There are about a handful of postings here about some iPad 3 owners who have had pretty poor experiences with the iOS 7 system upgrade.
Based on a lot of the bad issues reported in these few postings, I was very apprehensive about updating to iOS 7 and went a whole month without updating my iPad 3 solely based on the poor performance of iOS 7 reported in these postings.
There are a few things I still do not like overall about the "look" of iOS 7, but the amount of new functionality and some of the cool features really outweighed some of the issues I had with some of iOS 7's look and feel.
So, about two weeks ago, or so, I decided to risk it and download and install the update.
I always sync and backup my iPad on my Mac over iTunes. So, I decided to do the download and update with my iPad 3 connected up to my Mac and iTunes.
I have the older iPad 3 with the original 30 pin dock connector.
My report is that my iPad 3 is running great on iOS 7!
The download and install went off without any hiccups.
I have not had to turn any new features off other than some normal iOS features I leave off ,per app, like notifications and location services for apps that really do not need it.
I have not had any issues, freezes or crashes to date and eveything is still running well.
The iPad's screen has always been too bright for me. So, when inside in normal or nominal light conditions, my iPad was always set for 50% brightness or so, anyways.
With iOS 7 being more white, I have reduced my iPad's brightness setting down to around 40% or so.
The setting is below the 50% setting.
This reduces eye strain, plus increases the battery life of my iPad.
I am sorry to learn of iPad 3 owner/users whose iPads have been rendered near useless by the update.
I am curious to learn if this affected the older 30 pin dock connector iPad 3s or the newer generation Lighning connector iPad 3s.
So, despite what has been reported here, the operational and performance issues of iOS 7 are not affecting all iPad 3s currently in use.
