I just got my phone last year and I am having this problem, I love apple products but this is a big inconvenience to everyone who is having the same problem, help. Thanks.

Just bought a second hand iphone 4, and this has the greyed out wifi. After reading all the posts in this discussion I believe this problem to be a hardware issue. The heating and cooling to get the wifi to work, is a classic trait of the tantalum capacitors used to stabilise the rails in the various circuits. So many years as a Broadcast engineer 50% of all problems was related to these especially due to their make up and physical size. Dry joint would be cured by heating, and breaking down at temp would require cooling. The main problem was to get the size small they would use lower rated, ie 6.3volt on a five volt+ rail ( hence breaking down ). Total insufficient, needed to be at least double but this would greatly increase the size.

Not related or maybe, just repaired three Kindles with various probs, half screen, rebooting, and frozen screen.

A couple required a quick touch with the soldering iron on the various tant capacitors and the other just removed ( battery voltage is stable enough ) it and hey presto. You can normally tell the capacitors as they are the largest of the surface mount discrete components.

Hope this helps, haven't opened the iphone yet, but will see what I can find.

I'm going to assume that the Apple stores in America are far less friendly than here in Australia..

I recently bought a second hand iphone 4s, only to find the wifi greyed out. I was so mad, and after trying the basic troubleshooting (resetting etc., even fridge + heat method) i took it to a phone repairer. They replaced the wifi antenna which still didn't help.

Then I decided to call Apple. They asked for my serial number, and after confirming the phone was under 2 years old (it was even out of warrenty) they said to go into the store and it would be replaced, free of charge.

I'm so happy with Apple Australia's customer service, so if you're in Australia and think you'll have to pay for a new phone like it seems you unfortunately have to in America, think again!

I am from pittsburgh Pennsylvania

The same thing has happened to my phone. We have three iPhones in my household. It has not happened to the iPhone 5, only to my 4s. This phone is only 14 months old and like new, but it is out of warranty and Apple wants $200 to replace it. I went to the Apple store and they said it was a hardware problem and nothing could be done. The store was packed with people with the same problem. The employees did not even bother looking at anyone's phone, they simply stated it was a hardware problem and if in warranty were replacing the phones and if out, were stating it would be $200 for a new phone. It is disgusting to me that Apple treats it's customers like this when it was obviously a product defect that reared it's ugly head once the customers uploaded the IOS7. I am disgusted. If this defect is not recognized by Apple, as my family's 3 IPhones need replaced I will absolutely not buy apple products.

Ironically, I was just looking at buying a MAC since we need a new computer at my house , but after this experience I think I'll go with an HP or Dell product.

Go to Settings and turn Airplane Mode and Do Not Disturb ON

Power down and wait 5-10 minutes

Power up

Go to Settings and turn Airplane Mode and Do Not Disturb OFF

Hi, just to add:

I remember that when I turned on "Do Not Disturb" (from sidebar) It was the last time my WiFi was working. After that (2 hours aprox. with Do Not Disturb) when I tried to turn off my iPhone freeze and did not response. I forced to do a hard reset (home bottom and off bottom).

After this momment the WiFi have the same issue that all of you. All this happened at 2 days after installing iOS 7

Does anyone remember if it happened the same?

hi everybody,

i have to point out, that in the past days I only see people, write and write again the same issue, or post against apple support service, but NOBODY see the earlier pages of this topic.

in very firsts days after iOS 7 upgrade, me and other people did several tries to fix the problem, and if you go to read the pages u will find some solution too.

apple, as in is terms of services, suggest you to change the phone with a refurbished one for about 199 $, so is nothing special or different from other cases of assistance. if u wanna fix by yourself, is up to you, but it can be unsafe.

the wifi greyed out becasue the upgrade is a very stressful process for the wifi chip, that goes overheating.

so the iphone to avoid to broke itself, stops the services and need and "hardware" process to unlock.

in the topic you will found all the info you need.

PS: in the topic u will find also the instruction to go back to ios 6 but it is does not solve the issue, cause is indpending by the software. u can go back until the signature of your phone with old ios is still valid (usually a couple of days).

so, my pray is : please read before post.

thanks and regards.

Hi, i do not understand why i have to pay 200 dollars for a refurbished phone when mine was working ok until the upgrade. What garantee i have for the refurbished phone when my original phone is malfunctioning because of the new iOS. Both having the same hardware.

If the iOS7 stresses the wifi chip why they permit you to install it on a phone that does not support this new operating system ??. This is ridiculous.
