I've contacted Apple following this link http://www.apple.com/support/contact/, follow the steps. If your Care Plan has expired click on Exception -> IOS7.
It seems my iPhone 4s had a hardware issue with the WIFI chip. Apple replaced my iPhone without costs and mine had no warranty!
Hope it helps!
I am in Canada. iPhone 4S, iOS 7.0.2.
Experienced the same greyed wifi issue since update.
My phone is out of warranty by more than half a year.
Followed instruction from Apple's knowledge base, all the tricks explained here and in other threads, except the dryer/freezer ones.
Sometimes, immediatly after applying a fix, wifi/bluetooth became enabled, but never more than half an hour.
Yesterday, Oct 5, I followed user Tommeucanyellas recommandation, quoted here.
I chose the right Country, and clicked the following:
iPhone > Service request & Troubleshooting > Restore or update not working as expected.
Then I entered my serial number. Then choose iOS 7 in the next menu.
I chose to schedule a call. The phone rang at the exact scheduled time. Spoke to a first nice and polite representative who asked if I tried the workarounds explained on the Apple knowledge base, as well as backup/restore and reset network settings. Then I've been put on hold for a couple of minutes. When she came back, she transferred me to a senior representative.
The senior representative acknowledged the situation and apologied. Without me asking anything yet, he offered me to make an exception, a free replacement.
To get the new phone, he proposed to
-go to an apple store (this is a 3 hours drive for me)
-I send my phone, when they get it the send a new one.
-They charge my CC, send me a phone, then I have 10 days to send them the faulty one with the box I received my new phone in. Then they undo the CC billing.
I chose the last option of course.
The same day the new phone left the warehouse in PA and is scheduled to arrive at my place by tuesday.
At the end of the conversation I asked if he was aware of the technical issue. He couldnt tell me, but said that was a known issue and some customers were experiencing this.
I must admit I've been pleasantly surprised about the outcome of this issue.
For those not having luck at an AppleStore, I suggest you try this.
Thanks to Tommeucanyellas for bringing this solution out.

No, that did not work for me. The ONLY thing that worked for me with my iPhone 5 was that the store agreed to replace my phone at no cost. The phone comes with iOS 6 and I have not updated to iOS 7. I will not until I hear of a solution.
YOU are talking about iPhone 4S, I have this wifi problem on my iPad 4 cellular !!
My iPhone 4S works just fine (from what I've seen so far).
This wifi issue, is an iOS 7 problem ! So Apple has enough reasons to keep quiet about this !
..but I would not worry so much...of course, I am ****** that I cannot use my iPad just as much as the next guy, but I would not go that far to try to fix it myself, put my iPad in the freezer, or mess up my router configuration...I will not risk destroying a 1000$ piece of hardware for a software bug. (and yes, in Europe, a 32Gb iPad 4 + cellular is sold for 1000$ on a contract by Vodafone)
So, see it like this: Apple is a software company, and a very good one, they are making operating systems since the dawn of the computer era (and so does Microsoft). There is no way in **** they will leave this unsolved unless they want to commit commercial suicide.
(...in which case I will change my iPhones and iPad for Lumias and a Microsoft Surface)
Goodbye Apple, hello Htc. I've traded my iphone in. Apple are still saying its a hardware fault. My friend works for British Gas, their work phones are iPhones, they've all been told not to do the update because of this wifi issue. I've just been into EE and car phone warehouse and the staff in both have said they have had lots of people in with the same greyed out wifi.
I also have the same problem not only did I had to restore my iPhone (and that, aided of being time consuming, it did. It worked) but also my iPad3's speakers are not working! All started since I downloaded to the ios7.2
I seriously thinking of just selling all my devices and switching to SAMSUNG
Good bye apple
ITS NOT AN HARDWARE PROBLEM ITS A SFOTWARE PROBLEM !!!
iPhone 4S mounts the Broadcom BCM4329 its the same as the iPhone 4, but IOS7 on iPhone 4 doesnt have this issue.
