iPhone 5s Power Button Loose/Rattling Noise

Today I had scheduled a Genius Bar appointment for my loose rattling power button. I can hear it rattle when I record video and move around, the video even records the sound and it interferes with the video. It is also bothersome, in general, to have a rattling noise on my phone. The "genius" had me unlock the phone (since I have a passcode/fingerprint I.D) and he took it to the back to take a look at it, came back and said there's nothing wrong and that it's the "vibrating motor." Yeah, sure. I place my finger on the power button and move my phone and it has 0 rattling, when I let go it rattles like a maraca. I then asked him if he could open it and try and fix it for me, and he told me that he had just opened it and everything checked out fine. Another lie, he gave me my phone back unlocked and into my settings. If he opened it it would have been turned off, and on again which would request my passcode which he doesn't have. My previous iPhone 3/4S/5 has never done this and I see it as a simple fix if they were to really open it. I have fully purchased a new iPhone every year for the past 3 years and when I encounter a problem I'm lied to and told there is nothing I can do about it. I'll be scheduling another appointment soon in hopes I get a different employee that will actually help me.

What I want to know is, is there a fix to this?
When I take videos it captures the rattling noises ruining the video.

They aren't going to do anything about it. Even if it is a design flaw or if they are defective, apple won't admit to it. Imagine what a loss they would take if they had to replace all these units with rattling power buttons. I'm disappointed too because apple employees won't even address my issue. When I inquired about the loose power button rattle, they said it was designed that way and that nothing could be done. I'll keep my phone until an actual solution is found. Meanwhile, a case will have to mask the rattle.

I agree with jonchild.

A case does not fix the problem because it still rattles. 5 different cases and no solutions. We should not have to be complaining about a design flaw or assembly line production. The "genius" who measured the space needed to fit the top button should not be designing Apple products.I have noticed the rattle affect 3 things with the phone.

1) Video recording

2) When you your phone is on vibrate it will rattle

3) Moving your phone around creates the iRattle sound

I have sent an email to CNN and provided this link. I thought Apple was all about "customer service" and great products! Apparently Apple is not standing behind their customers, but more or less concerned with mass producing the iRattle and its sales!

It's an awful situation...

I feel awful calling and complainging about it or going into store about the issue.

Its become embarrasing, feel like a nuisance but I rely on the phone and its features for my profession.

I could switch to another phone or manufacturer but after all i have invested in accessories and apps and itunes music etc it would cost a lot to be able to do so.

It was hinted in store that maybe I select another manufacturer as the iphone clearly doesn't reach my level of 'expectation' but I look at my level of expectation and it really is not that high!

I just want a phone that works as it should.

I haven't been rude or abusive at all and I even offered to downgrade to the 5C to eliminate the problem but this has just been met with 'no'.

I just got my iPhone 5s space gray 65 gb, I don't like it anymore, because when I move the phone from one side to the other it has a clicking sound. I took the phone 2 times to the apple store in otay ranch Chula vista and I got 3 different answer.

1. Battery loose

2. Camera loose by design

3. Power button

And one guy was saying, we know about the issue….ISSUE I reply . But is common on all the iPhone.

I got another 5s and two 5 iPhone and they don't rattle.

they just basically told me get the f%$#@k out. By employee (Jason Arguello) at Otay Ranch Store in Chula Vista Ca.

Is this common practice at you apple store? Do all iPhone 5s rattle like a maraca?

Jonchild,

I know how you feel. I went to an Apple store and met 6 different employees and two managers. They swapped the phone out 5 times and it still makes the same rattling noise due to top loose button. I am also embarassed to step back into that store for at least a couple of months.

I had a "genius" tell me it is the floating camera, but when I held the button in one direction and shook it there was no rattle. That is an automatic sign of a defect with the loose top button.

I also spoke with a Apple senior advisor who mentioned that we have 1 year warranty. That means in a couple of months if Apple fixes this problem we are entitled to exchange our device for a new one because this is clearly a defect in the design.

I tested the 5c phones and they do not rattle, but it is a downgrade and not willing change to a fruit of loom phone.

This is similar to what I explained earlier.

I had the store manager in my local apple store get really quite irrate.

He was rude and extremely condescending.

He said that it was design fault and that he could give me 10,000 iphone and they would all be the same. With that he asked me to wait and then returned with a handful of iphone 5S's that belonged to his staff, thrust them towards ame and said 'look, they are all the same! If it develops any other faults then we will gladly look at it for you'.

I have since ceased dealing with this store and all of my transactions have been moved to another.

I explained the situation to the other store and they didnt seem surprised as they had had a similar situation with regards to exchanging a faulty handset and they are an employee!!!!

I MUST ADD...

I did deal with a young lady from the Executive Relations team and she was fantastic. But again there is only so much she could do to help.

It is your right to keep returning or exchanging the device until you get one that does not have that defect according to a store employee. They also told me that I paid a lot of money for the phone and I am entitled to a flawless phone with no defective components. I suggest you guys keep returning and exchanging to see if you land by one without the rattle.

The other only option left is for Apple to admit there is a faulty top button that rattles, recall it and have everyone go and exchange their device. Similiar to a car manufacturer's recall system. If Apple trully cares they will announce a recall or a statement regarding the loose rattling button.

I agree with Poly.. They won't admit anything is wrong. Remember Antennagate? The response from Apple was that we were holding the phones wrong. Lol

But the 4S did come out 6 months later with a fix to the antenna issue. Does this mean they could possibly speed up production of iPhone 6? It's possible.

But in all seriousness, I have come to realize that it is a product mass produced in China on a factory line. Flaws will happen with any product. We are all Apple junkies I presume and want our products to be perfect.

Unfortunately it isn't perfect. But other than the rattle I'm pretty happy with the 5S. (Except for the scuff on the edge of my replacement).

All we can do is wait. And those of us who are loyal Apple junkies, we will get a new iPhone next year, or 6 months from now. In any case Apple is lucky to have loyal customers like us. Even if we annoy them with our issues!

My week 39 manufactured ip5S 64GB had an annoying sleep/wake rattle. I also have an ip4 and ip5 neither of which exhibit this. I contacted Applecare and was told "there should be no rattle - period" and a Genius Bar appointment was scheduled for me.

I attended the Genius Bar appoint which was pretty much a waste of time. The operative said it was normal for units to exhibit this issues rather than a fault. I expalined that this directly contradicted what I'd been told on two different occasions by Applecare and my other ip's didn't rattle. It wasn't a good experience and one reason I don't visit Apple retail stores.

In the end I returned the ip5s for refund because I was within the 14 day return period and I had another handset to use. Certainly not the good experience I was expecting and I'm now very wary of purchasing other Apple products.
