I had the same experience. Update bricked the Apple TV, had to go out and buy a micro USB cable ($13 at Target), still trying to get it to work. This is not how I wanted to spend my Friday night.

Apple claims that user experience is so important to them. Well this user (along with many others) is having a terrible experience! Are you listening Apple?

Who am I kidding? They already have my money, so why should they care.

I got bricked too. Used a uUSB from an old DrX long since retired. First attempt: Very long download, Error message, and no success. Second attempt: dumped systems that my computer runs, downloaded new itunes, rebooted computer, Performed entire AppleTV download again, this time it worked.

Next, re-load WiFi password, reload Nflx signon and password, seems okay now.

Lost time, about an hour, Very Frustrating.

In my opinion we are owed compnsation for this one!

Adding to the discussion.

Have v2 ATV and got bricked with the update. I first plugged in the micro USB while power was still on the ATV, then read I shouldn't have done that. I now have the unit just plugged into my MBP w/ micro USB and it doesn't show under Devices. I restarted the MBP and tried to plug in the ATV to my MBP again w/out the ATV showing in iTunes. Not sure where to go from here.

Same here. Bricked. I didn't even know you could connect an Apple TV to iTunes but it works. I used my wife's Kindle cable. Restored to 5.3 and didn't even think about trying again.

FYI: The trick with the silver remote where you press the menu button and down arrow for 6 seconds to force a restart does not work. Nor does Apple's other suggestion to remove the power source for 30 seconds. It appears this is a serious bug.

Now, I have heard from two people so far that connecting to the internet via Ethernet and not doing it over Wi-Fi works but I'm not yet convinced that isn't a happy coincidence.

The best way to ensure an error-free factory restore via iTunes is to unplug the Apple TV from the power supply and the HDMI cable. Just plug the Apple TV into your Mac via the single micro USB cord and nothing else and it should be pretty seamless.

The restore via iTunes brought the AppleTV up to 6. Did not need to run the update after hooking it back up to the television. Took about 30 min to download. Finally got all the accounts and passwords entered again. Glad it is working again. Frustrating for sure! I imagine that the update was not applies correctly because of the heavy hit the Apple servers are taking right now.

This is how it worked for me, i used an old nokia e-71 micro usb

1- unplug all cables on your ATV

2- plugm in your micro usb to your ATV and computer

3- plug in the power cable for you ATV.

4- your computer will recognice your ATV via iTunes and give you the option to restore your ATV, select yes.

5- when completed eject ATV from itunes and pull out ALL cables from your ATV.

6- now recconect all your regular cables to your ATV.(ethernet, hdmi, optical, power) after this your ATV will ask you for pasword and set up your remotes, and thats it i hope it works for you guys.

Same problem for me with the update. Went out and bought a belkin micro usb however connected the ATV to the computer but itunes did not see the ATV. Went to the neighbours and borrowed a microusb cable that he used to charge his phone, plugged it in to the MBP and itunes immediately found the ATV.

What did I learn? Don't buy the belkin micro usb cable.
