iPhone 5s Power Button Loose/Rattling Noise

Today I had scheduled a Genius Bar appointment for my loose rattling power button. I can hear it rattle when I record video and move around, the video even records the sound and it interferes with the video. It is also bothersome, in general, to have a rattling noise on my phone. The "genius" had me unlock the phone (since I have a passcode/fingerprint I.D) and he took it to the back to take a look at it, came back and said there's nothing wrong and that it's the "vibrating motor." Yeah, sure. I place my finger on the power button and move my phone and it has 0 rattling, when I let go it rattles like a maraca. I then asked him if he could open it and try and fix it for me, and he told me that he had just opened it and everything checked out fine. Another lie, he gave me my phone back unlocked and into my settings. If he opened it it would have been turned off, and on again which would request my passcode which he doesn't have. My previous iPhone 3/4S/5 has never done this and I see it as a simple fix if they were to really open it. I have fully purchased a new iPhone every year for the past 3 years and when I encounter a problem I'm lied to and told there is nothing I can do about it. I'll be scheduling another appointment soon in hopes I get a different employee that will actually help me.

What I want to know is, is there a fix to this?
When I take videos it captures the rattling noises ruining the video.

William,

Regarding the 5C, it shouldn't have the rattle because it's constructed differently. A brother of mine has a 5C 16gb and mother owns a 5C 32gb and none rattle. I handled the 5C and the power/sleep button doesn't move or rattle. It's rock solid. All other buttons are solid too. If your 5C rattles like the 5S, I'd suggest looking into it at an apple store. The 5C is a solid piece of hardware and it shouldn't rattle.

Thanks,

Are you sure? I just went to the store and got a replacement. When at the store the replacement's button seems okay so i bought a case, put it on and took it home. After I installed everything I took the phone out of the case and realize the rattle is still there, definitely much smaller rattle but there's still a rattle there. it definitely feels different from the volume rockers, which are super snug.

Thanks

Noticed the rattling on my 32g iphone 5s the day I got it. Read some things online about people having the issue, so I took it into an Apple store to get a fix. Before talking to someone I decided to check out the phones they have on display to see if they rattled... I listened by ear and made videos on them and... all of the iphone 5s' (no matter the color) I checked had the same problem with the power button. Videos had a horrible rattling sound in them. So after that check I decided not to see if I could get mine fixed b/c I figured I'd just get another phone w/ the same problem.

Hi,

my iPhone 5S (32GB, grey) has the same issue, the Power Button rattles. I think i will wait a little and in a few months i will go to Apple Store again an ask if there is a solution. I had been there, but all 5S seems to have this Problem. I tested 10 in the store in Dresden/Germany.

My iPhone 5S also have a warmer color temperature than my iPhone 4, but you only see this by comparing them.

Yes I am sure. There is no rattle from the power button on the 5C. I verified this again and definitely there is not rattle. I love the feel of the buttons for the 5C. The feel is the complete opposite compared to the 5S. I already decided to stop worrying about the rattling power button on my 5S and just learn to live with it as mentioned in the article below.

Hello everyone,

I am having the same problem with the 5s. I have exchanged a couple of them and they all rattle. I took a closer look at the device and the top button is loose. If you move it left and right with your finger you will see there is extra space, which is causing it to rattle when moved. If you hold the button in one direction it will stop making the noise. I also found it to affect the vibrate because you will hear the rattle. I contacted Apple and they told me it should not be doing this. The only thing we can do is visit Apple feedback page and keep reporting this until Apple addresses this issue.

Yes the problem remains...

I have had quite a few replacements now...

4 service part replacements and two brand new boxed replacements, a mixture of 16gb space grey, 16gb white and gold and a 32g space grey model.

One of my phones was sent back to Cupertino to be examined by specialist engineers?!

The "rattle' is apparently within spec and perfectly acceptable.

I don't agree with this at all!

I have also been told by another party that rattle is not in fact acceptable and I have had an apple store manager infact tell me that it is a design flaw!

The same apple store manager got quite irrate with me and went off and brought back his staff's handsets and said look for yourself, they all have the rattle!

It is a very poor design flaw but can be stopped by blowing onto and around the button which temporarily disengages the rattle...

Its a case of what is to be done next though?

I am in no way accepting a service part replacement at all! It devalues the handset as then nothing matches with regards to packaging and serial numbers etc...

I wasn't allowed to swap for a 5C despite escalating the issue as high as I could!

It has been an extremely costly exercise both in money and in time.

Apple are apparently not willing to address this.

General,

Apple needs to address this issue regardless. I am looking at two iPhone 5 and they do not make this noise. This is unacceptable on Apple's part. I paid $310 for a 32gb and it should be flawless! I am sure others around have paid more without the upgrade contract agreement price. It seems like the stores are more helpful in exchanging the device for a new one, but they all have the same problem. I have gone through 5 and no luck in getting one without the rattle. The most annoying part is when my phone vibrates from an incoming call the rattling starts. Apple should be paying attention to this forum and if not everyone should file a feedback to Apple though the website. I was thinking if we send this information over to a media or news outlet if that would catch their attention to addressing this issue. I believe everyone who purchased a phone with this defect should be given a brand new phone and not a replacement when this gets fixed. Wake up Cupertino, the guys over in China are not putting your device together properly.

Here is an update from my issue(s):

As noted before, I took the phone back 2 weeks ago and it had crashing internal apps. The phone was slow. The power button was loose and annoying. Then over the course of a week, the button still made the noise but didn't seem as loose. Maybe I was just use to it by now.

Anyway, I took the phone back to apple because it was still very slow. They plugged it in and the internal apps were crashing. So, guess what?? My replacement has the loose power button as well. Also, as my luck would have it, there is a nick on the shiny edge of the bezel on the front of the phone by the SIM card port! But on a good note, my phone is much faster. So there definitely was an internal problem with the phone.

Also, my girlfriends gold 5S was delivered yesterday. The first thing I did with hers was pick it up and shake it. Sure enough, I heard the rattle.
