Wifi not working after upgrade to iOS 7

I have had the same WiFi issue. I have done many resets, including complete reset of the phone, the router etc. When looking at the iPhone the fact that the WiFi is not working will be evident under "About phone" menu, where it gives the IMEI number of the device etc. I took the iPhone to an Apple store. They admitted that this was a common occurrence. They said it was a hardware issue. They refused to accept it and said it was just a coincidence that it happened after the iOS update. I have another iPhone 4s and it did not develop that problem.

This issue has been addressed very elegantly in another post a few months ago in this forum by some one else who seemed to be very knowledgeable. That post indicated that the issue was not limited to the present iOS 7 update but goes back to many previous updates and not limited to iPhone 4s either. Prior iPhones and prior OS updates have experienced similar WiFi issues but not to the current extent, I believe.

So in short there is no point in blaming the people who post in this forum and imply that there is nothing wrong with Apple. I am a fan of Apple and have bought many devices from them over the years and I admire Apple.

Unfortunately I have never seen an Apple official acknowledge this issue let alone express any willinglness to do something about this problem.

In fact I blought an Android phone. I am slowly getting used to that OS, which is new to me.

Hopefully the next version of iPhone, perhaps 6 will be the one which will make me go back to Apple.

Daughter uses an iPhone 4s. In June 2013, it had a problem, which the 'genius' at the Apple Store identified as a 'faulty antenna'. The phone was out of warranty, so a replacement was offered and accepted. The replacemnt 4s worked fine. In September she went away to college. I pay the bills, and kept on about her data usage. She said her wi-fi wasn't working, and had ceased when she upgraded her iOS, hence why data usgae was so high. Her college town is smaller, no Apple store, so home for the Holidays she made a genius appointment today.

The 'genius' diagnosis: your wi-fi isn't working, i doubt it will work again, and since we are out of warranty (3 months on the replacement), here's a piece of paper which for $199 + tax you can get a replacement (new??) phone.

I'm not a techie. But there seems to be considerable question on this, and other feeds, whether her wi-fi issue is related to hardware or software. Esp since she has the 4s model. The diagnosis suggests to me the wi-fi utility (chip?) is shot. Is this because Apple replacement phones are refurbished so parts can go anytime, and/or what confidence can I have that another replacement 4s phone will work under whatever the current iOS?

I never said there was 'nothing wrong with Apple'. Nor did I blame anyone in this post for having this issue.

What I said was, do the troubleshooting steps, and if it doesn't resolve the issue, get the device serviced.

That's it. Speculation or discussion of Apple policies is prohibited on this forum. I've gone on rants about things I don't like about Apple, but not here. There are other forums for that. This forum is for technical assistance.

Discussions about 'Why won't Apple address this issue' or 'Apple needs to replace these out-of-warranty devices for free', etcetera, have no place here.

Hi guys. I'm really peeved off with this, same story: since updating my iPad cannot detect wifi unless i literally place it on top of router, and then it cannot connect. I have taken my ipad around with me to test it out in other places and there was no change there. However, when I went to a genius bar meeting with it, it was suddenly picking up the Apple store's wifi and a few others around it, though i did notice none of them were password protected. The guy said it must have sorted itself out, but it hasnt. I've tried everything suggested except for heating/freezing it - that seem's pretty extreme?

Seeing as this is such a common problem i just want to know if anyone has managed to have theirs fixed or replaced by Apple for free without warranty? I'm a skint student and have always had faith in Apple products to be worth the money for their durability and long life but it looks like i was hugely mislead!

Have you followed ALL of the steps in iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections? Including updating your wi-fi router's firmware?

If it works fine in even one location (such as the Apple Store), then that proves that the device works.

Think of it this way: if your Gmail account works just fine on your iPhone, for both sending & receiving, but your Comcast email account has issues, is that a problem with the device, or a problem with the email account? If the device's Mail App was having an issue, then the Gmail wouldn't work.

It's no different here. Do all of the steps listed in that article.

I did all advised steps in this forum, however the issue of Wifi is remaining.You are right! “Wifi greying out” is not something ‘new’, but for my case, it happened right after upgrading into iOS7, before I had never similar issue (for about 2 years)! The technicians assume it`s a hardware issue, but I don`t want to have my Wifi module replaced, because I still believe it`s a software issue and it can be fixed by following all further remedies here in this forum! I will not give up 😀 ( moreover when from time to time my Wifi works after doing numerous network settings resets and restarting numerous times my poor iPhone...)

