OK, i have an update on my problem - just to keep you all up to date, my iPhone 5 was freezing after the ios7 update in all applications (mail, settings, facebook, etc).

Went to the Apple store, and they "ran iOS diagnostics, observed the issue, device was freezing in front of me. Customer is aware that device is out of warranty. restored from DFU mode, restored as a new device.

Steps to Reproduce: observed the issue, restored from DFU mode, restored as a new device, still freezes

Proposed Resolution: Replace device under customer satisfaction as a one-time exception"

In other words, they couldnt fix it. I was 6 days out of my warranty on the phone and the store approved a replacement phone. I am on the replacement iPhone 5 and it is working without any problems. FINALLY.

The puzzle is starting to come together.

"When an app supports [Background App Refresh], Apple says that iOS 7 will examine your usage patterns and determine the best time to download updates for that app in the background. If, for example, you open the New York Times app every day at 8:15am to catch up on your news, iOS will notice and make sure that the new content is downloaded before you’ve opened the app. It’s not quite “true” multitasking in the sense that apps aren’t allowed to do anything they want at any time, but it sounds like it can create a pretty convincing illusion."

It's a new feature in iOS 7, and it tries to learn from your behavior. This could explain why some people are only getting the freezes in the evening, and others of us get it throughout the day. Some of you probably use some app only in the evening (Weather maybe?) that iOS tries to refresh for you and something goes wrong.

I know since I turned it off across the board several days ago, I haven't experienced a single freeze. I think we have enough evidence to conclude that Background App Refresh is the culprit. I hope we hear something from Apple about this soon.

I had the same issue as well (locking up as I was trying to enter my 4 digit passcode to unlock). A few times per day. My iPhone 5 (T-mobile) never locked up before I upgraded to IOS7. I'm at 7.0.2 now.

Extremely frustrated, I did a Google search and found this thread.

Sure enough, I turned off Background App Refresh for the Weather app and my phone hasn't locked up since. Been a couple days, so I think its solid. I imagine that Apple will eventually have a fix for this, but until then, I'm thrilled to have a workaround.

A HUGE thank you for those that posted in this thread. Great information. I really appreiate the help!

An update to my situation: My phone was mostly crashing while it was sleeping (i.e. would not wake up), or when I would try to unlock the phone it would freeze for a minute or so and then reboot. And, once in a while it would crash while opening an app.

Things I tried:

Reset all settings

Restore from iTunes and then restore my backup

Restore from iTunes and set up as new phone

Upgraded to iOS 7.0.2

Disabled all background app refresh.

None of the above worked. On my 2nd trip to the Apple store they replaced my phone with another 5, which has 6.1.4 on it. No problems, but then again I didn't have any problems with 6 on my original phone at all. Debating on when I should man up and try to tackle 7 again. I have 90 days warranty on this phone.

Thanks for this. This offers a good explanation for the timing thing (and why we were seeing different crash times). BTW, I still haven't had a crash since disabling background app refresh. When I get a chance, I'll try enabling all but weather and will report back what I find.

Quick update.

With background refresh off since 9/26 I have not had a single issue.

I've tried re-enabling all but weather and so far have had no issues within 24 hours. It's interesting to note that before I dioscovered this thread I had problems with the weather app in general. It would display the weather from yesterday and generally not update appropriately.

My guess based on this discussion is that there's something buggy about that app in particular.