We have just to wait for the new update maybe 7.0.3 or 7.1
Same here. They replaced mine for free as well. So far wifi is fine, but this is the third replacement phone they've given me. First new one worked for a day on ios7. Second one worked for a week on ios7. I would like to update to 7.0.2 but am going to be super ticked off if I have to drive there a third time. The store guy I talked to today swore up and down that there was no way it was the software update that was causing the problem. But it happened to my original phone and BOTH new phones they gave me. For now I'm sticking with 6.1.3 on this third phone. Better than dealing with that bs again.
That's a very true to the point Comment.
Apple are not going to openly admit that there New IOS 7 is cauing wifi issue's with there iphone 4/4s Modles.
Now if Apple turned round & Granted all them that have & are dealing with Software Upgrade Issues after upgrading to there new IOS 7, to be able to Down-Grade to there IOS 6.1.3 or 6.1.4 Versions. Then this would go a long way in showing Apple does care. And alos help Millions or a real lot of people to stay with Apple.
At least then we'll be bale to use wifi Until apple have found a real fix for most of the issue's.
I mean it's not hard really to open signing of IPSW for an older version..
But this would then be seen as some kind of admission by apple that not all is right with the new IOS 7.
SO APPLE.. Qeustion ?
You are aware of the wifi issue amonst other issues.
But mainly the WIFI Problem... Are You or have you got some kind of plan in action to fix the millions of iphones with no wifi after installing your New IOS 7 Upgrade ?
It be Nice for a spokeman to update the public to your plans to fix this issue..
Thank You
Lucky I got my iPhone 4S replaced in apple store.
And I'm in Australia so the warranty is 2 years by default.
If anyone have this issue and in Australia, please go to apple store to get a replacement if your phone is less than 2 years.
I spoke with a "senior advisor" after complaining to 1-800-MYAPPLE tech support yesterday, Oct 21st. The wifi on my 4S has suffered all the aformentioned problems FROM THE SECOND I INSTALLED ios7.
Here is the party line: If you have reset your 4S to factory settings, and the wifi switch is still greyed-out, then it is a hardware problem and has nothing to do with ios7. So I asked him if it was just a coincidence that my wifi failed at the exact moment I installed ios7. He said yes.
So basically, for $199 they will replace my phone as it is out of warranty. Absolute BS.
Apple will NEVER admit that the software is causing this widespread problem. But we all know it is.
Well- I gave up. My iPhone 4S 16gb is out of warranty. Greyed out WiFi (though Bluetooth works fine). Can connect if I do the 15mins in the freezer thing, but only for about 10 mins before WiFi is lost again.
I luckily still had my iPhone 4 16gb with IOS 6 still on it. I called ATT and had them activate the SIM card in my old phone. So now I have a 4S brick. Well, unless I want to use the music player or bluetooth.
Ridiculous.
Another iphone 4s owner here that upgraded to iOS 7 a little over 3 weeks ago now. Immediately after updating my wifi and bluetooth stop working.
Went to the apple store the next day and employee tells me it's the first he's heard of the problem. He goes in the back and then comes back and says he spoke with a "Cupertino Engineer" and they say that my wifi and bluetooth were already fault and the update put it over the top. Says he can't do anything and offers me the out of warranty $199. I decline and then refers to me a manager. I speak to the manager and he can't do anything either. Tells me to speak to Apple Care level 2. I speak to a rep and he says that it was the first time hearing of the problem too. Tries to do some trouble shooting to no avail. He says he is going to do research on it and get back to me. Comes back with no resolution. I told him that I am not the only one with the issue and it isn't purely coincidental that when I upgraded to iOS7 my wifi and bluetooth stop working. I even send him links to this post to which his reply is people will post and agree to pretty much anything someone posts.
Apple Care guy tells me to go check wifi connectivity at Apple store so I go out there again and the employee tells me it's the first he's heard of this issue. Does a few resets to the phone with no success. He then tells me they can't check wifi without the wifi working. Why in the world did apple care guy tell me to go to Apple Store then? Waste of my time. I then try calling Apple Care again to speak to a different rep and tell my problem. She tells me it's the first she's heard of this issue. She tells me they can't do anything. You can only get a out of warranty replacement for $199. No thank you.
I wrote an even longer post on the discussion boards a couple nights ago and apple removes my posts.
