Well it worked for all of 10 minutes. Don't know if me reconnecting the WiFi had any bearing on it. The only other change I made was the wallpaper. Come on Apple get an update out quickly.
This is my last comment on this subject, for now. I did another reset after which the typing was fine. I then went into settings & reconnected my WiFi after which I tested the typing again & found it was down to a crawl. So reconnecting to the WiFi is causing the problem. I am using an iPod on which I do very little typing so I will wait until Apple come up with a fix. I expect to get that fix within a reasonable time; after all Apple equipment is expensive & I expect the service to go with it.

Thank you for suggesting the following to fix the super slow texting on the iphone 4!!!
Settings>iCloud>Documents and data and toggle the switch from off to on, then back to off again.
After doing this is works GREAT! Thanks
