I have a 4S that was working fine after the update until yesterday, when I had the same probem as well. Luckily I had a month of warranty left on my phone so I was able to go to the apple store and get a new 4s for no charge. The guy at the genius bar was also telling me the same thing that its a hardware problem and not a SW issue...

I've been impressed in the past with Apple customer service, but find the experiences of customers on this forum absolutly disgraceful.

I'm going into the shop in the Metro Centre next week to have them look at the greyed out WIFI buttons on my 4S and tell me......

Its a hardware problem, nothing to do with their software upgrade, we're not aware of any one else with this problem, a coincidence it's happened to others, and other associated corporate propoganda (lies in common mans language).

If thats the case then it will be the end of my Apple experience.....................

Hello Mr Samsung................

Been watching this thread for a few weeks. My phone was infected right after I did the upgrade and I've been living without wifi and Bluetooth for 3 weeks or so. Been hard but not impossible.

I thought for sure I'd move away from Apple phone based on this experience and the fact that my son and wife now have Samsung galaxy devices they love. I've since changed my mind and pulled the trigger on a new iphone 5s after seeing a few co-workers devices and opting to give Apple another chance. I paid full retail which hurt but at least I have an upgrade in my pocket and a warrantee if the 5s turns out to have similar issues, etc... In the end it was the speed, size and familiarity that won me over in spite of this dark period of upgrade ****.

One thing I have learned in the process is don't do a major upgrade of the OS if your device is out of warrantee.

Perhaps it's the fact that I do technology for a living makes me more tolerant of f-ups...

Good luck to everyone here. With my luck a7.04 release will drop tomorrow that fixes the issue!

Well- I gave up. My iPhone 4S 16gb is out of warranty. Greyed out WiFi (though Bluetooth works fine). Can connect if I do the 15mins in the freezer thing, but only for about 10 mins before WiFi is lost again.

I luckily still had my iPhone 4 16gb with IOS 6 still on it. I called ATT and had them activate the SIM card in my old phone. So now I have a 4S brick. Well, unless I want to use the music player or bluetooth.

Ridiculous.

I have used the freezer method twice now. First time it worked OK for several days. Because the freezer method works, I feel quite confident that it is indeed a hardware problem with the WiFi chip used in the 4S. I also would not be surprised to find out that all the 4s's with this [problem were assembled during the same production run with the same chip from the same vendor's production run. Here is why I think that.

Remember, I phones generate a lot of heat. Most of us don't feel it due to the various cases we use. As metal heats, it expands. A key filament in the WiFi chip expands with the heat and ruptures causing the WiFi chip to no longer function. Placing it in the freezer causes the metal filament to contract thereby restoring the contact necessary for the chip to work properly until heats causes the filament to loose contact again. I don't know how many times this refreezing process will work until it no longer is effective.

What I learned is that Apple iPhones should come with al least a 2 year warranty. It is possible that Apple knew about this problem and chose to ignore it. It is also possible that this was a deliberate planned obsolence project to ensure more sales of the newer products...but I think that is highly unlikely. They definitely should institute a Six Sigma process in the plant that manufactured this line.

I do think the iOS7 introduction and this hardware problem are not a cause and effect situation, but merely a coincidence.

Apple removed my post "because it contained non-constructive rants or complaints"... Well, on the constructive side, I tried everything (many times), and nothing worked. I also believe it's Apple's job to "construct", while mine is to "consume". If Apple fails to "construct", and as a result I cannot consume (and am told to pay more to turn a bad Apple product into a good Apple product), I do believe I have the right to "rant and complain", and if you don't let me, well, "that's no way to run a railroad"...

On the constructive side for the many of us that are being forced away from using Apple, because of its uncaring, poor quality service, I have been checking out how to use Android products with the iTunes database I have built up over so many years. It can be done - at least I have managed to synchronize to my wife's Samsung tablet - and all the genre, album, artist, artwork etc is showing at least with the right combination of software.

On the Apple front I see that 7.03 is now out there and I will see whether this does any better than the the iPhone-in-the-freezer solution that gives relief, but only temporary relief from the problem. Am I right to hold out hope as T-Mobile in Hungary advised that Apple will sort this mess out?

Will see and will report my findings here ...

... half an hour later I have to report that 15 minutes in the freezer does more good than the update to 7.03 ...

Seems that those suffering from the greyed out wifi are not important customers to Apple - no solution, no communication from their side at least. Trying to be as constructive as I can, but even I can't solve Apple's hardware and software problems ... 😟

Im one of the victim wifi grey out... 😟

iPhone 4 user here, once updated iOS7, wifi grey out... after used few days, wifi suddenly come back for 2 weeks... At first was thought Apple silently fix the issue over the air.. im so naive...

Wifi grey out again after weeks again.. im very down 😢😢

So far i not using any freezer, hair dryer method.. wifi on & off itself, it should pretty sure is hardware problem... are guys think that too? 😐

7.0.3 change log has no mentioned any fix wifi issue... so sad...

Apple do not care us anymore..

Well - I have just wasted 3 hours trying to undo the grayed out Wifi on problem as per above. I tried the update/backup/restore three times before calling (the "official") Apple Support line. I knew I was in trouble because of the difficulty the answerer had with English communication (he knew English fine but we had trouble with understanding each others pronunciations). We went down the script he had and finally he said that he thought I had a problem - genius! - and that I needed new software that only he could provide (i.e. not me) and that he needed to have control over my Mac (warning, warning, danger.....) to check my 4S. I really didn't want to do this but did 😟. He then told me that I had a "software glitch" on my phone from some nebulous software app (e.g. iOS 7.03 perhaps??). He said he could fix it with new software he could load - I could not do it myself - AND - he would have to charge me $69.95 for the privelege - for 6 months support. I would not agree to this - which was good because I now see that it is a hardware issue and software wouldn't have fixed it. So unless Apple can find an iOS fix before I take a hammer to my phone (not eligible for an upgrade with AT&T of course), I will go to a Samsung Galaxy later this week - may be today even. This is absolutely ridiculous that Apple would give us all this song and dance about this issue. They have lost me as a customer. When my MacBook Pro dies (next OS change??) I will go back to the PC dark side. There are consequences to stupidity - obvioulsy mine for buyng the 4S and then upgrading to iOS 7. Sorry for the rant. Just wanted to add one more incident to this thread in the hope that may be Apple might care about its (once) loyal customers.

I lost wifi connection on my 4S, it is 2years old and had been fine with IOS7 for some time. We took it to Apple and they checked the aerial which was fine and diagnosed a hardware problem. Luckily I was insured so got a brand new replacement with IOS6 on which worked perfectly, foolishly I upgraded to IOS7 and instantly lost the ability to select wifi. This really needs sorting or the ability to revert to IOS6.

wifi doesn't work with IOS 7
