and here are the steps to fix ur issue.

- reset network settings

- back up and restore. test issue before restoring back up.

LOL, last comment was made tongue in cheek.

Actually no I was serious, there is a special evil department at Apple that writes faulty software on purpose.

On a serious note, my wifi failed a day or so after upgrading to 7.1, prior to this no problem at all with 7.0.

I tried every solution mentioned.

I've already posted a relevant reply to the problem.

Use this article: support.apple.com/kb/ts1559

Follow all of the troubleshooting steps. You can even try restoring the device as new: support.apple.com/kb/ht4137

If the wi-fi remains greyed out, your device needs service.

If within warranty, it should be free.

If not, it will probably cost $199 USD + tax.

Don't like having to pay the out of warranty fee? Request an exception from Apple, and use this script, that I've provided previously as well:

From: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4638071?answerId=24551640022#24551640022

i.e.: "If the wi-fi chip was defective from the very beginning, and only the process of an iOS update would create enough stress to reveal this defect, then there was no way for me to report this defect during the normal warranty period. No other operations on the iPhone created enough stress to reveal this defect, which was present all along. Therefore, because the device was defective from day of purchase, but there was no way for me to test for that defect, it was impossible for me to report it prior to it being revealed. The fact that it only revealed after the warranty expired should not infringe upon the validity of my claim."

Fair points there TJ thanks.

Although spending 200 bucks or trying prove a prior fault with Apple aren't acceptable options for me and possibly others, so pointing out the fast unorthodox method worked for me is also a fair enough point.

C'mon overZealous, pointless Apple hate mail?

I simply stated one of the suggested fixes worked for me and I made a sarcastic quip; and why not, I wasted several hours trying to fix it while in transit OS where wifi is the most useful feature on the phone.

True I had not followed all the steps u mentioned; I didn't get my phone replaced like you suggested; I have no doubt this would have fixed the issue.

My iPhone is out of warranty so choosing a 5 min hair dryer trick was a valid suggestion (and one that can be done in a hotel room) as opposed to spending time and 200 bucks on repair or getting a new phone.

Some people on this forum might appreciate knowing this, instead of stating their only remaining option was to buy new phones or get them replaced.

And yes I agree this is not a fix I want to apply long term as most likely could damage the phone.

Peace, I promise not to contribute again.

Hello friends, I am having problems there are exactly two days with WI-FI connection from my iPhone, have restored the system, I've done a network reset, and the problem still persists. That started to happen after I upgraded my IOS 7.1. does anyone have a solution for this? Last week in several newspapers an article talking about what happened here in Brazil, only that people are ... how can I say? ... Here in Brazil we say "getting DICK" at Apple, rather than chase a solution. Well friends, that's it, if anyone can help me ... Thank you.

Have always been able to fix my iPhone 4S using the heat a freeze fix.....sure it's not a permanent fix ...but so what if I have to get the hairdryer out every now and then to get the phone up and running agin ....it's no biggie .....and costs me maybe 20 cents on the power bill

phone works and eventually stops working properly again.....spend about 30 minutes with a hairdryer and a freezer...phone works perfectly again.....it's all good with me and my phone :-)

Agreed. Anything other than Apple approved procedures run the risk of voiding ALL support from Apple for that device, permanently. The minute anyone starts using heater/freezer methods, they need to be aware that such actions will likely void their warranty. In other words, if it doesn't work, then you're all on your own, permanently.

You're showing your ignornace. An iPhone that has an expired hardware coverage warranty, or has physical damage not covered under the warranty, still (potentially) qualifies for Out-Of-Warranty Service. However, this requires that there have been no unauthorized modifications or service done to the hardware or the operating system. If such procedures have been taken, then Apple will not provide ANY service, for ANY price.

I can take in my iPhone 4 that I've owned for over three years (meaning it is a full year outside my two-year hardware coverage with AppleCare), and even if it has a busted screen and water damage, I could pay $149 to get it replaced. However, if there have been any unauthorized service to the device (and that includes these home-brewed heating/freezng methods), then that Out-Of-Warranty option is voided.

Do a little research before posting. Here, let me help.

My iPhone is not eligible for warranty service. What are my service options?

Apple offers two service options for iPhones that are not eligible for warranty service.

