Major Problem with Keyboard Shortcuts in iOS 7

There's a significant issue with keyboard "Shortcuts" after upgrading to iOS 7. If you try to access the shortcuts (Settings > General > Keyboard > Shortcuts), it may not let you and may instead "kill" the Settings app and return you to your home screen (it may let you in at first, but will kick you out after about 30 seconds). I have done a lot of testing and have been on with Apple for about 3 hours (the guy was great, even though we weren't able to fix it yet).

We determined that you may experience this problem if:

1. You are running iOS 7 and either (a) upgraded from iOS 6 to iOS 7, or (b) have restored from a device that either ran iOS 6 or was upgraded to iOS 7

AND

2. if you have turned "On" the option under iCloud to sync "Documents and Data"

The Apple rep was ultimately able to replicate the issue and it was through the testing that we reached the above conclusions. You may be able to go into Shortcuts at first (by tapping the Shortcut button), but after a few minutes it may kick you out and send you to the Home screen. If that happens, you won't be able to get back into the shortcuts. Post here if you experience this issue, or if you have any additional info. Apple is actively looking into it and hopefully we'll get a fix soon.

I don't have a Mac and I solved my problem.

It was difficult to delete all shortcuts

I suggest the following steps to ensure all shortcuts from all iOS devices and iCloud are deleted before re-entering them:

1. Make a hard hand copy of all your shortcuts

2. Disable "Documents and Data" iCloud sync on all your iOS devices

3. Delete all your shortcuts on all your devices. If in this process one device freezes, wait up to one minute and it may unfreeze by itself. Device may freeze several times unless you are lucky to delete the faulty shortcut. If a faulty shortcut could not be erased, let it there

6. Re-enable "Documents and Data" in only one of your iOS devices, the preferred one

7. Wait hours with device plugged to the recharger wifi connected and check if the shortcut list reappears or not

8. If shortcuts reappear, delete all of them again but now with "Documents and Data" enabled only on this preferred device

9.Test disabling and re-enabling "Documents and Data" only on this preferred device, in 30 minute intervals, with charger and wifi connected deleting all shortcuts if they reappear. Persist in this device until you get rid of all shortcuts.

10. Re-enable "Documents and Data" on the other iOS devices and check if shortcuts are blank. If not, wait 30 minutes

with charger an wifi connected.

Hi,

I have same problem since I updated to iOS 7.0.6. I have iphone 5, mini ipad and mac air, all sync with icloud and never had problems until... last update. I have already tried almost all procedures I found on the web but... nothing solves it. I have a lot of shortcuts and I really need them! What happens is that sometimes they are there for a couple of minutes and then they just disappear. I am getting desperate! Do you think ios 7.1 will fix this? Do you know if Apple is working on it?! I doubt... :-( I am just hating Apple now!

Same situation here. First shortcuts wouldn't update nicely across 2 iphones/iPad and OSX, sometimes freeze briefly and now finally they're all gone.

I can't even add new ones.

Tried "Reset all Settings", to no avail.

Turning off "Document ..." in iCloud Settings results in showing me an old status of the shortcuts, but obviously I'm not not syncing then.

Swithing "Documents..." back on, removes all previous shurtcuts and I again can't add new ones, let alone that it would show me the ones stored in the iCloud.

OSX is the only system now properly showing what shortcuts are in fact store in the cloud.

At this point and having started all over again, the iCloud account still seems corrupt as every device, while connected with that particular account, thinks it has its own shortcut space...no syncing at all!!!

quick update:

  • I removed the iCloud configuration from my iPad and Mac
  • then went to icloud.com, logged in and clicked "Reset Document.." under Account Settings > Advanced
  • then setup the iCloud accounts on the Mac and iPad

this made it work again for the Mac and iPad.

Unfortunately I hadn't removed the iCloud accounts on the 2 phones, so those didn't start working again, and you can only reset once in 24h.

so next time, I'll try to remove all iCloud accounts on all devices, then follow above steps and re-enable the iCloud link on all devices again.

Ok, good news, here is a solution that works!!

This I have tested individually (to confim) with my 2 iphones and the iPad that wouldn't sync properly keyboard shortcuts via iCloud. You can do the below for all your device at once, too.

  1. Go here and follow the instructions (easy): http://allezxandre.clarify-it.com/d/dhvzkz
if you backup and restore via the above method, none of your settings/apps will be deleted, everything stays intact
  2. After restoring, turn off "Documents and Data" under your iCloud settings and hard reset devices (home + lock)
  3. Then log into icloud.com, go to Account Settings, Advanced, click on Reset Documents and Data
  4. Turn on "Documents and Data" in your iCloud Settings (device) and again reboot
  5. Check "Documents and Data" setting, status may have changed (on/off)

You may have to repeat 4. and 5. - I had to with one of the iPhone as the status would have a mind of it's own, but eventually the keyboard shortcuts will be back. On all devices.

The above takes roughly an hour with all the backups, restores etc. BUT it's non intrusive, ie. your device data and settings aren't touched!

I'm using iPhone 5 and iOS 7.1

My shortcuts disappear and stop working in messages a short while after my iPhone is turned on. They will be there for a short while after I have turned it off and turned it back on again, but will disappear usually a short while after I start messaging.

BUT...

I can assure you 100% that this has nothing to do with iCloud in my case, since I have never synced with iCloud and never will... not once in all my iPhone years. 🙂

So this is happening on my iPhone 5, without any syncing with iCloud or any other device.

Now another thing that helps in my case - I actually have only two shortcuts in my list. So, based on all the posts here, this is my working theory right now:

- one of the shortcut names is messing this all up (that seems to be agreed on throughout these posts) OR the file containing the shortcuts is corrupt on the whole

OR (which is my preferred theory and in testing as I write)

- as soon as one of my shortcut names clashes with a word contained in the autocorrection dictionnary and I use it in my messaging, it seems to mess things up.

1. I have now deleted all my shortcuts (all two of them ;D )

2. restarted the phone and checked that the list of shortcuts was really empty

3. I went into any messaging program and checked first for a combination of letters that were NOT in the dictionnary and would not be autocorrected (which was really hard because they seem to have added loads of stuff to the autocorrection in iOS 7)

4. I added that as new shortcut name for the expression I actually want.

Works so far, but then - I'll know more two days from now.

But even if this works for me - for all those who do sync, they would still have to make sure that they don't sync the problem back onto their device from iCloud after they have solved it (which is where iCloud probably comes into the problem).
