‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.
Cheers, Tom 😉

Difficult to say with no information. What happened when you connected it to a computer's iTunes ? Did it recognise it ? Did you get any error messages ? If it prompted you to allow access on the iPad did you try recovery mode ?
Device not recognised in iTunes : If iTunes doesn't recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod - Apple Support
Disabled device (includes recovery mode instructions) : If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple Support
Hi um my I pad mini has been disabled and I connect it to the iTunes's and says do u want to allow access info then says if u don't allow access u will not be able to manage sync your I pad with this computer and I pressed continue and it says to allow access please respond on ur I pad and I can't cos it's disabled
Contact Apple support over phone and they will guide how to reactivate the iPad. Can any body tell me why it got deactivated after continuous use of more than 8 years. No passcode or password. Apple support is superb and see to it that problem is resolved. My compliments to Apple support. No other company in the world can match quality of after sale service as Apple provides and that too free of cost even after 8 years of purchase. Adarsh Jain, India
Hi my 84 yr old mum has disabled her iPad. It telling us to connect to iTunes. I. Her daughter. Tried that several time s but to no advantage what can I do now

Thank you lifesaver Tom.😀
Awsome. Thanks for the good info.
But isn't this a security flow? If my Ipad is locked because someone else tried to gain entry, you mean he can do the procedure you mentioned and it will unlock my iPad?
Texas Mac Man....you are a life saver! I thought I was being smart by adding a password to my ipad so my 3 & 4 year old boys couldn't access the ipad whenever they wanted. HA! Was I ever wrong to do that! Thanks to you, my ipad is back to normal.
Forever in your debt!

This would not be a security flow as this process only works when used in conjunction with the computer that it was last synced with.
Does it show or remove your iPad password?
Here's a good picture guide I found: http://ipadtutr.com/fix-disabled-ipad/
It removes your password. It does not show your password as this is a security issue.
When I plug the ipad in I get the message stating te ipad is locked with a passcode and won't let me go any further. If I turn off the ipad, hold the home button, plug in to computer, then bring up the option to restore can I start the process and then "x" out as you describe from that point?
my ipad is disabled, how do i enable it with a new password?
