Iphone 4s ios 7 battery issues

I posted this question in the basics forum, but it probably belongs here: Since installing iOS 7 on my iPhone 4s, the battery life seems to be significantly reduced, at least judging by how quickly my battery life percentage meter keeps dropping. I've gone through and turned off all sorts of settings, like location services on most everything, etc. Is anyone else experiencing a similar issue? Anyone know of any fixes?

Further update:

My iPhone 4s seems to have finally fixed itself. I have parallax on, WiFi on, all background updating off. I'm making it more than all the way through the day now.

I think the fix is to do a hard reset (top and home buttons) then recalibrate the battery by charging to 100% and discharging all the way to shutdown, at least three times. You may not need to hard reset if your phone is already showing signs of fixing itself.

The reason for all the shutdowns is that my phone behaved weirdly when the charge level got low, shutting down variably at 10%, 25%, etc. I seemed to have had to work through these several times.

Hope this helps.

Well I'm glad I never rushed and upgraded to IOS7... My girlfriend did, and as with a lot of iphone 4/4s owners completely drains the battery at an alarming rate rendering the phone almost unusable.... Kept IOS6 on my iphone4 and i still have full use of all it features and can last a nearly a day with out recharge... IOS7 is fantastic on my Ipad mini no complaints on that front.. Until Apple bring out a patch/fix that addresses the battery drain issue on iphone4/4s I wont be upgrading (Although I am due an upgrade next month anyway..)

One more thing, the amount of money we pay for an Apple product we should be able to use our devices with all the functions switched on if we chose too, that's what I thought a Quality product is.. We shouldn't be having these issues were we have to carry chargers around with us that's not quality that's sub par.... Apple fix up!!

Apart from the incredible heat this thing (4GS) is generating when it is doing nothing, I had 70% battery when i went to bed at 1:30am. No applications were running and had my alarm set for 5:30am. I had been concerned by the MASSIVE leakage of both memory (my phone is freezing with no apps running) and battery (it lasts about less than 5 hours with nothing running apart from 3g and wifi). So i turned airplane mode on.

So no comms and no apps. Battery went flat sometime between 1:30 and 5:30. Was late for work.

SORT IT OUT Apple.

Same problem here! I'm owning an iPhone 4S and an iPhone 5. The iOS 7 battery life makes the 4s almost unusable - it drops about 10% per hour without any usage at all. The iPhone 5 has no problems. On the 4s I already tried:

- Letting battery drop to 0% until the phone switches off automatically several times => fixed the issue for about 2 days

- Restored and installed the 4s as a new device => Fixed the issue for about 4 days

In both cases I didn't manage to solve that issue for more than a few days.

And no, switching off BT, WIFI, location services and so on is definitely not an option - it's a smart phone and I never had to care about those features as I never had problems in former iOS versions.

I am quite sure that those issues are linked to wrong interpetation of the "real" battery status. I.e. the iPhone "thinks" the battery was empty while in reality it isn't.

This is a long thread and it's hard to read all the posts so I'll repeat mine. My phone is now much better. I regularly finish a 16 hour day with 30% left in the battery at the end. Wifi and Bluetooth are on. The Apple store refuted my battery and found it had expired. They replaced the battery. It was free for me because I own AppleCare for the phone but if you don't the repair is $69 or $79 (I forget which).

They also checked if there was a rogue process running that was draining my battery. Go to settings>general>usage>battery usage. The two types of usage should be far apart. Standby should be much bigger. If not, something is preventing your phone from effectively "sleeping." They recommend a CLEAN INSTALL AS NEW if the is the case. Do not restore from backup because it may reintroduce the issue. They understand that this is the nuclear option so don't recommend you try that until you have tried other things first.

If this is helpful or solves your problem, please mark it so others can see it easier.

You do the steps listed here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414 (including before you restore) EXCEPT for step 5. Before you restore ANY of your apps etc, see if your battery life improves. If it doesn't, you have a hardware issue and you can use the backup you did before the restore when you get a new device or get your device repaired. If your battery life improves, you then have to manually add back in your apps and services. This is a crazy long process. I recommend finding out if your battery has expired first. The Apple Store has a quick test for that and they can replace the battery. It is free with Applecare and $69 or $79 otherwise. They will also walk you through the clean install (or "clean restore") if needed.

Believe me, this doesn't solve the issue for most of us. I already tried it, and then battery life time had been almost normal for about 4 days. On day 5 I had an empty battery after 6 hours again (without using the phone at all within this period).

Without doubts this is a iOS 7 software bug and is not related to hardware issues. So let's hope Apple is going to fix this soon.

miflo-

I never said this is the only solution. Read above for all of my advice. Some worked for me and other parts worked for other users. In fact, I suggest that you get your battery physically checked at the Apple Store first. Then check for buggy processes. FINALLY, run the clean install and DO NOT RESTORE FROM BACKUP.

I do have doubts about your statement. My battery failed a check at the Apple Store and turned up as expired. They swapped the battery for a new one. Since then, my battery life is very good. For example, wifi and BT are ON and have been all day since 7 AM. My phone has also been unplugged since 7 AM. It is now 11:15 PM where I live and my battery is at 24%. For some it IS a hardware issue. That repair is free (with Applecare) or about $79 without.

For others, it is software. The battery usage indicator under usage in general settings can tell you a lot. One of the other members of this discussion followed that advice and was able to figure out what "leaky process" he had running and turned it off until it gets updated. You shouldn't have to turn things off but sometimes there are buggy or corrupted files that cause ill behavior. Please read above and not only on this final page to see some real advice.

Not only is this clearly a software bug, it's clearly an iOS 7 software bug. I restored to factory and then DFU restored to factory. I didn't even put my e-mail accounts on the phone. It still exhibited the same battery drain and high temperatures. I also know it wasn't my battery because I don't think simply downloading iOS 7 over the course of an hour can magically cut the battery life in half. Before iOS 7, 7-8 hours usage and basically as much standby as I would get to before using 7-8 hours usage. Now it's 4 hours usage I'm lucky, sometimes as little as 3.

Had the same issues with two iPhone 5's whenever 3G was enabled. They told me there was no problem. I eventually gave up and downgraded to 4S which worked fine until iOS 7.

Even if factory restore fixed it (it doesn't) that is not fixing it. The reason we're all buying $500 to $1000 phones is because of the seamless upgrade experience and the ability to keep all our data, all our email accounts etc. just the way we like with all these "cool features".

Linda, there are three reasons making me sure that it is not a hardware issue:

1. The battery life time was abolutely normal until I upgraded to iOS7

2. I did a clean install without restoring from a backup.

3. My wife's iPhone 4s has exactly the same battery issue. Also since the iOS7 upgrade

It's hard to believe that both 4s should have a hardware issue that came up exactly when we upgraded to iOS7...
