iPhone 5s Power Button Loose/Rattling Noise

Today I had scheduled a Genius Bar appointment for my loose rattling power button. I can hear it rattle when I record video and move around, the video even records the sound and it interferes with the video. It is also bothersome, in general, to have a rattling noise on my phone. The "genius" had me unlock the phone (since I have a passcode/fingerprint I.D) and he took it to the back to take a look at it, came back and said there's nothing wrong and that it's the "vibrating motor." Yeah, sure. I place my finger on the power button and move my phone and it has 0 rattling, when I let go it rattles like a maraca. I then asked him if he could open it and try and fix it for me, and he told me that he had just opened it and everything checked out fine. Another lie, he gave me my phone back unlocked and into my settings. If he opened it it would have been turned off, and on again which would request my passcode which he doesn't have. My previous iPhone 3/4S/5 has never done this and I see it as a simple fix if they were to really open it. I have fully purchased a new iPhone every year for the past 3 years and when I encounter a problem I'm lied to and told there is nothing I can do about it. I'll be scheduling another appointment soon in hopes I get a different employee that will actually help me.

What I want to know is, is there a fix to this?
When I take videos it captures the rattling noises ruining the video.

iPhone 5s received today. Power button rattles and can definitely be heard during videos.

Looked on YouTube and many people have posted videos demonstrating the same issue. This is clearly a manufacturing defect. Hopefully Apple can implement some sort of mass fix. ***** that this issue is the only complaint I really have with the phone.

The alternative of waiting months to receive a better built iPhone doesn't seem like a great alternative either. I've submitted a complaint under the feedback section on the Apple website, so hopefully other people reading this board take the time to do the same.

It has not been 6 hours since I bought my iPhone 5s 32 Grey.

First phone call I get a rattling in my phone.

I have had the 3, 3GS, 4, 4S.

This is the first time I feel like I bought some cheap Chinese junk.... actually no. First day using my Macbook Pro the 'Z' key became stuck and felt different from the rest of the keys.

Quality control in apples overseas manufacturing plants seem to have diminished.

I am doomed to rattling?!

this happens when a company gets the aim out ouf focus, to satisfy its customers with its products, by the quality...

New customers migh not care, but people who buy apple stuff for a long time by now, can see how the quality, the workmanship of the goods gets more and more worse...

As if apple does get enough money for their producs, they are trying save on quality and quality control.

I'm sorry to say, but all of the flagship tablets of other companies, like samsun, feel better in your hand than the AIR IPAD, even they are plastic.

The ipad however has not much plastic inside but APPLE succeeded to make it feel like a baby toy.

Congratulations.. I sent all stuff back and waiting for products with a quality, which are worth the price, sir!

Picked up my 32GB Space Grey 5S yesterday from the Apple store and unsurprisingly I've got a rattler as well. The build week is 44 so manufacured only two weeks ago. Lucky for me i don't take much video, and when i do im certainly not running down the street or engaging in other such rigourus activity where a Go-Pro would be a more suitable recording device. I do remain curious why some of you are flailing the phone around at all during recording but I suppose that's besides the point.

I too am very annoyed with this rattling issue. Trust me. I consider myself to have "Apple OCD" as well and these little imperfections irk me to no end. Both my 4S and 5 had annoying little issues like this and I must have gone through about 7 or 8 phones between the two. However, I'm also about 99% certain that Apple will not be doing anything about this issue because really, at the end of the day, there are about 749 other things that could go wrong with the device and this is probably seen as relatively minor in the grand scheme. Of course, I would LOVE if Apple manufactured a new slightly larger/better fitting power button and began to offer free in-store replacements for those affected, but I'm a bit doubtful this will happen. Apple: please prove me wrong.

Anyway, for now, we should probably be looking for ways to remedy this ourselves if it's going to bother us so much. As in, there must be some friendly material out there which can simply be placed into the "slack" area of the button cutout to effectively stop the rattling while still keeping the button's functionality unaffected. Some of you DIYer's may be able to find something, and I will certainly be exploring various options. I am also hopeful that some of those third-party "spare parts" suppliers may soon manufacture an improved ("larger") button that can be swapped out with Apple's.

I know that I'll be crossing my fingers for any of the above solutions to become a reailty. And if anyone has any ideas on material that can fill the empty space of the power button cutout while keeping usage unaffected, please post them here.

I can't believe people would even contemplate fudging a fix on a brand new premium price device to solve a problem that shouldn't exist in the first place. 😮

Not all 5S units rattle - http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1670488http://

Personally I think the best course of action for those who don't want a sub par unit is return for refund and reorder. At some point you may get a unit that doesn't rattle and lots of returns may help Apple focus on the issue.

I do not believe, at all, that those reporting "no rattle" actually do not have a rattle.... They either have just not noticed it or simply have a much higher threshold for imperfections and are thus disinclined to see it as such. Some people are so non-OCD that they are immune to noticing such things.

The vast majority if not all iPhones have this rattle to some degree, from minimal or hardly audible ("no rattle here!") to maximal ("I hear it while I'm on the phone!").

I will say that I cannot fathom why on earth you would return such a highly coveted device for a refund to then downgrade to an older "boring" model over a slight tinny sound coming from the newer device's button housing. I must admit, I've been through this game before. Each device will have something you don't like and theres about an 85% chance you'll just get another rattler every time you try to exchange. Eventually, they will stop handing you new phones. I know because it's happened to me. Do you return your car because the brake lever has a bit of give?

I have first hand experience of 5s units that don't rattle but unfortunately they belong to other people or are demo models in stores. Having experienced the issue on my own 5S's I was very careful to "notice" the lack of rattle on these units.

If the unit rattles and has the potential to affect another key feature such as audio recording it's a fault. The fact you may not record very much doesn't excuse the issue for those that find it a problem. My earlier iphones don't rattle like the 5s believe it of not. 😁

If you're happy with a sub par rattle unit that's fine but others are not.

I went back to the AT&T store I got the iPhone 5s yesterday and the Apple store... ALL of the iPhone 5s I checked even those people just bought and unboxed RATTLED. The iPhone 5C floor model did NOT rattle.

No point in exchanging the phone now... I'll wait months till they fix the manufacuting standard... which is STUPID since apple is suppose to be a QUALITY product.

I have no patience for the rattle. At all. But like I've said, if the vast majority are going to rattle, why waste your time going back and forth to the Apple store? Been there, done that. All of the threads I've read about this seem to point to rattle and more rattle. If replacement models seemed promising, then I'd be at the Apple store right now instead of typing this, but they certainly do not seem promising. I encourage you to Google this issue where you will come across numerous people exchanging them, returning them, having new ones sent to them and the consensus is almost always "It still rattles!"
