Playing iPhone 5s slow-motion video via AirPlay on an Apple TV

Anyone having trouble playing slow-motion video via AirPlay on an Apple TV? I've got the iPhone and Apple TV updated to the newest iOS versions, other videos play fine through AirPlay, but any shot with the new Slow-motion feature only have their sound come through, no picture.

Quick update. Still can't get slo-mo to work on ATV from 5s. It does work from my iPad (latest).

The work flow I previously mentioned can be shortened. I can Airdrop the slo-mo clip to my iPad then play it directly to ATV. No need to go through iMovie, unless you want the benefits of editing while retaining slo-mo.

I also determined that by sharing the slo-mo clip to iCloud, others that are subscribed to that folder can view the clip. I can also play back the clip to ATV from my 5s if that clip is chosen from my iCloud folder (not the original clip stored locally on the phone).

However, I can't consistently upload a slo-mo clip to iCloud. Sometimes they upload, sometimes they don't.

Once they get to iCloud, they work as expected - except ATV still can't see them in iCloud.

What's not clear is what the fps is from iCloud to ATV. I'd like to say that my tests suggest that ATV can playback native slo-mo, but once uploaded to iCloud, or transferred via Airdrop to my iPad, I don't know what the fps is and whether it remains native 120fps.

Got notification of another new Apple TV update last night... but unfortunately (well, given the expectations spurred by this thread anyway) it was just to add Disney Junior. Vimeo and Youtube seem to play them at a very high framerate (Vimeo moreso than Youtube). I don't know how high, but it still manages to show things very clearly. I say "Vimeo moreso than Youtube" because when I uploaded to Vimeo in HD, it was 53mb, and when I uploaded the same one to Youtube in "HD", it was only about 15mb (it was a short video).

@DDF99 Thanks for all the details - if I could get my wife to upgrade to iOS 7, I'd gladly take your route! 🙂

I sure hope Apple takes care of this issue right away. It makes no sense they allowed it to be released without testing.

They also need to update their built in facebook upload function. It needs to let us upload at full resolution and give us choices if we want it on our timeline or a page you have setup.

DDF99 -- Really helpful post. Thank you.

I can also confirm iP5s slo-mo videos do not show up in Apeture's shared streams.

Also, uploading slo-mo videos to shared streams from my iP5s is not working at all (not hit and miss, all misses so far). You see the clip key frame, but when you select the clip you just get an endless spinning ticker thing...

Only think that works is share via email. But the compression hit is very significant.

I've read that you can import to Final Cut but slo-mo is not preserved. However, 120fps is preserved, so you select the clip section and slow that section down to 25% and you have slo-mo again. But that's a **** of a crappy workflow!

The "full res" iP5s slo-mo feature should be billed as "Can shoot, can't share!"

It's not a software bug, I've just got off the phone to apple support we went through lots of different scenarios while I was reading all of the comments on here, it's a wifi bottleneck , my latest 5g virginmedia super hub isn't enough to airplay/ mirror any slow mo video only audio comes through.

The fix, connect Apple TV to Ethernet (pulled the one from PS3) and it works fine now all the family can view on the big screen.

Happy!

I'm going to agree and stick with it being a bug of some sort. I imported one with Preview last night and if gave me the movie file along with a .SLM file. I'm guessing this is where it keeps the cues for when to slow mo and when to speed up, similar to the orientation file with pictures. Maybe Apple TV has an issue where it doesn't read this properly. Or just the header on the 120fps file throws it off. Either way I'm still sticking with a software issue.

Side note, when played with QuickTime, a "slow" button appears and you can speed it up and play it back at will. Pretty cool.
