Music not syncing after iOS 7 update

Yes, Apple IS aware of this issue! We can only Guess and Hope when this Issue gets fixed! They are under NDA, and I doubt this is their Top Priority. But it MUST be Fixed!

This NIGHTMARE SLOW SYNC Issue started for me ever since my Update from iOS 6.1.3!!!!

Initially they tried to blame 3rd Party Content and its Enconding for the Slow Speed of Copying. In my case it is Audio Hijack Pro.

Apple Senior Advisor suggested that I Convert my Audio Hijack Pro MP3s into AACs, so that those Songs are Re-Encoded with iTunes.

After I performed Speed Copying Tests with Apple Senior Advisors watching my Screen in real time, I was able to prove that the Improvement in Speed of Copy was very slight, totally not worth the effort!

A different Test proved that this issue is not caused by my Numerous Smart Playlists, no File Sizes, GBs!

It's just the Number of Songs! Most people don't have Tenth of Thousands of Short Songs/Tracks, Small File Size like I do!

In my Case, it took Days for me to Copy 25,000 Song! I had to break them into 2500-4000 Batches!

As an example, approx. 4000 Songs = 1.5-2GB could take 6-7 Hours in overnight Sync!

The earlier Syncs went faster, approx. 20 Songs Per Minute, The later Syncs, when I got to approx. 15,000 on my iPhone 4S, slowed down to 6 - 5.5 Songs per minute!

I have ENDLESS DETAILED LOGS on this Case!!!!

In short:

Do all your Big Number of Songs Syncs overnight, NOT During the Day! Why? Because you can't alway predict How Long the Sync will take!

In My Case, I eventually got pretty close Estimates of How Long the Sync would take to Finish! Here is the Formula ( / = Divide)

Take a Note of the Sync Music Number ( After your Add New Songs, Playlists etc - Minus What The Number was Before Since Previous Sync)

Divide Sync Music Number by Speed Per Minute Multiplied by 60

2400 Songs Added / 6 Songs Per Minute = Number of Minutes it should take to Finish this Sing!

2400 Songs Added / 360 Songs Per Hour = Number of Hours it should take to Finish this Sing!

2400 / 360 = 6.66 Hours!!!!

Depending How Many THOUSANDS of Songs you have already Synced, it might take 10-30 Minutes before you see UGLY WORDS "Waiting for changes to be applied" go away!

Then you get "The Good News" - Copying XXX of xxxxxxx.

At that point you can go to ABOUT Menu on your iPhone, and you'll see the Number of Songs on iPhone Increasing. It's best to write down that Number before you start the Sync.

During the Sync, Copying XXX of xxxxxxx, you can toggle the About Menu and use a Timer on iPad, in my case, or some other timer, to see How Many Songs has copied in 1 or 2 or 5 minutes! Then you Multiply those Numbers, so that you know How Many HOURS the Sync could take to Finish!

1 x 60 = 60 min

2 x 30 = 60 min

5 x 12 = 60 min

This also Helps to Improve the Speed of Sync:

Clean Out your Duplicates, but be careful! Not All Duplicates are REALLY Duplicates! You can have the Same Song Name, yet Different Versions of it, with maybe even Different Durations! Unfortunately, the Sync might NOT be very Smart, and thus it'll take Longer for it to Sync!!!

Worse Case, in the Next Sync, the Sync might Change its INTERPRETATION of its Previous Sync, and will try to Re-Sync A Big Number of Songs that It Already Synced!!!! That is another Reason to Sync ONLY Before Going to bed, because you never know when you will get such an Ugly Surprise!!!

Missing Files is another Suspect that could Confuse the Sync!!!

I've offered to a lot of Details to Apple on this Sad Case, but after MANY PHONE CALLS and Screensharing, with their Top Advisors, they didn't seem interested! Maybe that means that they already know what is wrong and will eventually fix this!!! We can only hope so!

Restoring as New, then from Backup, then Breaking into Smaller Batches to Rebuild Our "House Of Cards" Music Content on our iOS Devices - that is what we'll have to do till this Issue is Fixed!

With 54 Pages in this Discussion alone, which is one of several that I've seen on other sites - Apple can't pretend that this Problem doesn't exist!

Next time you speak to them, mention this particular Thread, so that they don't forget about us:)!

iPhone Settings:

Settings > General > About > Songs

The Number of Songs might say "Loading", or and it will Toggle quickly every few Seconds between "Loading" and the Number of Songs... If it doesn't Toggle, and just shows word "Loading", then you can Refresh that Number of Songs by Tapping on General, then on About!

