Iphone 4s ios 7 battery issues

I posted this question in the basics forum, but it probably belongs here: Since installing iOS 7 on my iPhone 4s, the battery life seems to be significantly reduced, at least judging by how quickly my battery life percentage meter keeps dropping. I've gone through and turned off all sorts of settings, like location services on most everything, etc. Is anyone else experiencing a similar issue? Anyone know of any fixes?

@taltigs thanks for sharing that i agree with Roy that it would be good to mention the two apps which caused the constant battery drain in the case of your wife's iPhone 4S so it could help others that maybe are using the same apps and have the exact same battery drain problem.

My wife and i had similar problems as mentioned earlier in this topic (page 29) and in our case the 'Scoupy' app kept running in the background as mentioned on the 19th of March. This problem occured since iOS7.0.6 and remained a problem with iOS7.1 untill we found out that the solution was to remove that app and our battery usage was back to normal again.

I wish Apple would come up with a better way (instead of searching through diagnostics logs) to determine which app(s) are causing the battery drain (constant running in background) so more users could easier find out which app(s) has/have a huge bug. So you know that you could remove that app(s) from your iPhone completely and see if that resolves the problem. In our cases it did resolved the battery drain.

so i have an iphone 4s purchased in jan 2012. its now over 2 years old and decided to upgrade to ios 7.1.

i'vebeen having errors with my iphone 4s. ever since i got back from a trip overseas i noticed every text message i sent via imessage comes up as "not delivered" but will get a response from that person. in the end, i didn't know if the other party received my messages at all. tried to do some fix but didnt work.

i decided to upgrade to ios 7.1 even though i've read about the battery life issues because i thought if i didnt upgrade i still have problems with imessage so nothing to lose really. also, i was still using ios 5.1 i totally skipped ios 6.

so here's what i did

1. i followed suggestions Shahd Elfatih(Thanks!) on how to clean install io1 7. but like everyone else, i immediately notice the significant battery drain right after the upgrade. i havent even finished typing a text message and the batter was dropping 1% at a time.

2. i performed several hard re-sets and drained out the battery life then fully charged it. several times. didn't work.

3. i followed th various tips on the internet to conserve iphone battery life. there's one site that offers 37 tips i think. helped a bit but still battery didnt last a day.

4. last and most important step. i bought a replacement oem iphone 4s battery with kit from a reputable ebay seller at $9.99 including postage.

after replacing the battery i fully charged and immediately used it. it's now past the 23 hour mark since the first full charg and im still at 23%. this includes a total of over 4 hours of usage. i also used the iphone timer for over an hour in the gym yesterday without closing the screen. i think this was the ultimate test as previous from the batt replacement i could see the battery life drop 1% at a time as the minute passes.

i plan to drain the battery then fully charge it and see how far this one lasts.

i also noticed one significant change after the batt replacement, the phone is not over heating anymore. in the previous battery after a few minutes the iphone would be very hot. i could still hold it but i could feel how hot it was even if the phone is covered with a leather case.

I agree with another poster here who also changed his battery. after over 2 years of use, the battery has definitely reached its end.

hope this review helps.

In my case it was an app process that was running constantly in the background with my and my wife's iPhone 4S since iOS7.06 and still with iOS7.1. In the end we removed the app and we now have again a normal battery use again of at least 24 hours or even 1,5 day with WIFI on almost 90% of the day. At the time we had the app Scoupy still installed we only had a battery time of 14 hours with almost the similar use. Other people also mentioned apps like

Viber and Pango+ and Isracard causing the problem. Just removing the app (and not using the app anymore) resolved the battery drain.

Both our iPhones are bought second hand and were 2 years old and contain both (still) an original battery. So it doesn't always have to be the battery which is the problem.

Ofcourse in someone else his/her case it can be that it's another app which is causing the drain.

In that case you need to dive into the Settings > General > Info > Diagnostics and Use >

Diagnostics and Use >logs per app to determine which app isn't closed although you turned off your phone (or even in my case reset to factory settings without backup). It's unfortunately pretty hard to find the app that is causing this.

I did not look for apps which show this but none of them indicated Scoupy as the problem so I was lucky another user already searched through the diagnostics logs and installed/removed every app to determined which was the app that caused the battery drain.

I would also advise people who are still facing battery drain problems to look especially at the main battery using things (aside from Push notifications from apps) which are:

# Settings > Refresh apps on background. I would suggest to completely turn that off

# Settings > Privacy > Location tracking > Only Maps, Google Maps are allowed to use location tracking in my case, you could also turn that off completely or be very selective which apps can use your GPS.

# Settings > E-mail, calendar .. >deselect 'Push' and set it to either Fetch e.g. once an hour for all separate e-mail accounts you have. In your case you could set it to Manual so you won't use any data as long as you won't open your E-mail app and manually download e-mails.

