What are you talking about? When an iOS update is made available on your device, you get a little red badge on the Settings icon. You click on Settings, and you see "General" showing that little badge with the "1" in it. Then you click on General, and you see "Software Update" showing with the little badge with the "1" in it. You click on Software update and you get a page that looks like this:

Are you saying that this is not how it worked for you?

Wow, that's amazing. Maybe one of my esteemed colleagues on the community here can let me know if I am the one who is misinformed.

I have never on any of my iPhones or iPads had any iOS update that just said Updates available with a yes or no button an no information.....

If anyone can verify that what you experienced is valid, then I will be happy to apologize to you fully.

What you are describing is completely outside anything that I have ever experienced.

Cheers,

Allan,

Can you shed some light on the question about how iOS updates are initiated? Were some users simply sent an "Updates Available" notification that they could click on "Yes" to install iOS 7?

(see my post at the top and middle of the page if you are so inclined. That is how I thought all iOS updates were done. Am I wrong?)

Thanks,

GB

Your experience seems very strange, I know that with iOS 6 if the phone is plugged into the power and connected to WiFi (say while charging the phone overnight at home) and during this time it does it's regular (weekly I think) check for iOS updates and finds one available it will download the update in the background. It won't install it, it just downloads it.

Then when you wake the phone up in the morning or whenever it will notify you that there is an update available and ask if you want to install it. I thought that if you said yes to that it then took you to the Settings>General>Software Update page as shown above and things proceeded as described previously. Unfortunately I've only ever followed that update path once, some months ago with the 6.1.3 update I think it was, and I can't remember the exact sequence of events now.

When you experienced the original failed update to iOS 7 were you connected to the internet via WiFi or cellular network? Had the phone been charged recently or was it maybe charging when you got the update message?

I was connected by cell network.

I cant remember If I charged it the night before. I have the charger on a timer so if its low I attach it before going to bed. It could have been.

I dont know how rare this problem is but the Verizon store didnt seem surprised and fixed the phone part quickly. The apple support desk person said he had been dealing with "a lot of these" whatever that means. He then walked me through several steps and cleared up many problems.

At this point its academic because Ive fixed most of the problems. Here are two screen shots of the recurring problems. The flashlight shot is ongoing and is the only one that remains. The other is a shot of another app I sent to its support desk and it helped them. I get the white bar on the screen wanting an input and there isnt anyway to enter.

This is more to the general group overall, not directed at anyone impractical.

Let's start by everyone slowing down, stopping the trolling and calling others liars. Give everyone the same respects you'd like to be shown. There are always possibilities that are experience are different for each of us, but to troll with the attitude that these other adults on here don't know what they're talking about, isn't helping. That said, if someone eggs you on, ignore them. Eventually people will get ignored enough that they'll either quit and leave, or become constructive.

Now, everyone isn't having issues. While some just don't like the new look, but we should all agree that instead of being the guinea pig(s) for fixing a iOS giving people problems, an option should exist for those have issues to back grade. This won't hurt anyone that isn't having the issue, which would stop the name calling or trolling from occurring. There are issue that are occurring, but to ignore the customer asking for the possibility of back grading is hurting Apple's customer experience. This makes me wonder whatever happened to, "the customer is always right?" It does appear, from where I sit, that asking to have a phone back graded is what the customer is asking, but Apple refuses to listen.

As for my experience, I'll start with my phone.

  • Some of my playlists haven't any music on them. I've tried over and over to plug in to repair and to check the playlists on my MacBook Pro, but they just won't show up. Not the end of the world.
  • I record several of my lectures in college and yesterday found that one was now blank. Not even sure why, but never the less it's only a title without the recording now. That's not something I can tolorate. I need those lectures and I blame Apple for the screw up. It's never been an issue until iOS 7.
  • Slow... no matter if all the programs are shut down or not. Sadly, for those of us using an iPhone 4 we'll either have to accept this kind of performance for now or upgrade are phones.

Now, I'll tell you what I like and don't like.