Beware, when you are back on the About screen, the Number of Songs might dispappear Quickly, and you'll see "Loading" instead. So try to remember and or write that Number of Songs quickly, before it disappears

Then it's like Taking Pulse, Blood Pressure, you come back in 1 or 2 or 5 or 10 minutes, do the multiplication and figure out your Copying Speed Per Hour, before you go to bed! That way you wake up to a "Good News", instead of "Waiting for the Changes to be applied", or "Waiting for items to copy"!!!!

Having these Time Estimates really helped me to deal with the Frustration caused by this collossal waste of time!!!

Other than this Sad Issue - I LOVE Apple, and I can't wait for them to Fix this finally!!!

Apple must have their Reasons why they use that "Conduit", "Pipeline". But, even then, it's probably just a a matter of them Optimizing the Code behind that iOS Sync, so it's More Efficient in Processing such Large Number of Songs being Synced! Finding Bugs in the Code must be a Huge Task, so we can only wish them luck!

I am on iPhone 4S, and I am not sure how much Faster this Sync would be if I had iPhone 5S, which has a Faster Processor. The Lightning Plug is still the same USB 2.0. Hopefully the next iPhone will have USB 3.0 Lightning, and, with a Faster Processor, all my THOUSANDS of Songs will FLY through Syncs! Such is my Dream!!!!

Other than this Sad Issue - I LOVE Apple, and I can't wait for them to Fix this finally!!!

I did not try iOS 7.0.6 Update that came out today! The True Test to see if that latest Update fixed this Issue would be:

Update my iPhone 4S to iOS 7.0.6

Back it Up

Restore as New Device

Restore from Backup

But then if this Update did not improve this Slow Sync, then I'll be stuck with yet another 5-6-7 Overnight Syncs, trying to bring back my 25,000 + Songs onto my iPhone 4S!

So, I'l just probably run this iOS 7.0.6 Update and keep an eye on my Future Syncs! Then, hopefully iOS Update 7.1 will be even better, and then, but only IF I HAVE TO, I'll do this:

Restore as New Device

Restore from Backup

But, I hope that long before then there were enough really tech savvy people who read my Comments as of today. Then maybe they can "go first":)! and report the Good News to the Rest of Us!!!!

Meanwhile, I just wanted to share my experience here, so that maybe it'll help others deal with their FRUSTRATION, while Apple's Best Guns are On This Case!

It simply shouldn't have to take a WEEK worth of Overnight Sync to Transfer 25K Songs = 19.54 GB from iTunes to iPhone 4S!!!

If I chose to buy a New iPhone every week, I would have to do this Every Week, break it my 25K Songs in batches to bring All My Music? That would be Crazy!!!!

A Permanent Real Fix Should be found!

Yes, Apple Top Advisors told me that Apple Engineers are aware of this Issue! It's been Escalated to the Top!

As far as the Conspiracy Theories - Apple wants us to Buy from iTunes, and thus is making it difficult to Sync 3rd Party Content!

That is NOT TRUE!!! Apple just wants us to buy as many DEVICES as Possible! They already know that we can get Songs from Amazon, Spotify, Pandora, and not just from iTunes Store!

The Bottom Line is:

iOS 7 Sync doesn't work as smoothly as the Previous Versions of iOS!

If the 3rd Party Content Songs work FLAWLESSLY in my iTunes on Mac, then those very same Songs should be just as Welcome on my iOS Devices as they were under iOS 6.1.3. and Sync Flawlessly!!!

If I can Copy my entire iTunes Folder, 118 GB, with 55,523 Items in it, to another HD (7200 PM) in about 28-30 Minutes via Firewire, connected to my MacBook Pro 17', with SSD HD, then:

WHY does it take 4 hrs : 51 min : 10.8 sec to Sync / Add 1.09 GB = 1542 Songs ????!!!!

Yes, I understand that TCP/IP is a "THINNER PIPELINE" than FireWire 800, but still:

4 hrs : 51 min : 10.8 sec to Sync / Add 1.09 GB = 1542 Songs

vs

entire iTunes Folder, 118 GB, with 55,523 Items to another HD (7200 PM) in about 28-30 Minutes???!

That Speed of Copy Difference is beyond Night and Day!!!!

Hopefully, Apple will FIX this Issue, and in general VASTLY IMPROVE the Speed of Syncing of All our iOS Devices!!!! That way we'll go back to saying Steve Jobs' Legendary words:

ran into the same problem not long ago and havent had a chance to getting a fix till today

after reading a few post from others it seems like some was working for some while others couldnt get it to work

i just decided to uninstall itune and reinstalling it again (without restarting the computer) and it all seems to be operating back to normal again with the songs syncing correctly

There might be a little Speed improvement wiith this iOS 7.0.6 Update, but I can't say for sure!