I have an iphone 4s with factory 6.1.3 still installed. Worked great for 13 months, then started having battery problems. Drained overnight and rendered alarm useless. Started draining at 10% per hour rate, and would sometimes get very warm to touch. Tried all of the fixes found online, short of factory reset to new. Airplane mode helped, but did not completely stop the drain. Finally broke down and replaced battery. Still had the excessive drain at first. BTW, I noticed" time since last charge"....usage and standby times were almost equal.....even though phone was in standby!

Funny thing then happened. I went to another part of town, and drain stopped! Then went to restaurant with no wifi, and noticed large drain when accessing email or facebook. Closing those apps helped again. Seems to be working normally now. However, if no wifi available, searching for a 3G (Sprint) signal will increase drain substantially. Anyone else notice similar characteristics? I'm still not sure whether the battery replacement did the trick, or some other glitch rectified itself, but it seems to be working fine now.

For the past month, my iPhone 4S has had brutal battery capacity. I've tried everything I've seen in this forum (other than battery replacement) and nothing has helped. Just the other day, my phone was on 17%. I opened the app control and closed out the 2 apps that I had just been using (I close every app that I use immediately after I'm done). I watched in horror as the battery literally drained from 17-1% in less than 5 seconds, right before my eyes. This is not the first time something like that has happened, and it happened with no active apps on low brightness! I have no clue why or how, but I would like to solve the problem without forking over 500+ dollars for a new iPhone. I have had the phone since Christmas of 2012. Any ideas?

Same problem, battery was draining at an alarming rate. The app causing our problem was a police scanner app. After taking advice from a post in this forum went into settings>General>About>diagnostics & usage>diagnostics & usage data & found the culprit app here being constantly active even though not turned on. You HAVE to DELETE the app not just disable it. Have now turned back on all the other basic settings and all is good.

I'm an apple insider and I believe if you switch to a samsung your battery life on the

Phone will be significantly shorter and plus apple

sued samsung for copyright infringement and also patent infringement so apple is going to

Put sales bans on the samsung phones and I hope they do as

A matter of fact and I believe apple is well deserving of 914.5 billion dollars of samsung's money.

So really I don't advise anyone who is having this issue to switch to a samsung I'd advise you to get the iPhone 5s or the 6 when it comes out and ditch those bad defective model phones. Plus the iPhone 5s has better battery life than samsung phones because it seems to stay charged for the whole day.I have one myself and I enjoy having a better battery life than my 4s did. But if you like big screens wait until the iPhone 6 comes out it will have a big screen and when I say big I mean samsung galaxy s5 big! Plus the iPhone 5s and the 6 has a fingerprint sensor so beat that samsung! also the samsung phones really can't do as much as the iPhones can and the apps are terrible for android. So let me know what you think my email is millercivitts1@gmail.com

I have had the same issue since upgrading to IOS 7, I have been searching around for quite some time, and it seems that every device that has received the latest IOS7 seems to be having battery life issues, recently I was working in an area where there was low signal, and my battery was losing chunks of charge at high rates, its was also 30degrees Celsius out too, which caused a lot of over heating, which also was not good for battery life, so, I can only conclude, as someone pointed out in this thread previous, that it seems that something has been rushed out of dev., with some kind of continual polling leak, whether it be, 3G polling, location services, any other signal communication, that seems to constantly keep trying to contact services, however, this week I have had my 4S sat at home with no sim on and only on my wifi, as I wanted to try an experiment, and still my batter drains but slower than when the sim is in and phone signal is active, so today, I will install a brand new replacement, and see how that goes once its got a decent charge.

My point of actually writing in this thread, is to ask why, no one from Apple has made any acknowledgement that most of their existing user base is totally unhappy since the IOS7 update and I think in the long term will open the market to other manufacturers, for people to try, and get something that has more stability.......

I'm a bit of a Johnny-come-lately to this discussion and only sought out a discussion on this topic AFTER I upgraded my iPhone 4s to iOS7.1.2. I have noticed the same battery drain issues and battery charge issues. It takes a noticeably longer period of time to charge the battery and a noticeably shorter period of time to drain the battery on my iPhone 4s. I really can't say that I clocked the time before the upgrade but I would estimate it takes about 30% longer to charge and drains about 50% faster.

After reading several blog suggestions for the past few hours, I implemented the following on my iPhone to reduce the drain:

1. Disable the Parallax Effect: Settings > General > Accessibility > Reduce Motion > Turn this ON

2. Disable common features: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth - Wi-Fi yes (but Bluetooth is needed for sync with the car, remember to turn on Wi-Fi when needed)

3. Disable Background App Refresh: Settings > General > Background App Refresh

4. Disable Location Services: Settings > Privacy > Location Services (may be needed for the map function and check-ins in the future)

5. Disable Automatic Downloads: Settings > iTunes & App Store > Automatic Downloads

Of these above 1, 3, and 5 are new to me on this iOS so I would be curious to know how much battery is involved in these functions.

I guess I will now watch to see what happens. Wish me luck.
