Possible fix: Turn off Traffic, in location services. Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Services > Traffic

For me, my iPhone 5 always freezes on the lock screen. I noticed that the loction services icon always seems to be present when it crashes. Perhaps just a coincidence, but I did a little sluething and experimented with turning off various locations services. Ever since I turned off Traffic (which was one that was being accessed in the lock screen) I've had zero freezes. It's been three days so far. I also have Frequent Locations turned off, although that was turned off previously and it still froze.

These are both features I'd prefer to use, so hopefully there's a software update in the future that fixes this. Otherwise, I'm looooving iOS 7.

Just an update. I tried disabling the trafic location service, but it still freezes. It seem to happen only in the late evening (say after 10:30pm, pacific time), but it happens pretty much every day since upgrading to ios7 (it never happened with ios6).

I have exactly the same problem with my iphone 5 when upgrading to iOS7. It freezes once a day now. I also noticed that the location services icon was on (after reading GuyInSF's post on 9/24/2013) and am about to try that.

My iPhone 5 has also been freezing often ever since installing iOS 7. It just happened again as I was attempting to unlock the phone right after I entered 2 of the 4 unlock code values. The phone was in its charging dock. It wouldn't accept any more unlock code values but did respond to pressing the power off button by blacking out the screen. It then wouldn't turn the screen back on, so my only recourse was to hold both buttons until the count of 13 when it finally shut down. After a minute I turned it back on and it restarted and is acting normally again for awhile. The phone has locked up with a black screen at least once a day since installing iOS 7. It eventually reboots itself if I don't go through the hassle of doing the above steps right away. Sure hope Apple can fix this soon! Also glad that I did a web search for "iOS 7 freeze" and found this discussion so I know that it's not just my iPhone 5 that is now acting this way!

I did this a few days ago and it did not help with my issues (mostly won't wake up from sleep) but I have seen the phone freeze while using it, then watch it reboot itself 2 minutes later....

Sorry to say that turning off the Traffic option didn't work. My phone froze up again just now. The screen lit up for a notification and then went black, as usual. A few moments later when I pushed the Home button, nothing happened. Same with the power button.

Very disappointing. I guess a Restore is next.

I left the phone alone for awhile, I came back and it was responding again. I'm not sure if it rebooted itself (is there a way to tell?) but now I wonder how often it may be freezing while sleeping that I don't even notice because it recovers itself before I touch it again. I've also noticed, since I keep my phone sitting next to me on the desk, that it will sometimes appear to wake itself up, with no notification coming up. It just shows the lock screen for a short time and goes to sleep. I wonder if this is related.

My iPhone 5 froze completely after attempt to download ios7.  All I got on the screen was a picture - ISB cord with male end, arrow pointing up and iTunes logo.  After about 5 minutes phone would turn off, I could turn it back on but only got same picture.  Nothing else worked.  Connected to iTunes on computer, got box that said it couldn't do anything because phone needed to be restored, clicked OK, another box saying that if I restored I would lose everything.  Ended up calling Apple, was instructed to "restore", so I did.  After about 35 minutes it was completed, got same message, same screen pic as before.  Went to AT&T, they attempted everything that I had already tried, nothing happened.  Apple called me to see how things went, needless to say I wasn't a happy camper and I told them everything that had transpired.  I was informed that it must be a hardware problem.  Sent phone to Apple for repair/replacement (thank God it's still under mfg. warranty) and got a Go phone (I hate it) while my iPhone is ill.

So, after my first post, I tried all different suggestions (Restore, Restore DFU, change password to Numbers only, turn off documents on iCloud,etc...). Nothing worked. Still had like 3 to 4 "freezes/reboots" per day.

I contacted Apple and they ran a diagnosis test and told me to go to an Apple store and made an appointment to me.

As pointed by others, they will replace your iphone, no questions asked.

So, if you are still trying all different solutions, I recommend you to go to the Apple store and let them know.

    Hope that helps.

Another update. Mine seems to freeze every evening (but not during the day). The problem is I hit the home button, it turns on and either before or during entering the passcode it freezes. Nothing does anything although hitting the top power button makes the screen go black. After that, the phone is completely unresponsive until I do a cold boot (simultaenous home and power button hold for a while).

So far, it hasn't happened during the day.

Given that the phone was fine with iOS6, and that after the ios7 upgrade it happens only in the evening, I'd guess that this is a software problem, and that some service (or daemon) that kicks in at night ends up crashing the phone.

Interesting. It only happens in the evening for me also. It always freezes at some point between the unlock swipe and entering the first digit or two of my pass code. This definitely seems like a software issue. It seems stupid to replace the whole phone over this.

I resolved this problem on my iPhone 5.  I turned off the background refresh for most of my apps & only left it turned on for a few that I thought really needed it.  My phone hasn't crashed since.

  • jbapple444 Level 1 Level 1

Yes. It seems there are multiple possibly unrelated issues people are discussing in this thread, but the problem both you and I (and a few others here) are having seems to be identical.

After a full restoration, I still had some freezes (less actually).

Disabling background refresh seemed to fix the issues.

No crash so far for 3 hours.

  • vergence Level 1 Level 1

I disabled background refresh and have had no problems for over 24 hrs.

    Settings>> General>>Background App Refresh

The only services aside from Apple I had enabled were Google and Google Maps. I turned off refresh and had no problems. I re-enabled and got locked out of my screen within an hour.

I have a 4S and am assuming it's either an app glitch ot an issue with my phone-- hopefully I can renable when my 5S arrives.

guys disable the background refresh, like vergence said. I did that and now my iphone  5 works with no problems. It hasn't froze once.

I tried everything and my iphone continued freezing. There is a new 7.0.2 update but im on iOS 6.1.4 now and i dont know if i can go back again. I live in Argentina and there is no support here so if its goes wrong i will not be able to use my iPhone again