I definitely got better at keeping my very explicit Logs, and I see some "hope" through that, because it gives me Predictability, where I can Estimate almost to minute when the Large Numbers of Songs Batch will Finish Syncing!

I am even more certain about my Conclusion:

The Speed of Sync has little to do with the GB's Size of the Total of Songs that are being Synced!

It's the Large Number of Songs that the Sync takes too long to process!

The iOS Sync is not a straight Copying via USB or WiFi, like it would be in Finder! It's going through TCP/IP Protocol, but I don't know much about that, and how it effects the Speed! Maybe Apple uses TCP/IP to better control Security to protect iOS? But I don't care!

My recent Batch was 3833 Songs = 2.89 GB

It took an Overnight Sync = Finished = 9 hrs : 15 min : 57.7 sec - or sooner!!!

My Raw Estimate was:

3801 Songs added / 633.48 min = 6 Songs Per min Average Speed for this Entire Sync

But it turned out to be

3833 / 633.48 min = 6.05 Songs Per min Average Speed for this Entire Sync

0.05 sec x 3833 Songs = 191.65 sec / 60 sec = 3.194 min

So, the "sooner" = 3.194 minute faster than Overnight Sync = Finished = 9 hrs : 15 min : 57.7 sec ??

Basically, knowing the Speed of Copy, and thus having the ability to PREDICT when the Sync would Finish, really helped ME to deal with the FRUSTRATION of this SLOW SYNC!!!!

So, re: the Name of this Thread / Topic - Music not syncing after iOS 7 update -- my GUESS is that it's NOT TRUE!!!

What I think is happening is this:

The Sync is VERY SLOW

Users Lose Patience and Quit, because these Stages/Steps of the Sync take too long:

Waiting for changes to be applied

Waiting for items to copy

But, if the users look in iPhone Settings > General > About, and keep Tapping to Refresh the About, they will see that the Number of Songs • IS • increasing, which means that the Songs • ARE • being Copied!

The "SOLUTION" is PATIENCE!!!

Do these Large Number of Songs Sync Overnight!

Start Early, so that, if you need to leave in the morning, you are not stuck waiting!!!

Do the Math to Estimate the Sync Speed, so that you can Predict the Finish Time!!!

For me, my 25454 Songs will take 3 Overnight Syncs!!!

The SAD AND SCARY PART is this:

There is NO CERTAINTY as to How Long that House Of Cards will last! I.e. Here is my Example:

2 Days ago, all of a sudden after a few days of OK Syncs, my Sync would Unexpectedly get stuck minutes after the Previous Sync that was Fast and OK! I am pretty sure WHY that happened:

I did that 2nd Sync, that got stuck, about 1-2 Minutes after Starting iTunes!

There was a Podcast Downloading RIGHT DURING the Sync!!!

Those 2 Activities COLLIDED!!!

Ironically, this happened right before I was about to do this iOS 7.0.6 Update!!!

So, when I saw that "Collision", by looking at my Recently Added Playlist, I saw that Podcast Trying to Download, while the Sync was trying to Sync!

After I Quite that Sync, I saw that my iPhone 4S lost 17 GBs? almost ALL my Music!!!

So, rather than do another Sync, and let my iPhone 4S and iTunes "argue", I did my usual fix:

Restore as New

Restore from Backup

Doing it that way quickly Erased Everything, and gave it a Clean Start in about 30 Minutes!!!

Then I Unchecked All Music, and Split my 25454 Songs into 3 Overnight Syncs!!!

So here is my I HAVE A DREAM:)!

Dear Apple:

Please give us a More Stable and Faster Syncing of Large Number of Songs!!!

The Speed of Sync should be about the GB's Size, not about the Number of Songs!!!!

I should be able to Fill Up my 64 GB iPhone 4S OVERNIGHT even if each of my Songs is a 10 SECONDS Voice Memo, or whatever Content!!!!

If I am using this great app, Audio Hijack Pro to Record my Voice Memos, it SHOULD NOT MATTER!!!

For 2 Days after this iOS 7.0.6 Update my iPhone 4S was Syncing and Working OK. Then on Day 3 I saw some Strange Symptoms of Instability! For the First Time EVER I Saw my iTunes displayed this prompt:

"Could not connect to this iPhone. The device is no longer connected."

