extremely pathetic.

5. Thank you agian to Moe for all your help..

Moe rules on this one.

I wish this support board allowed for Private Messaging between users. This place is kind of "cold" like this.

@heelsmj - for the last time and I truly hope you get this, it's not the text messages that clogged up things. It's the hidden images. Instead of trying to tell two pages of people who disagree with you that you are right, just use the **** app and see for yourself.

The ONLY way you can be 100% right is if you never sent a photo via text. Period.

It deleted the attachments but when I go back and use a software such as Dr. Fone or another recovery app my deleted messages can still be looked up. My main concern is that I had deleted messages on my previous iphone4s which i backed up and then recently got the 5s. So i wanted to know if the deleted messages from the 4s will appear on my 5s hidden cache since I used an icloud backup to restore the new phone.

by "deleted messages" , do you mean MMS (text has any kind of media) or SMS (just texts) ? i haven't use these kind of apps, so i don't know what kind of texts they recover.

About the icloud backup , my iphone icloud backup usage was about 1GB , now its about 150 MB ( i deleted the backup and made a new one after removing all the imessage cache )

I have already posted on several other apple forums as if your like me and have had an I phone 5 16gb and have over the past 13 months have been sending loads of pictures via text and email, when you go into settings/ general/ usage a large part of your memory is taken up in saved text messages ( I had about 3 gig) also in saved emails I had 2.5 gig both trapped in the I phone cache which you can't access.

I like most others have searched forums to find an answer to get the valued memory back I firstly found that most people found the Ibackupbot worked so I gave it ago however on the last step it kept saying that I didn't have enough space to restore my phone. The problem is that you need quite a few gig to restore your phone but when you only have 13 gig to play with when you first have your phone and then nearly 5 gig trapped it don't leave much space to play with so I found that the Ibackupbot didn't work for me as I believe that process works better with a 32 gig phone as you have loads more memory to play with.

After loads of digging I found these two techniques to get your trapped storage back.

Text cache

Before you start the process check how much memory is being used in usage on saved text messages I also synced my phone with I tunes ( not sure if it makes a difference).

1. Select Settings > General > Spotlight Search

2. Un-Check Messages in the Spotlight Search

3. Delete all text messages that show in the Messages app

4. Open the multi-tasking bar by double tapping on the Home button

5. Close ALL running applications

6. Restart your phone

Remember to reset your phone by holding the on/off button and the home button until you see the apple logo then go back in settings / general/ usage and see if the storage has reduced. ( every time I repeated the above process I noticed that a chunk of memory was given back to me it took me three times and I had freed all 3 gig.

On the third go I did delete all my current texts but a small price to pay to get 3 gig back.

To get email cache back

When I went into my sent emails even though I had deleted them all it said at the bottom there was 935 unread emails and in spot search you can still see my old emails I had sent months ago but you can't access them.

I have a hotmail account so this what I will use for my example. Basically make sure you uncheck mail and texts in spot search then delete you email account in settings/ mail.

Don't worry as all your emails you want to keep are still in the hotmail main server as your phone is only an access point to see your emails (for hotmail anyway) so reinstall your email on your phone in settings/ mail and you can upload your emails back from your inbox.

I now have 5.5 gig of space back an can install some of my apps and not worry about taking pics and videos

I hope this helps let me know if you get stuck

Cheers kurt

I followed your guide. But step 4. Restore backup didn't work. I get the message saying that there is not enough space on my 64 GB iPhone to do a restore?!

I Managed to delete 12 GB in old files I don't want (5 GB MMS attachments, 7 GB videos) with iBackupbot. But I only got 2,3 GB free only iPhone?! How can this happen? I restarted the phone and everything. The files are now gone in iBackupbot but I still only have 2,3 GB free space. The messages still say 5,3 GB if I check in usage. Even if I removed all attachments?

Please advice.

Thanks,

Mattias

This has been a godsend. I was unable to receive MMS Group texts (non iMessage) or picture messages (again, non iMessage) completely. This occurred around the time I switched my iPhone 5 from Verizon to T-Mobile. T-Mobile claimed it was a known issue on the iPhone 5. Apple store said it is a network issue. I switched to Verizon. Issue remained. Verizon looked at all the logs and opened a ticket to resolve it. Clearing the messages cache solved the issue completely. (I had 1.5 gigs, approximately.) It appears I was out of memory in my MMS folder and no longer able to accept the additional data.

This really needs to get picked up by Apple moderators and applied to all forums regarding the not receiving group text or picture message forums.

Thank you so much.
