iPhone 5 camera not working after ios 7 update
The front camera works initially, but the rear camera shows a blurry image which then freezes the app. Several hard resets have had no effect.

I have also recalibrated the autobrightness feature as mentioned but still, when switching from front to back camera it still freezes and blurs.
Can you please explain us, step by step how you fixed it?
Help!!!!!
Were you under warranty at the time?
I am having the same problem with the front camera. I had updated my ios a month back.. the problem happened on its own. my phone is under warranty but i bought it from a different country , so i do not know if they would swap my phone in the current country i am residing in... Is it really hardware related? Need answers ... Please help coz i tried all the above tricks except the restore one.
I have the same problem the rear camera get blurred and the freez. Have tried all softvare option mentioned in this discussion without luck :-(. It's a iPhone 5C one month old the problem occured the same day but I went abroad for work and still is at work. Looks to me thath I shall insist on having a replacement phone when back in my own contry. Thanks for all advices in this forum.
Slapping the front-top of the phone against the palm of my hand worked for me (no joke). Held the bottom of the phone and hit it against my palm right by the FaceTime camera. Solution was found here http://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/114919/iPhone+5+Rear+Camera+Won't+Focus
This is not the bug described by most of the users here. We did/do not have a stuck focus. We have a dead Camera and iOS7 will show the last (blurry, cached) image that was on the camera. After reboots and resets the picture will obviously be black, because there is no cached "last view" anymore. Additionally, the torch (flashlight) is greyed out and none of the apps can use it either.
Please do not bang your phone to death if you have our (software!) bug. Go ahead and try this suggestion only if you have the "stuck autofocus" (hardware!) bug.
From reading some of the posts, I think there are possibly two issues.
One is hardware related where the phone probably never works and mine, doesn't work some of the time. I can't comment on the hardware issue, the symptoms or the cause. However, mine works most of the time but occasionally doesn't. This is very frustrating as shutting down the app, the phone and soft resets didn't work. I had an inkling that it was software related and something to do with permission to the camera app. I simply turned off Passcode Lock - Settings -> General -> Passcode Lock. Let me know if that works for you. If so, Apple, we need a fix for this ASAP please!
Thanks
Trevor
This did help for me, but only for some days. Disabling and enabling the cam in restrictions also affects this and is way faster. I actually had to do this in the apple store while waiting for a genius at the genius bar. I wanted to show them my issue and the camera was working again. Sure enough, disable, reboot, enable got me a broken cam again, just like it can fix it sometimes. If i had not known this trick i wouldn't have received a new phone. 😀
The comments of many users on this forum describe my experience exactly: iPhone 4S in perfect working order with fully functional camera; I download iOS 7; almost immediately afterwards I find that my camera is no longer working. I contacted Apple about this and below I have provided two extracts from my chat conversation with an Apple advisor this evening:
Extract 1
Me: Can iOS 7 cause a hardware problem?
Apple advisor: No, not at all. Software cannot directly cause the hardware to fail.
Apple advisor: It may have bought an issue to surface and revealed it, but not cause it.
Me: I see. This is the issue. In a previous conversation with one of your agents, I was told that if the camera problem persisted after a full reset, then the problem was a hardware problem and not a software problem. Since my problem persisted after the reset I was forced to conclude, on the basis of what he had told me, that my problem is a hardware problem. And apparently, if it is a hardware problem, then I, and not Apple, am responsible for it
Apple advisor: So yes, after all the troubleshooting that we’ve done, we’ve determines that this is a hardware issue. But because your device warranty has expired almost a year ago, that is the reason for the fee.
Apple advisor: But the hardware failure was not caused directly by iOS 7.
Apple advisor: If your device was still in warranty, we would gladly cover the cost of the repair as it failed within the warranty period.
Me: But, as I explain in my email, I have always taken great care of my iPhone and had no problems with it whatsoever until immediately after I had downloaded iOS 7. I have since discovered that I am but one of many iPhone users who experienced camera problems after downloading iOS 7. Even if my phone was out of warranty, that does not give Apple the right to release an update that breaks my camera, and then charge me for the cost of returning my camera to its original condition. You can, I am sure, see my point.
Apple advisor: I do see your point and I do understand. This is a tough situation, but the fact also remains that there are millions of iPhone 4s’ out there that were not affected by the update which leads us to believe that any issues that seem to be caused by the update, are all preexisting issues that the process of installing the update revealed.
Apple advisor: When you speak with our customer relations group tomorrow, we’ll be able to discuss this at more length with you.
Me: In other words, a latent defect in the iPhone
Apple advisor: Even if it is a manufactures defect, the product is 347 days past the warranty expiration date.
Extract 2
Me: So are you suggesting that in my case, and all of those I cite in my email [i.e. the comments of iPhone users on this forum], the fact that the camera problems were experienced in the immediate aftermath of an iOS 7 download is merely a coincidence, albeit rather an extraordinary one?
Apple advisor: With the knowledge and understanding I have about how software and hardware work, yes. The installation of the new software , for lack of a better term, “reinitialized” the device and all of it’s components. If any of those components exhibit any sort of failure, they will either not work completely (as is the case with greyed out wi-fi on a some devices) or the affected component won’t work properly.
Me: So iOS 7 cannot have caused my camera problem?
Apple advisor: No. The camera may have already had a failure, but seemed fine until the initialization and re-installation of all the software onto the phone where the issue was then made apparent.
Extract 3
Apple advisor: Again, I understand the situation. And yes, people have posted on the internet their thoughts and feelings about the issue, but we handle every case that coms to us on an individual basis. Being that I am only a tech support advisor, I do not deal with compatibility between the iOS software and the hardware. The answer still remains that same, that because your device has an expired warranty, there will be a fee for for any issues that require a device replacement.
Me: Would it be possible to submit my phone to an Apple technician for the sole purpose of establishing that I did not subject my phone to any physical trauma that could have broken the camera?
Apple advisor: I’m not sure that would help though. The point is that the warranty is expired. It doesn’t matter if the issue that you’re experiencing was caused by abuse or if it was just a coincidental failure.
Apple advisor: Because warranty is expired there is a fee.
My iPhone5 exhibits the front camera not working symptoms as seen by many others following the update to iOS, it shows the classic freeze and smeared screen if the camera is switched from rear to front in any of the apps that support that function.
An interesting point I note is that I can unlock the freeze by ejecting? the software/data retained for background operation. By this I mean that a double click on the home button exposes those apps asleep and then ejecting the camera app miniature screen, which by the way shows as the frozen forward picture.
The next step is to restart the camera which then shows, every time a black screen with the camera switch button available. Switching then puts you back to the forward facing camera fully functional in all modes, pano etc, as it was before switching produced a freeze.
My view as an ex software QA manager is given that it is data causing a freeze because once this is rejected the camera cycles from front to rear until you ask to switch from front to rear when the freeze reappears!
Apologies
I Mixed up my last para and it should read
"Until you ask it to switch from rear to front when the freeze reappears"
I put the typo down to the year in which I was born.
Hardenm.. I got the same/exactly answer from an apple advisor in stamford,ct.but the worst part was even if you pay 270 and receive a new phone, you can not add an apple care x 99 dollars,( so to avoid a new issued) yuppp so if you do another upgrade you could lost 270 more bucks.. I was ****** and I ended up returning an ipad air that i brought 2 weeks ago.. i