  • The look is to childish looking for my taste.
  • Dislike all the white. It takes very little innovation to strip the color out of everything in my opinion and call it new. IMHO
  • Things on the new screens seem all jammed to close. My fingers just seem to big for the small spaces and often are. (don't be a troll)
  • Missed text messages. Enough said...

Well, I have more to say, but just don't have time.

Please, take the time to consider thinking of writing Apple a message on their feedback section or call them Like I did. The guy I spoke to said that he'd send along all my concerns... I sure hope someone listens...Because it doesn't seem like Apple is listening to their customers..

The customer is always right needs to return..We're paying to much not to be heard anymore.

I have logged on to this site for the first time today simply to say that ios7 is the worst load of S**t apple have ever come out with and I am furious that it seems it can not be uninstalled. It has all but ruined my phone. It does not have a single redeeming feature at all. And can I also just say, having read through everyone's contributions, that I share the deep frustration of others and that I wish people gale from main would go away since she obviously is not someone who wants to uninstall ios7 and has had nothing helpful to say on that account. If I wanted to talk to an Apple apologist I'd go and talk to dome over zealous young geek in a blue t shirt at my local shop but I don't, I just want the product I paid £500 for working how I want it to work!

Thanks to CNet and Apple, I have turned off almost everything and the battery now keeps the phone running just about all day, Not all day, but almost all day. So I'm grateful for that, and am looking forward to learning where all those items are that I turned off so I can learn which ones I can afford to turn back on.

I've been noticing the indignation jive on this thread. I've wondered if it's so hot because of the contrast between this download and some of the other fabulosi Apple has turned out for so many years.

I'm also remembering that Steve Jobs, their driving spirit just left the planet—not even a year ago. Learning how to reach the same heights without that kind of leadership isn't an overnight process.

So I think Apple has hit a big bump in the road, not fallen off a cliff. I for one intend to support their reestablshing the level of service I've been used to, because I think they can do it—and also because I don't have a lot of confidence that I can find it anywhere in the PC world.

I installed this on my iphone 4.. i have now gone from a phone i loved to a phone i now hate and i am willing to bet that there will be an influx of iphones hitting ebay... what were they thinking when they slapped this on the citizens of the world...... As far as im concerned ios 7 is the biggest software screw up since Windows screwed up with Vista..... it seems that Apple has put us all in a position where everyone gets what no one wants..... i just hope i can get good enough money for my phone to finance a different one.... im going back to Android ...my biggest mistake was leaving them in the first place.......

Apple need to be real careful, they may be one of the big wigs of the phone world but they can easily be toppled.... just ask Nokia about that... Nokia were once the mobile phone giants of the world and where are they now... maybe apple should keep that in mind.

I talked to tech support. No chance of downgrading. they want me to reprot it to engineering. I told them, I will ditch the phone and get something else.

The emails, text messages, contacts are nearly impossible to read, even with changing the settings. the contrast is not significant enough. the User interface is poorly designed, the icons are too hard to see. The neonish colors are hard on the eyes. I dont have a vison problem or need glasses. I guess they want to loose customers. I will buy a Galaxy if I can switch over. Steve Jobs would fire the "geniuses" that created this pathetic interface. Apparently the team that did has no usability expereince. Really ridiculous.

We all see what happened to Blackberry when they did not evolve. Apple is going backward and can be easily dethroned as their competitors gain strenght and Apple looses its moxy.

I have been in the tech industry for 20 years and this a big backslide for Apple, or should we say the new Blackberry. I plan on getting rid of all of my devices and have not really liked the ipad, or MacBook Pro much.

or maybe your charger is going out mines did the same thing I thought it was something I did but it was the charger I just purchased a new charger and now my phone charges just fine I'm sure ios 7 has nothing to do with your phone not wanting to charge or there could be a loose pin in the charging port if so take it to whomever you purchased it from or to an Apple store let them check the phone it could be the phone if it is your fault then they will not honour your warranty if you have one they will make you purchase a new one.
