Rob have you downloaded Ibackupbot?
I prefer not to if I don't have to...
I'm guessing there is no other way around it Kurt?
Dude on my previous posts on page 7 explains why unfortunately I think you do. I was exactly the same as you I didn't want to use a third party software but I promise it's easy. follow my steps I've posted and if you want to ask any questions as you go ill answer as soon as I can.
I've posted a link for the software as there are some bad sites that have malware in them but the link I've posted is sound. ( on page 7)

ok thx man!
would have hoped a new os update would have fixed this by now; will give it a shot!
CHEERS (I'm in the wine business)!
thx!
I know mate it's bad of apple it's a big fault that's causing people to delete stuff they want to keep I love there products. But we shouldn't have to do this.
Let me know if it works
Good luck dude
Kurt
Ugh!! Been following your instructions carefully along with the whole iBackUpBot thing. And still NO luck. Almost to point of just restoring my phone to factory and starting over. The thought of that is kind of sickening though. :(
Dude try it with I cloud turned off especially the second sequence I will solve this if it kills me lol as I've done it so it's possible.
Tomorrow I'll start again dude just out of interest how much is your saved text taking in space? And how much memory have you actually got left ?
lol. Thanks. I really appreciate your effort.
I have 4.6 GB of Messages (Saved) and about 1.2 GB free at the moment.
iPhone 5 - 16gb
Disabled iCloud and then followed all of the steps....and nothing. :(
Then I tried re-enabling iCloud, rebooting, checking Messages and Mail back on, rebooting once again, disabling iCloud again, unchecking Messages and Mail again, then rebooted again...and nothing. (sigh)
Thank You
Ok now I know some people would prefer not to use the Ibackupbot which I totally understand as I was worried it was going to wreck my phone but I have tested it twice now and even though I have my space back I purposely filled up my saved text cache by sending myself loads of picture messages and videos so I had 1.5 gig in saved texts.
I then did the Ibackupbot procedure like I've described on page 7 step by step so if you havnt got enough space to restore your back up once you've completed the Ibackupbot delete enough space which means deleting videos, apps and pictures until you have about 4 gig in space and then do the restore as you will get all your stuff back once you have done the restore but all yor saved text cache will be emptied.
One thing to note is if you delete apps you may loose saved data such as game levels you have reached so videos and pictures might be your perfected choice.
You also might want to access all your pics and videos In my computer, click on the iPhone icon go into the folders and make a copy of all pictures and videos ( I do this every six months in case I loose my I phone or I got stolen anyway as you only get 5 gig on iCloud which was ok when you first have an Iphone but once youve had a couple over 4 years it's not very much space).
I hope this helps you guys still can't under stand how I got Lucerova way below to work for me and no one else can if you have six gig like some of you have mentioned might take six or more attempts.

Why it happens:
This is an issue with corrupted data, however, it is more of a user created problem than it is an iOS problem... Sorry... Allow me to explain.
Anytime you store data for long periods of time in an application that accesses that data often, you run the risk of having that data become corrupted. --Delete your message threads often.
How to fix it:
1. Select Settings > General > Spotlight Search
2. Un-Check Messages in the Spotlight Search
3. Delete all text messages that show in the Messages app
4. Open the multi-tasking bar by double tapping on the Home button
5. Close ALL running applications
6. Restart your phone
*You may have to repeat this process multiple times depending on how much storage your Messages app is currently using. In Settings > General > Usage, You may only see the mb or gb drop by a few hundred mb each time (don't panic). You need to continue repeating this process until the Messages app is only utilizing 20mb or less. --If you get stuck and you still have a significant amount of data used by Messages and no Messages to delete, Simply backup and restore your device at this point to empty the remaining caches and allow you to permanently remove the remaining data.
**Also be sure to re-enable Messages in your Spotlight Search. Select Settings > General > Spotlight Search
Preventative Tip:
Always ensure to clean out your Messages often, as well as restarting your device often. iOS has self maintaining functions that only run on startup. As long as you don't allow your message threads to over-populate after extended time periods, you will not need to repeat these steps.

I'll try it all again from step one including iBackUpBot. We'll see. 😕
Misternine make sure to do the restore from I tunes and no Ibackupbot
Yeah, thanks. That's the way I did it before. I got the whole "Not enough memory to restore" message.
I'll try it all again once I get home. Thanks again for your help. I'll reply with my results.
Mate I know it's rubbish but delete aload of stuff so you can make the restore in I tunes as you will get it back when restore completes. You will need about 4 gig of free space ,
You will get your apps back but such as games you may loose progress so stick to pictures and videos which will all be saved when you've backed it up on iTunes. However just in case go into my computer and into the I phone Icon open up where all your photos and vids are and make a copy of them.
Just in case dude
Cheers Kurt
