iPhone 5 camera not working after ios 7 update

The front camera works initially, but the rear camera shows a blurry image which then freezes the app. Several hard resets have had no effect.

I tried everything here and nothing worked. I figured this was surely a software problem. After nearly giving up, I tried the pinch pressure method and it worked. I closed the camera app, pinched the camera corner of the phone as hard as I could between my thumb and index finger for about 5 seconds. I then turned off the phone by holding down the power switch. I turned it back on 15 seconds later and opened the camera app. It now worked as is should. This IS a hardware problem. We'll see how long the pinch fix works. Hopefully long enough for the iPhone 6!!!

Reading people' posts about Apple replacing new phone with the reason known as 'hardware failure' somehow gives me the impression that they're not so willing to look into and solve the real problem, they replace new phone because it's faster and they can get away from customer's anger more easily!!! Well it's fine provided you're under warranty and you live in the country you purchased iPhone from!! ( I live in Asia, had my phone bought in Canada and even though I still have my warranty period I don't see myself travelling to Canada just to get my phone replaced @$!#!$)

Would be nice if Apple could make their iPhone serviced worldwide, it's poorly made and has more bugs than it should be.

Anw, in my case i'm pretty sure it's NOT HARDWARE because the camera works briefly everytime I reset all settings. Restoring as new phone makes it works perfectly for a day or so before the black screen starts coming back. Instagram says there's error launching the camera...I'm sending diagnostics to Apple and my Camera crash log recorded bug type 109. (?) So it's a BUG eventually.

Totally agree on warranty..... Bought macbookair, iphone4s, ipad2 in france and now living in kazakhstan, no way to request for warranty in another country.

Same day i upgraded iphone4s and ipad2, and the front camera stopped to work on both device. If it is software it is a lack a testing from apple programmers, if it is hardware it is a hidden defect from the camera which should be under warranty.

An action class should be appropriate.

But at least after more than 10 apple computers and 5 iphone and 3 ipad bought..... Apple lost me as a customer.

I bought apple only for quality, if this quality vanished, the customer as well.

I dont see any advantage to a product requesting updates which have for consequence to lost basic functions of devices which were working perfectly well tiil the upgrade.

As a professional IT, i dont believe that the software reason or the hardware cause is unknown from Apple, i consider that the silent attitude is a decision due to the cost of the solution..... Expecting after a certain time, obsolete devices will disappear and customers give up .

I hope that everyone will have good remembrance of what it happened on this problem, and will think twice before buying again an Apple device

Same problem here, and like Miranda401, I did all the steps this morning, except the "press the handset corner": I think this is a temporary fix, and I do not want to run out of warranty if it works a few month.

I have a iPhone 5c, two months old. I will get it back to my carrier, where I bought it with a bill pay plan, for support and maybe repair: it is Meteor.ie in Ireland.

I will let you know if I have news after that.

Finally Miranda401: I am a long time Apple customer, because of quality and power of the products. I am not an "Apple fan boy". In the past I read a lot of "Apple lost a customer" or the likes, but where will you go to, when you need to buy a new hardware? Ok for the Phone, my needs are basic, and I had Samsung Galaxy before. But I did not want the huge screen, and they increased their same prices, now very close to Apple level, so why bother. Plus I don't have the pockets to put the galxy S4 into it, and did not want to change my wardrobe ;-)

Kind regards,

Hervé

I fully understand, but now smartphone applications are so powerful that i dont use them anymore on the phone as fingers are not so precise, i use only the tablet, and a simple double sim smartphone with instant chat messaging and mail reception covers mainly all usages with a better coverage in non occidental countries and at low cost.

A big phone is not convenient as it takes too much place in pockets and dont replace the mandatory tablet.

Regarding the computer, windows is mandatory for many applications and OSX versions are often very late , and in fact, i use now firefox more often than safari as many website are not fully compatible in the https mode or vpn mode, so if i return to windows the cost wont be so high, the prejudice will be the design and case quality.

The problem is mainly the IPAD where i have more money invested than in the device itself, but as now all applications using camera are lost and useless, and i had to return to a simple camera to cover my needs.

When back to EU, i willl study what to buy, because why to pay so high a device which can be broken by the supplier.

The confidence in the supplier is key, as the datas you store thru applications cannot be replaced as no export is possible to another OS. But i will regret my ipad quality.

Since they break my two devices, I have subscribe web applications in the cloud and my needs are becoming a browser....and some free non critical applications.

Google chrome ?

I have an iPhone 5c, and the front camera sometimes works, the back never. It shows black most of the time and a blur the rest of the time. I tried the pinch method, turning off an on, and resetting. Nothing works! I have an appt. with the Genius Bar for Monday, but I want to know if there's an easy way to fix and what is happening and why. If you have an answer, thanks!

I figure I will just add my name to the growing list here for what it is worth. My daughter's front facing camera does not work. It just shows a blurred view. The rear camera was working but started to be tempermental. Now it pretty consistenly has a black screen. If you power off the phone she can sometimes get the rear facing camera back. We tried squeezing the upper corner where the camera is and doing a reset (holding the sleep/wake and home buttons together). Both cameras work once it is powered up again. This fix is temporary for her front facing camera (I am sure the rear will follow). It didn't last more than a few tries of checking the camera.

This is a brand new replacement phone that she got in December. The sleep/wake button stopped working on the first phone after about 4-5 months. These phones are great when they work properly but the manufacturing of them seems to really suck. I had to get mine replaced because the wi-fi was not working properly when I first got it. We finally parted from our Blackberries and so far 3 out of 4 phones all under 1 1/2 years have failed. How can you justify an $800 electronic product that has a life span of 6-9 months?? I really feel the replacement phone should start with a new warranty period. It is a new phone. Why would Apple not stand behind their product and offer another year warranty period on the phone??

My iphone 5 power button has not been working for a long while now so I am using the accessibility "spot" method of calling up the hardware functions to be able to switch the phone off, and I can only switch it back on by plugging it in to a charger for a second.

My camera stopped working a few weeks ago but the latest manifestation of this problem is causing me to tear my hair out with anger.

I somehow hit the camera option on a locked screen and the camera popped up. I minimised the camera but the icon is now showing slighly off colour and the phone is refusing to unlock with a side swipe. Pressing the "spot" button and selecting device and holding down the lock screen icon shows me the device power off icon but does not accept the swipe to switch it off. How the **** do I recover from this now?

It is becoming a real joke. I was looking to change to Iphone 6 but am having serious doubts with the service I have got from Apple.

I am not a happy bunny.

😠 I got the same problem!!!!

After upgrading to iOS7.1 in Mar, my front camera no longer works. When switching the back camera to front camera, only a blurry image of the back camera could be shown. Then, the app is hang.

I tried to bring my phone to the Genius Bar, while sadly, they asked me to pay over HKD 1,100 to replace the front screen together with the front camera.

It doesn't make sense! With all the response and comment here, it's obviously an OS or a software problem, instead of a hardward one

Can any apple engineers check our feedback here and prepare a fix as soon as possible?

I would appreciate if apple could arrange similar replacement exercise like the switch on/off button for all impacted apple users freely, in case this is REALLY a hardware problem which HAPPENS after iOS 7.1 UPGRADE!
