‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes

Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.

I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).

Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:

1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.

2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.

3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.

4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).

5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.

6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.

7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.

8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.

If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.

Tom!

I never get to step 5. I get to the "iPad Recovery Mode"User uploaded file

When I press "Restore iPad.." I get the screen that says:User uploaded file

I press on restore and update and as soon as I press "Next" on the following page I also agree to the software update info. Next, once the backup and restorating whichever goes first comes up I press the little 'x' next to it.

I never get anything that says "setup as new iPad" or any other steps after that. I need help because I have finals in about a week and a half and I can't loose anything from notability.

Please help!

Hi, Texas Mac man, my husband has forgotten his passcode and now disabled it! Grrrr very upset as it has photos and videos of children in Florida, I can do what you have posted but the unfortunate thing is I no longer have the PC that I used to have with I tunes on, I sold it and just use my I pads, will it still work if I downloaded iTunes on another PC? Please help, thanks luckylena09.

My iPad hasn't been out of my site all day and nor have I entered my passcode incorrectly at all but this evening when I went to use it is displaying "iPad Disabled - connect to iTunes." When I connect to iTunes (from my windows 7 pc which is the computer I have always used to sync to iTunes) I'm asked "Do you want to allow thisc computer to access information on Geri's iPad? If you don't allow access you will not be able to manage or sync your iPad with this computer." Then when I click 'continue' I get this message "To allow access please respond on your iPad." Well...I can't, because it's disabled!!

If I click on stop, my device does not show up in iTunes devices and therefore I cannot choose to set up a new iPad or any other option. There is a support document that talks about restoring the device by turning off the iPad, opening iTunes then holding the home key down while plugging in the USB connector until the device turns on and the iTunes icon appears on the screen. I'm then asked if I want to restore the device and I said yes but didn't see how to x out of the restore mode (maybe I didn't wait long enough?) so I panicked and clicked on Done and closed iTunes. No damage done but iPad is still disabled!!

Any suggestions on how to proceed? I really unhappy because I did nothing to cause this problem in the first place. I would really appreciate your advice please.