You are welcome if you have an exact solution for such cases besides providing a general solution of Apple Troubleshooting… in this way you will help us also to save time 😉

I can only add myself to the list of people having the problem.

Wifi works but for a limited time: if I try to do a FaceTime call, it disconnects after some seconds.

This happens on any WiFi network, sometimes faster, sometimes wifi works for a longer time then disconnects.

No workaround suggested so far worked (resets, reinstalls, etc).

I'm really ****** of: 2 iphones (4 and 4s) both with problems (home button, wifi) right after the end of warranty (4s still is, but I should give it back to Vodafone and wait minimum a month for a "repair"...) Apple refuses to take it back despite Italian law states they should give 2 yrs warranty... or pay extra 199€ to have a refurbished one!

Start thinking it's worst Apple product I ever had (at least the 4x series, and I have Macs, iPads, iPods).

Going to switch to Android.

Same issue here on my wife's phone. Went to an Apple store, made appointment had them check it out. Expert said they have never heard of the issue and that since my phone had just went out of warranty that I would have to pay $199 to get a new or refurbished phone. I brought in a handfull of postings directly off of the apple website and they were not interested.

We are now stuck with a phone that doesn't entirely work and 10 months left in contract.

I regret that I recently upgraded my phone to a 5S. After this I will switch to Samsung Galaxy series. I have 4 iPhones on my contract. I cross my fingers that they will last until contract ends.

I have just had the same problem. The surprisingly simple cure, which is within this whole conversation and doesn't threaten to boil your device, is to remove the SIM, crash re-start (on/off button + home button, both held down until the screen has both gone off and then the apple logo appears), connect to wifi and reinsert the SIM.

It worked for me first time, and for others according to this and other threads on this topic.

I changed from Galaxy to iphone for reliabiity, and while I have had this problem, which I have cured, I had regular problems with Samsung and was forever having to re-boot the unit. Change to Galaxy for lots of reasons, but don't do it if you expect reliability, Apple wins that one hands down.

I just used the "Youtube Hairdryer overheating" method, I had to do it twice.

Also don't forget to shut down and restart your device after the overheating message is gone.

It worked for me, everything is working fine again with my iPhone 4S with ios 7.0.4!

I had the same issue. My iPhone was not getting any IP after the upgrade to 7.0.4.

I changed the channel in the router, changed the authentication from WEP to WPA and changed the passphrase. It worked OK!

Ok, I was not going to write all this but I felt a strong need to share. MY iPHONE 4S HAS WIFI AND BLUETOOTH again after losing it with the install of iOS7.

Back on Sept. 18, 2013, I upgraded my iPhone to the Apple iOS7 operating system. As a result, I lost all wifi and Bluetooth capabilities. I went to the Apple help sites and did ALL of the so called "fixes". Some I did many times with either temporary luck or no luck. Thankfully, I have unlimited data service and could survive without wifi or Bluetooth until such a time I wanted to spend $699 to upgrade my iPhone (I have 64G) After running my iPhone 4s through my front load washer last Saturday, Jan, 18, 2014 (extra hot and extra water) I figured I had nothing to lose by trying the hair dryer & rice tricks. (I need to add that once it was washed, I NEVER tried to turn it on. I know that water and electronics don't mix.) Anyway, I removed the SIM card so it would not be damaged by the heat of the blow dryer. After heating the iPhone 4s with the blow dryer and then cooling in a bag of rice several times, at one point the iPhone got so hot that a warning message came on saying to let it cool. I put it in a bag of rice and let it cool. After about 30-45 minutes, I was walking by the counter where the iPhone was sitting and it was ringing!!!! Well dang.... I had to answer it to see if it worked and it DID!!!! After my conversation, I turned it completely off, reinstalled the SIM card and turned it back on. I went into SETTINGS and checked for wifi and bluetooth and they were both on. All I had to do was re-enter my passwordl Not only does the iPhone 4s work 5 days later.... the wifi and Bluetooth still work perfectly!!!! There must be an electronic "god" out there!!

if found this tutorial of how to fix the wifi firmware bug the unconventional way. its not your hardware its the IOS upgrade on 4s. this video explains and show's how to fix WiFi being grayed out.