Shame on you Apple for not acknowledging the problem!! Shame on you Apple for telling your employees to say they have never heard of this problem. That is blatantly lying to people for your own benefit.
I understand the dilemma that you are in Apple. If you admit to the issue then you would have to repair all the phones that were damage due to updating to iOS 7. I just think its really unfortunate that Apple can't acknowledge the problem and do something about it.
Hello,
I think this Wi-Fi connection problem is coming from the channel numbers that is related with your router.
You have to check your router's wi-fi channel number and your wi-fi shouldn't coincide with other wi-fi networks. If it does then IPhone wi-fi connection might interrupt randomly.
I recently upgraded my iPhopne 4s to ios 7. I am unable to use the phones wi-fi features - the option to turn on wi-fi is greyed out in my settings screen.
I tried the "Reset Network Settings" suggestion but it did not solve my issue.
I then walked into an Apple store and explained my problem. The lady told me that the phone was out of warrantly, and that they problem cannot be fixed and that I would need to purchase a replacement phone. A replacement phone costs $199. Similarly - a brand new iPhone costs $199. Cute.
She told me "She's just taking orders." and that "their hands are tied down here." Another Genius suggested that I try calling Apple customer relations and also Apple Care.
So I did. The representative repeated told me how sorry he was to hear that my device is not working and how he understands how frustrating this might be. Wow - such empathy! He suggested that I perform a device restore from iTunes. I asked him if I could just downgrade to iOS6 and to my suprise - YOU CANNOT LEGALLY DOWNGRADE THE SOFTWARE ON YOUR DEVICE.
So I did the iTunes restore - which did not work. Upon which I called Apple support again - and this representative told me that since the iTunes restore didn't work - this is a hardware issue - and since my iPhone is out of warranty I'll need to pay $199 if I want a replacement. I explained how unaccepatable this was and he offered to connect me to his supervisor.
The representative's supervisor was very happy to explain how sorry he was that I was experiencing this issue with my device and how he understands my frustrations. Such empathy! The supervisor explained to me that iOS 7 caused the wi-fi device in my iPhone 4s to overheat and it is now burnt out. Therefore, since my phone is out of warranty, it will cost $199 to replace my iPhone. I asked him, if Apple knows that the iOS 7 upgrade has the potential to physically destroy a part on my iPhone 4s that will render a part of its core functionality inoperable, and Apple has somehow made it so that I cannot leagally downgrade to iOS 6, why would they continue to encourage users to upgrade the operating system on their phone? Why not issue a simple and clear notice to iPhone 4S users before upgrading? He did not speak directly to any of my questions, told me how sorry he was, and assured me that he could not do anything to help me.
Awesome. That is taking planned obsolencense to another level. Unfortunately in the United States this kind of crap is legal at the moment.
I have been a loyal Apple customer for several years and this is not what I expected from your esteemed brand. I would suspect that there are a number of other folks that participated in this forum thread who think the same.
Apple (yes, all of you) - I am very disappointed in you. I purchase your products because I percieve them as being of the utmost quality. This is not quality.
I agree that those devices have the potential to work for a long time - the 3GS was a great phone - as long as you do not perform any major iOS upgrades on it.
I don't think this is any sort of 'false coincidence'. If a software upgrade has the potential to physically damage your device - why would the manufacturer not warn you about that before upgrading? Why even allow users who have older iPhone to upgrade to the newer operating systems that they are supposedly not compatible with?
If the upgrade is going to cause poor performance on the device - and also has the potential to damage your phone - don't let those users upgrade. Or at the very least - warn them of the possible effects in plain text prior to upgrading. It's not like Apple doesn't have the technology to do that - they specifically choose not to and allow you to break your phone.
Out of shear desperation I walked into the Apple Store in Cape Town (South Africa) yesterday to see if they have any news from Apple to solve this iPhone 4s – wifi issue. Well before I even said “Good Morning” to the tech support, he saw my iPhone 4s and uttered the follow:
“wifi issue, right? Sorry there is no solution, you are about the 100th customer I’ve seen with this issue in the last couple of weeks. Sorry. Try to restore to factory settings on iTunes.”
My response to him was, I’ve tried that and it doesn’t work.
Sigh!!!
