HELP - Greyed Out (Ghost) songs in iTunes Devices iPhone Music

I am so frustrated I am sure someone knows the answer to this question but I have yet to find it. I just upgraded to IOS 7 on my iPhone and I upgraded my iTines to thelatest and greatest version. Now when I connect my phone to iTunes and look at the phone under device I see that there are a number of songs listed...all are greyed out and can not be selected. NONE of these songs are on my iPhone. I AM using iTunes Match and have been since Jan 2013. I had a similar issue with the last upgrades and for the life of me can not remember how I fixed it. I have a feeling that I had to completely eliminate everything from my library which is something that I do not want to do.

Does anyone know of a fix for this problem? I have tried everything that I can think of...from shutting off iTunes Match on my phone from reloading iTunes Match within iTunes. This is what my screen looks like...

Most but not all of these songs are in my Itunes Music. Originally the all were there but in my attempt to solve the problem I deleted some from my Itunes (on purpose) to see if any individual some was the problem.

No suggestion is silly - I have tried many things - too many to list and I am truly getting desparate. I truly believe that this is an Match issue but I can't find any resolution for the problem. When I take all music off of my phone as it is right now the problem still exists. If I add music the music that is added will be seen in black lettering beside the grey lettering listing...that is in iTunes. I am sorry if I am not making any sense it is easier to show someone than to explain it.

Thank you for any assistance...

oh yes - I am using a Windows XP as my Operating...I know time for an update but my laptop works so well - so far anyway and I hate to invest $ where I don't need it YET. ;-)

Here is how I fixed the problem on my Windows PC:

I had all my media stored on C:\ITUNES and moved it to C:\USERS\PROFILE NAME\MY MUSIC - name of logged in user.

In the settings [Edit/Preferences/Advanced - I unchecked copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library and in the Store tab check Automatic Downloads/Music

Also if you move music to another folder in the Edit/Preferences/Advanced make sure you change iTunes media folder location

I found two folders in C:\USERS\PROFILE NAME\MY MUSIC, iTunes and iTunes Media and subfolders that contained duplicate downloaded items. You may have to check each subfolder. Once I moved the media into my iTunes folder the greyed out songs disappeared.

If you don't want to move your music, check these folders and move the media to your current iTunes. In future, you know where they are stored.

The greyed out songs were stored in separate folders other than in iTunes . Also by moving the media to the profile folder I can now play protected songs which I was not able to before.

Note: I don't use iTunes Match

I hope this helps.

Hello folks, I found an working solution! it worked for every one I helped for now. apple may not like it but when you don't use iTunes but copytrans from copytrans.net to upload you music to your i device it will work. I don't work for copytrans nor am I in any way connected to them, they just happened to make it possible to upload music to an iPhone, something apple is supposed to supply us with with iTunes

Kind regards

Compieter

I have been struggling with this too. I saw a thread where people were using some app called ifunbox to manage the music in a folder tree, but I got the app and failed with it. So then.... I just started dinking around in itunes and the issue resolved itself. I am not sure exactly what I did other than I went into the sync preferences and unchecked every box except "manage songs... manually'. then I hit sync. Voila! All the songs that were previously ghosted out were now available to play on my iphone. Sorry I can't give better tech advice. I kind of stumbled on this solution and was only half-paying attention to the sequence of the changes I made. All I know is that when I hit sync after unchecking all those boxes about auto-syncing and that, the problem vanished. I hope this helps someone spomewhere.

I had this problem, and got fixed it (temporarily) by deleting all of the songs and reloading them onto my phone. But the next time I synced my phone, there were phantom songs that didn't show up at all on "my device" on iTunes--not even grayed-out. They were ONLY on the device itself. They are unchecked and, strangely, have none of my modifications to their information (like artist alterations, or genre alterations) that I have made through the years (those modifications still show up normally in my music library on iTunes, and the song still shows up unchecked). I can get rid of them by clearing and reloading my songs, and have done this three times already. Different, unchecked songs keep appearing back on my phone though. I have looked through apple forums for over 5 hours searching for a solution, and haven't even been able to find anyone with the same problem. I've tried all of the obvious things (yes, I have sync only checked songs; yes, I have tried manually managing music; yes, I have made sure there are no ongoing downloads; and no, there are no gray circles or anything--the songs are only ON THE PHONE ITSELF and do not display in itunes at all, anywhere). I've also tried most of the weird things (like downloading ifunbox and rummaging around in the purchased folder of my iphone). I even tried switching to mediamonkey, cuz I'm really sick of this and almost ready to toss my phone and laptop out the window and drive to the mall to get new ones. If anyone has heard rumors of this, I'm begging for your help. The problems all started when I was forced to download iTunes 11. I have iOS 7.

Had the same issue, so frustrating. Finally got it; try these steps:

From your phone:

Settings > Music - toggle "Show All Music" to off.

Open music app - identify all songs that are on your device.

Settings > Music - toggle "Show All Music" to on.

From the music app, download songs from iCloud identified in step 2

Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage > Music > Edit > All Songs > Delete

(Optional) Settings > Cellular - In "Use cellular data for" locate Music App and toggle off.

Settings > Music - toggle "Show All Music" to off.

Sync with iTunes

At which point I had about three quarters of them gone. If there are more remaining:

Download and install iExplorer http://www.macroplant.com/iexplorer/

Plug in device first, then open iExplorer

Delete the iPhone\Media\iTunes_Control folder (you may want to copy this, just in case)

Restart the iPhone / iPad

Start iTunes. Not restore iPhone from back up, select New iPhone (don't worry, you will not lost apps or data on your iPhone doing this)

Sync with iTunes