  1. Battery Replacement Service

If your iPhone requires service due to the battery’s diminished ability to hold an electrical charge and it is not covered under Apple's warranty, an AppleCare product, or statutory consumer rights, Apple will service your iPhone for a service fee. For more details, please refer to theBattery Replacement Service information. You can also contact your carrier (except AT&T and Virgin Mobile) for more information.
  2. Out-of-Warranty Service

If you own an iPhone that is ineligible for warranty service but is eligible for Out-of-Warranty (OOW) Service, Apple will service your iPhone for the Out-of-Warranty Service fee listed below.
    iPhone model Out-of-Warranty Service
    iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c,
    iPhone 5
    $269
    iPhone 4s $199
    iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS,
    iPhone 3G, Original iPhone
    $149
A $6.95 shipping fee will be added if service is arranged through Apple and requires shipping. All fees are in U.S. dollars and are subject to local tax. When setting up out-of-warranty service, Apple will request credit card pre-authorization for the maximum service fee listed above. This amount will be deducted from your credit limit. The final service fee we charge will be determined during testing and may be less than the service fee listed above.Certain damage is ineligible for out-of-warranty service, including catastrophic damage, such as the device separating into multiple pieces, and inoperability caused by unauthorized modifications. However, an iPhone that has failed due to contact with liquid may be eligible for out-of-warranty service.Apple reserves the right to determine whether or not your iPhone is eligible for Out-of-Warranty service. iPhones that are repaired or replaced have a 90-day limited hardware warranty or assume the remainder of your standard warranty or AppleCare product coverage, whichever is longer. No idea what AH is. Check the same website I posted, but change to your country/region to see the options.

If you mean 'Austria':

Plus, check to see if there are additional EU laws that give you more protection. IIRC, it's up to 5-6 years, and the retailer that sold you the iPhone is responsible in that case.

Oh, and for UK?

Out-of-Warranty Service

If you own an iPhone that is ineligible for warranty service but is eligible for Out-of-Warranty (OOW) Service, Apple will service your iPhone for the Out-of-Warranty Service Fee listed below.

Please note Out-of-Warranty Repair Service fees from your carrier may be different than those listed below.

iPhone Model Out-of-Warranty Service
iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c,
iPhone 5
£ 216.44
iPhone 4s £ 166.44
iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS,
iPhone 3G
£ 126.44

The Out-of-Warranty Service Fee includes a £ 7.44 shipping fee, which applies only if service is arranged through Apple and requires shipping. All fees are in British pound sterling and include VAT. iPhone Out-of-Warranty Service may also be available from your wireless carrier. Pricing may vary.

Here's the funny thing. First, you argue with me that you can't get service from Apple if the warranty has expired. But after I prove you wrong, then you shift gears to 'Well, it's too expensive'.

Make up your mind. Is out-of-warranty service available or not? Let's fix your FIRST error before you continue trying to argue your point... because we need to know what your point is.

Is it that you have to choose between paying £166.44 or using a heater/freezer trick? Fine. Let's at least get to an actual point, instead of ignorant ramblings on your part.

I have a 4s. My wifi greyed out when I did the last upgrade (iOS 7.1, sometime around the beginning of April). I tried everything, but nothing worked, so I took it to the Apple store. I was told that the greyed wifi has been known to happen with the 4s and the only thing that I could do was to replace it (for about 150GBP). Since I am nearing the end of my contract with my phone provider, he suggested that I hold out until I can get an upgrade. After reading all the posts, it seems like the problem is with the upgrade rather than the wifi chip failing due to wear and tear.

Since he mentioned that it was a problem with the wifi chip and I kept reading the chip is overheating, I thought I'd try to put it in the freezer as mentioned by several people. I was so scared to break my phone even more, but thought that if it really is an issue with it heating up, then let's see if it works. I couldn't believe it, but it really did work! I feared that malicious people were posting lies, but nope! In good faith, they were trying it and it worked. I've read that this is a temporary fix only, though, so I'll see how long this will last.

I, too, have found that my battery has about half the life span now. I seem to be constantly recharging my phone.

On another note, I really don't see why we are expected to pay more money to fix a problem that Apple has caused. When I'm prompted to upgrade, because it is meant to fix bugs, then I upgrade. Had I had any idea that it would screw up my phone, I would have not upgraded, because up until now, my phone was working without any issues whatsoever. As so many people have had this problem, clearly it is not a coincidence that this is happening after an upgrade? My intention was to hold onto this phone for another year or maybe even two, but if Apple doesn't resolve this, then I will need to get a new phone. Not sure I want to stick with Apple now?