It happened suddenly, as my iPhone 4S was plugged via USB, directly into my MacBook Pro 17'.

I was not even Syncing!

The iPhone 4S screen was blinking!!!!

The iPhone Icon in the iTunes was flickering On and OFF!!!

I Unplugged the iPhone, and Restarted iTunes.

The same Symptoms were still there!

I Shutdown my Mac, and did the Soft Reset of my iPhone 4S, by Pressing and Holding Power Button!

That Fixed the Problem!!!

No I wonder if I would have done this iOS 7.0.6 Update if I knew that I'd be seeing such Scary Prompt:

" Could not connect to this iPhone. The device is no longer connected. "

Maybe I would have just waited till iOS 7.1!!!

It's not a fun feeling to be constantly questioning the Stability of my iPhone Sync, and how long it would be before I get an Unexpected Long Sync, when I didn't make any changes since a Fast Sync Finished OK a few minute prior!

Obviously, SECURITY is PRIORITY ONE for Apple, and that seems to be the Theme for this iOS 7.0.6 Update, but we can only hope that Apple is definitely looking into the Entire Music Sync. That is what top people at AppleCare told me! And I hope Apple is focused on the Stability and not just Speed of Music Sync!

Right now I am in the Middle of a Sync, 20372 + 3587 = 23959, and tomorrow night I'll finish the last Batch on the way to 25454 Songs, and build on from there. But…

I simply don't know WHEN that House Of Cards of a Sync will Fall Apart, and I'll have to Start ALL OVER AGAGAIN, from the Beginning:

Well reading this now, formerly with an Iphone 4s, IPAD etc.. I am so glad I made the choice to ditch Apple!! This has gone on way too long, still no solid fix, works for some, not for others!! Very, Very poor customer service and ethics from Apple!! Please be patient.. Well Apple this is a consumer product, and 7 months isn't being patient!!

I guess the stock will be rising for the Samsungs, etc of this world, has there ever been a bigger commercial own goal than this?? Somehow I doubt it!!

You say 7 Month, which I think means that you started having this or similar issue even before iOS 7. My issue started INSTANTLY after my Upgrade from iOS 6.1.3 to iOS 7.0.4!

Either way, I STILL LOVE APPLE, and, even with all it's faults, at least there are HUMANS to speak to at Apple Stores, or on the phone with AppleCare! WHO do I call, if I need help with Android! I am not even going to waste time on that Debate, hint hint!

And how do I know for sure that you are not a TROLL playing Games? Obviously, neither one of us can prove that one way or the other! I hope you are not!

The have a TONS of other Priorities!

(and all from IOS7) I was also one of original posters on this thread so no Troll either!! I am just extremely unhappy about this issue (syncing), basically it worked fine till the (Apple) broke it!! The humans as you call them have NO answers in my case, I just don't buy all this 'Happy Clappy Love in Crap' in any other business especially a small one trhere would be serious commercial consequences for their behaviour here, they just seem to say 'We are Apple, thats ok deal with it'.. Sorry I don't buy that!!

Non tech savvy??? Hello.. What was tech about the sync before hand.. You plug it in it works!! Even dummies like me could do it.. So why are we in some inferior?? Logs mean nothing, basically it worked, it should still work!!

Apple support is at best patchy and by the sounds of it Geographically selective in its help and response, bottom line is with all the kings horsemen at present humpty is still broken, so I am not sure what that says about the collective mind power and will of said Company! Im a HUGE fan of Apple products but over the years they have been slowly dissappointing me with one thing or another. The biggest for me was what they did with Final Cut Pro. When they came out with Final Cut X it was like a souped up version of iMovie. I have heard they have made some considerable updates since its debut to make it more professional like FCP 7 was. I still don't know why they felt they needed to come out with a brand new system but that is a conversation for another forum.

I agree with you can take your product into an Apple store and speak to someone about whatever is going on. With Android you would do the same thing except go to the place you bought the phone. I used to have issues with my Droid and I would take it into a Verizon Wireless store.

I am hearing rumors of June 2014 release date for the iPhone 6. If thats true, I wonder if they will come out with a iOS 8 or just update iOS 7.

My biggest gripe with iOS 7 so far is not all of my music is syncing and the other is my battery will go from 100% to zero in a matter of a few minutes if I am using my camera or recording video! Its insane how fast my battery goes down. Closing open apps doesn't really seem to do anything to save me battery power either.

Apple just released iTunes 11.1.5 with fix for device connectivity issues.

My phone has been syncing for about 5 minutes so far (taking a long time copying diagnotic info), but fingers crossed.
