Podcast goes haywire on iTunes 11.1

After upgrading to IOS7 and iTunes 11.1, my Podcasts have all gone haywire.

ITunes have deleted all my Podcasts which I have not configures to sync with my iPhone. All episodes disappeared. In some Podcasts (but not all), all episodes other than those ticked got deleted.

I could download them again (or retrieve from Time Machine) but if I exit and restart iTunes, it will just revert back to being deleted. Then, when I sync it gets deleted from my phone too.

This new Podcast is really terrible. It got installed and reset all my Settings and I had to reset back everything. It was like I was installing a Windows app or something!!

Episodes continue to get deleted if you update after dropping the files into iTunes from your folders. I restored these files from my Time Machine into my iTunes folder. After updating the Podcast, all files that I restored from my Time Machine disappear and the episodes deleted from my Podcast list.

But if I re-download the episodes, they stay even after the Podcast was updated. I have tried it for one Podcast and hope that the others will work as well. It is a pain but at least it works.

Will keep you posted on other functions.

Try downloading iTunes 11.1.1. It has worked with the limitation I mentioned in my earlier post. I have since tried to restore an entire Podcast (all episodes unticked when the software was first updated) from Time Machine and there is no problem. So, problem only arises if there is a mix of ticked and unticked episodes in the same Podcast.

There are still problem with the Podcast app on the iPhone though:

  1. When not in internet coverage, a dialogue box comes up when you enter Podcast, telling you that you have no internet connection. Previously it only comes on the first time, Now it comes on everytime you enter Podcast without internet coverage. You have to click "OK" before you can do anything on the iPhone. Real annoyance.
  2. Double-clicking on the lock screen normally takes you to the Podcast/Music controls, from which you can click play to continue from where you left off. Now that access from the lock screen is only available for x minutes after locking. I have gotten the controls after as long as 5 minutes but I have not properly tested it. After x minutes, there is no Podcast/Music controls and you have to unlock th phone and enter Podcast/Music app to restart. Also a real pain.

I hope this will be corrected in 7.0.3.

I, like so many others, am so frustrated with the iTunes 11.1.x / Podcasts app problems.

I have five podcasts I listen to. 650 episodes in all. iTunes 11.1 and 11.1.1 deletes all the old episodes and I can't work out why it does it, or, how to prevent it.

I have downloaded the episodes maybe a dozen times only to have them disappear a few hours later.

I have used iTunes for podcasts since v4.7 and this is just rediculous. It isn't rocket science after all.

This morning I deleted all podcasts from iTunes and Podcasts app, moved the subscriptions to the the Downcast app.

This is becoming all too typical of Apple... don't they beta this stuff?

All my years-worth of podcasts have disappeared. Luckily I make backups, aside from Time Machine, however following your instructions does not work, especially when I apply the "Refresh" button, it simply wipes them all out again, and contrary to your note, they have been cleaned out from the folders on the drive they were cataloged in, which is why I had to access them from my back-ups. Now I'm siting here with an iTunes I reluctantly updated, with no podcasts...

Reminds me of the good 'ol days when Apple decided not to support their heralded iWeb app and their .me accounts and threw us (our archived websites and photos) into the street.

Hope they fix this soon.

I ended up recreating my iTunes library, which fixed it for me. Afterward I upgraded to 11.1.1.11 and it's still ok.

I should have done these two steps:

  1. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451, then
  2. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2562

However, I did the following, which was successful but took more work on my part:

I hope this works for someone else.

Are you using the sync features in iTunes between devices? Do you have iTunes in the Cloud enabled? I have none of the Store/device sync settings enabled nor use iTunes in the Cloud nor use the iPhone app and I experience no deletions of old podcasts, and I have plenty of them.

It seems there are issues when using the iPhone app with iTunes and enabling the sync podcast settings in iTunes. Correct me if I am wrong. How are you managing your podcasts?

I should consider myself lucky to not have experienced any of the podcast issues with iTunes 11.1.1 (I skipped 11.1). I read some of the other posts regarding the auto deletions of old podcasts and figured it might be related to the "sync podcast subscriptions and settings across all devices" setting in iTunes. I am not certain though as I have never set up to auto sync any iPhones, iPads or iPods with iTunes on a computer.

I have always manually managed iTunes and iPods and used 3rd party software and Applescripts to sync certain settings, as my library is huge and I wanted to avoid any accidental deletions. I have a lot of old podcasts that I have also managed manually, none of them were deleted or disappeared. Call me old school, but I don't like any automation when it comes to managing my precious music files.

Apple made significant changes to syncing podcasts without making the users aware of the consequences. When you first startup iTunes the preference to sync all devices is checked by default which then runs its course. Bad idea. There is also no detailed instructions or info available on how to set up the syncing of podcasts between multiple devices as far as I know.
