iPhone 5s Power Button Loose/Rattling Noise

Today I had scheduled a Genius Bar appointment for my loose rattling power button. I can hear it rattle when I record video and move around, the video even records the sound and it interferes with the video. It is also bothersome, in general, to have a rattling noise on my phone. The "genius" had me unlock the phone (since I have a passcode/fingerprint I.D) and he took it to the back to take a look at it, came back and said there's nothing wrong and that it's the "vibrating motor." Yeah, sure. I place my finger on the power button and move my phone and it has 0 rattling, when I let go it rattles like a maraca. I then asked him if he could open it and try and fix it for me, and he told me that he had just opened it and everything checked out fine. Another lie, he gave me my phone back unlocked and into my settings. If he opened it it would have been turned off, and on again which would request my passcode which he doesn't have. My previous iPhone 3/4S/5 has never done this and I see it as a simple fix if they were to really open it. I have fully purchased a new iPhone every year for the past 3 years and when I encounter a problem I'm lied to and told there is nothing I can do about it. I'll be scheduling another appointment soon in hopes I get a different employee that will actually help me.

What I want to know is, is there a fix to this?
When I take videos it captures the rattling noises ruining the video.

So I brought my 4 iPhone 5s models into the Apple store for a support ticket. I am still in the return window for my carrier but I wanted to get to the bottom of this.

It seems like a ton of Apple fans are defending the rattle. This was not the case at the Apple store.

When I told the tech my problem, he held the phone to his ear and was suprised to hear how loud the rattle sound was. He told me he had never seen that problem with the 5s.

So imagine his suprise when I pulled out three more brand new iPhones out of their box and they did the same thing. Other customers at my table started to lift their new phones to their ears and about half noticed the rattle and started to complain as well.

The tech told them that they would all get phones that didn't rattle...and new ones. Not refurbed. He agreed that it was a problem but also stated he had no idea up until today.

So maybe your iPhone has a small rattle in the camera housing....If I shake even my 4 hard enough I can hear a slight, tiny rattle. This is not the same sound coming from about half of the iPhone 5s models. The sleep button rattles even if you hold it down AND the camera housing rattles AND (according to the tech) the battery might be loose too.

Return it. Rattles are an indication of poor assembly and your phone will fail before it should. Apple has your back. They will take it back up to ONE YEAR after purchase.

OR - You can accept it and tell Apple that it is OK to make products that rattle. Then, when Apple quality plumets further because you told them quality didn't matter, you can sleep in the bed you made.

Me? I love the company. I helped bring three new mac labs to my university where I teach. I worked in the mac labs at Georgia Tech as a student and setup a mac lab at my highschool when a student there. I have used them since the Mac Classic and I won't let a company I care about slip into a habit of making crappy products. I will return 1000 iPhones if they do not meet my specs. That's my right.

What I don't get is random people coming on here just to say "deal with it". You don't know the specifics of our problems AND THE PEOPLE AT APPLE ARE SAYING IT IS A BIG DEAL.

You are the only one who knows if its suit you or not, me too i made 4 changes, second one the power button was so loose, but the second it was so strong, and only you can hear it if you shake it hard, i mean when you shake it softly it doesnt give a noise. so i thought dealing with it it will be okey.

but after reading all people here i decided make change and refund.

cause i'm not telling for you to keep it, ofcourse change it.. but depend on the power button, some are loose little some are so loose. if so loose then kick it back ofcourse.

but dude, the problem is one. do we will get this iphone 5s which don't rattle before releasing of new iphone?

somehow became like despair to believe, it is like 1 million dollar lottery. hard to believe.

simply i refund my iphone, and i made new order today on apple store, im afraid if it will be same problem, they offered me today free case apple. but this is the last time i make order iphone 5s, if i will not get it well, i send back. and forget something call iphone 5s. other way i will be buy it used. at least its opened i check it and then i buy it.

by the way, i found used iphone 5s which don't rattle, but it was AT&T and i don't wanna this, i'm not from usa. so i did not care for it even.

I'm not saying deal with it, I'm saying after months and months new phones built in December are still coming with the rattle, the chances of getting one without are rare, and different Apple sores say different things. Most Apple stores now say its within spec actually. I cant see that as being right, but thats the view. Also if you bothered to look at my profile you would see I have an iPhone 5s which did rattle so don't assume I don't understand your issue, and I'm not an Apple fan, I just use some of their products, but they are far from the holy grail of electronics as some people seem to think. I went though four iPhones and they all rattled, in the end mine stopped though which was odd but i'm happy it did. All the ones I have seen personally rattle, some more than others but they all rattle. Maybe some dont, but I have seen reports that the ones that dont sometimes start to rattle after time.

What I am saying is returning a phone dozens of times is pretty futile. You either put up with it which seems wrong to me actually, or get a refund and move on. People have lives to get on with, being OCD with a phone (I have OCD issues so I know) just gets you nowhere believe me. Waiting for Apple to sort this could prove to be a waste of time, Apple says its within spec, the stores that dont only find that they all rattle anyway and in the end they will say its within spec as there is nothing they can do to get you one that wont. So make a choice, but this thread will not make anything better sadly.

I have power button rattle problem with my new 5s but never had same problem with my old 5 and wounder how to fix it.

While googling to find a possible solution to fix power button rattle, I found a parts name iphone5s power button foam spacer.

You can google it and see how it looks like.

It seems this foam spacer is designed to go right under the power button and reduce the rattle and noice. Which really makes sence. However when I check the iphone5s teardown review photos from the net, it seems 5s missing this foam spacer.

I never openned my 5s or 5 so cannot be sure if 5s really lack the foam spacer and cause this rattle. However if it is really caused by a lack of a foam from assembly of by faulty foam for the matter, I wonder if apple can provide us a repair for this.

I have a hard time to believe this power button noice is by design as apple claims because my iphone5 is not making any rattle or noice.

Bravo for the research, this makes good sense to me.. I mean, I kind of made a " inside/out foam spacer" by using foam from chair knobs inside my case as I mentioned earlier, and that made the rattle go away, but that's WITH a case, though. So yeah, I don't have the balls to open my 5S and check if there is a foam spacer inside, but I'm pretty sure there isn't one. Apple should repair this quite easily if this is the problem..

Divyendu, I just bought my second 5s gold from Mumbai, India. Not only is the power button loose, but the phone has scratches on the bezel! I'd suggest you thoroughly check your phone before inserting the SIM card which activates it. This way your reseller can replace it for you on the spot or give a refund. But so far I haven't found a perfect 5s without the rattle. Goodluck!

Jan 19, 2014 11:09 PM in response to adipatel

Adipatel thanx for your suggestion bro...So many 5S having the same problem....But i'm not in favour of getting iphone repaired...because manufactured in factory under surveillance of computers & robots. But when you take it to apple support center....there will a man who repairs it....things can go wrong if any small circuit or wire get broken...or some sensor already working fine can go out of order.

So i would like to stay with this rattle rather then repairing or replacing untill Apple find this issue.

A friend of mine got his iphone replaced & now he got a piece that sensors are working incorrectly...
