iPhone 5s Power Button Loose/Rattling Noise

Today I had scheduled a Genius Bar appointment for my loose rattling power button. I can hear it rattle when I record video and move around, the video even records the sound and it interferes with the video. It is also bothersome, in general, to have a rattling noise on my phone. The "genius" had me unlock the phone (since I have a passcode/fingerprint I.D) and he took it to the back to take a look at it, came back and said there's nothing wrong and that it's the "vibrating motor." Yeah, sure. I place my finger on the power button and move my phone and it has 0 rattling, when I let go it rattles like a maraca. I then asked him if he could open it and try and fix it for me, and he told me that he had just opened it and everything checked out fine. Another lie, he gave me my phone back unlocked and into my settings. If he opened it it would have been turned off, and on again which would request my passcode which he doesn't have. My previous iPhone 3/4S/5 has never done this and I see it as a simple fix if they were to really open it. I have fully purchased a new iPhone every year for the past 3 years and when I encounter a problem I'm lied to and told there is nothing I can do about it. I'll be scheduling another appointment soon in hopes I get a different employee that will actually help me.

What I want to know is, is there a fix to this?
When I take videos it captures the rattling noises ruining the video.

I should of refunded when I could. It's too late now, my 14 days are up. I never had this problem with my iphone 5 which I purchased release day. That phone was solid and I sold it to get my new iphone in gold. I also wanted to mention that I might have found a fix for the rattle.

I saw how previous posters mentioned that cases won't work to mask the rattle and your right. The majority of the cases don't work to hide the rattle. I tried a griffin survivor clear, a rocket fish clear, agent 18 slim shield, otterbox defender series and all those cases did not mask the rattle. I could still hear the rattle with all those cases on. I was looking for a case that put pressure on the power button to stop the rattle and I think I found the case that does exactly that.

The new leather case that apple made for the iphone 5S is it. I went yesterday to try it on my iphone 5S and it fits real tight that it puts enough pressure on the power button to mask the rattle. All the other cases made no difference and with this case it made a huge difference. It's not the best case, but I'm going to leave it on because it will stop the rattle on my iphone. This case won't fix the problem but it will hide it.

I just remembered that antenna problem that a previous user mentioned about the iphone 4. That problem was terrible, and apple issued those bumpers free of cost to iphone 4 users to fix the issue. I remember this really well because I bought the iphone 4 on release day and it clearly was an issue. Apple didn't issue new iPhones, but did issue bumpers. All of us have the right to own a new iphone 5S without a rattle and in perfect condition, but like I mentioned before, I don't see apple replacing millions of defective iPhones. Maybe they'll issue us a free case that masks the problem or maybe they'll fix the rattle for free at apple locations once this issue gets more widely known to the public. I honestly don't see either of those happening but, I won't lose faith just yet. I'll be patient as everybody else on this forum has been and wait for a response from Apple.

All we can do now is help other users focus their attention on this issue. Why? Because I know so many users that have this issue and yet they say nothing because it doesn't bother them and they think it's normal. I want to thank everyone here on this forum that shared with everyone else their issue. Apple needs to know that this is a defect because no other iphone, at least personally, has ever had this problem and I've owned all iPhones to date since the iphone 3G.

I have decided I am going to exchange my 5s for the 5c this evening. I heard from others it does not rattle and a 32gb is actually $100 less. I want a solid phone so I either return for my money back or get a 5c.

It technically is an iPhone 5 with some better enhancements minus the dual flash, camera features, and A7 chip the iPhone 5s has.

I will keep you guys posted on the iPhone 5c.

Does anyone here have an iPhone 5c?

A fiend has an iPhone 5s its a good phone but its a shame it done snot have the A7 chip, but it does not rattkle, saying that I have put a case on my iPhone 5 the same Apple case as mentioned by Polydeuces and now I cannot hear the rattle, for me thats fine but knowing I spent £709 on a phone that is really defective gets to me. If I was not so invested inApple I would now buy a Xperia Z1 but I am invested with Apple so I have little choice. 😟 I wonder what week 40 handsets are like.

Alchemistul,

Two members in my household own the iphone 5C. One in blue and the other in pink. The iphone 5C is one solid device, no rattles on the buttons. Power button is solid, and the phone itself feels good to the touch. It doesn't feel cheap at all. If I could do it all over again, I would of upgraded to the iphone 5C until the rattle on the 5S was fixed. If your still within the return period, you should check out the 5C. You certainly won't have the rattling power button like the 5S.

Let us know how it goes and if you get the 5C.

I bought a Gold 5S 16GB from Apple Store Regent Street (London) last Wednesday 16th October 2013. Not a clue which batch number it was from but it rattled really badly and sounded horrible when vibrating (especially when screen side up).

I ended up returning it on Sunday.... Quite annoyed, as the phone was fine apart from the rattling!!

I also queued up on at least 6 different mornings before there was even a delivery....

EDIT: Also, just remembered that upon returning the 5S at the Apple Store that the very first pre-programmed option for reason item was returned was: "Clicking / rattle when tapping the top of phone"

So clearly this is a known issue.

Hahaha. Apple...

I just remembered iphone 5 rattling because if loose battery. Seems they did not shake it, and now again, seems they did not shake it again...

just wondering why they design someting like noise cancellation when it rattles like a gay cobra...

Mine is on the way, one rattling and they will get it back.

Boy, you pay an arm and a leg to apple and fix it with a tape??!?!

hahaha no comment! Really..!

I got mine yesterday, first time even getting an iPhone, and run into this problem. That's seriously a joke, but I suppose I'm used to being bullied by these corporate monsters now. It's funny because I didn't have the problem last night when I opened it, but after hitting the power button about 2-3 times over the the course of the night, it became apparent. Seems like Apple couldn't perfect the power button size to make it fit right, and the slightest use of it, starts to unveil this problem. Whoever says this is normal is crazy. This is not normal and it's obvious that the rattle WILL get worse over time because it's loose and that's what loose things do. They get worse. I don't even want to deal with them this weekend, but I'll be returning my product on Monday. If the problem persists, I'm really going to get the word out and make sure it's corrected. I was expecting a great product. I feel ripped off and I'm usually not the one to complain.

**Also, I believe the main issue here is the fancy aluminum they used. If Apple used one of those nice hard RUBBER power buttons or an alternate material for the power button or the power buttons coating, this would not happen. However, they used the same material for both the casing and the power button and when they hit eachother, it makes that God-awful, cheap rattle sound. They don't want to admit it, but they messed up there and the metal on metal contact is the culprit.
