Removing safari history ios7

I have recently had this problem and discovered that the offending websites had been stored in the Reading List but were only visible once Show All was selected. Once I could see them I could swipe and delete them.

I had literally the exact same problem with almost all the symptoms you did.

This is how I fixed it without doing a bunch of random time consuming stuff (ps I tried resetting settings, clearing history and bookmarks and such, deleting my iCloud account just for a little moment and making sure that Safari was off in it, even tho it didn't have the account on anyways, but the website would still pop up in my top hits and bookmarks suggested after all this when I search example "apples" and still get "aXXX" website)

Anyways all I did was turn ON safari in iCloud and hit MERGE to merge the bookmarks and such with the iPhone to iCloud, then turned it back OFF and it have me the option to DELETE the data (ie bookmarks, top hits, suggested sites etc...) from my iPhone (in red) so I hit that and poof apples was just apples now and it worked, the ghost bookmark/ ghost history was gone.

If it still doesn't work, this is what a did moments before but I'm not sure if it had anything to do with it.

I deleted my iCloud account from the settings, turned off my phone, turned it back on and signed back into iCloud then did the above.

Settings/General/Usage/Storage/Safari/web site data/

Click on remove web site data.

I did this after a restore and safari turned on in settings.

No more freezing of Safari, Bookmarks are in Sync, delete and save works.

Thanks, this worked (actually did it prior to reading your post, ha ha).

I had the same issue until I remembered I had gone into "Settings", "General", "Restictions" and chose "enable restrictions". (It set up a password -- sort of parental controls -- and prevented the clearing of browser history). Actually a great idea for parents/guardians/employers who retain control/liability for the use of the phone.

Soon as I removed the "restrictions" I was able to clear the browser history within the program as designed.

Then why doesn't it have the clear history grayed out on iPad with the restrictions turned on? Maybe Apple should have it the same way on both devices!
