Might be old news by now, but

Hi

Had same problem-2 solutions

1-on the left side is a swith above the volume control-if" the orange is visible it is set to "SILENT"

2- going to settings-general-accessibillity-scroll to assistive touch and turn it on.

Then you have a white circle on black square icon -tap- tap on device- tap on Mute/Unmute- Try and see if that solved the ringer problem. If it has, go back and turn assistive touch off- that might also solve the problem.

Option 1 is the most likely cause for not ringing I discovered, but option 2 might reveal the hidden muted sound issiue as well.

Hope this helps

I have had the same issue and it is operator error!!

The Otterbox case issue is a red herring.

You have to be sure the small switch near the top left on the side above the volume controls is not showing red. This can be changed by flicking up the switch so the red does not show.

But here is the thing.

According to settings, you can select do not disturb always and according to what it says all income is silenced.

You can also select only when locked which is odd since it self locks to save power.

What I found is the phone rings in either setting.

My issue was the switch.

I tried everything and nothing worked - I checked the volume setting, the mute side-switch, the Do Not Disturb - all were ok.

Finally what I did was to do a reset (hold the back and power buttons for 15 secs) then in settings, I changed the ringer tone to a different one.

Called myself from a different phone and hey presto it worked! Changed it back to my old tone, tested it again and it's all fixed. No idea what caused it but it's back

This has randomly happened to me as well. I figured out why it happens with the iOS7 update. It's in the control panel! If you have ever been scrolling and incidentally pulled up the control panel, you most likely inadvertently clicked on the do not disturb icon--the moon. It can be deselected also in the control panel as well as in settings.

I would like to thank you! I've been trying for weeks to find the solution to my problem and nobody seem to know how to help me. I tried everything the help desk asked me to do and nothing was working. I was getting ready to have my phone replaced. But now thanks to you, my phone is working again!! Once again, thank you for sharing your knowledge for people like me!

"2- going to settings-general-accessibillity-scroll to assistive touch and turn it on."

THAT worked for me... and that was after a trip to Apple failed to fix it, they said 'Hardware fault' allegedly.

It was not as simple as that line implies, Assistive touch is a complex beast and the Mute/Unmute button's mode confused me. It displays what will happen rather than the current state. Also, Assistive Touch is a set of menus accessed via the new circle icon thing. Navigate through that - and set the state right - and all was well.

That's what comes from fiddling with all the hidden settings.

NOTHING shows this mute action is in force, the phone just wont ring !

I have tried all the suggested fixes here and none of them have worked. My iPhone 5 does not ring for phone calls - or even register phone calls in my call history and I receive no notification of a missed call. It's not the speaker because the speaker works for other sounds / notifications. It's not the switch or DND setting or an assistive touch setting. A hard reset and restore didn't solve the problem; I am extremely frustrated!

To digger07,

I regularly search the Internet for solutions to technical problems as I work in IT - it's a hugely frustrating job - however I rarely respond to posts or pop up comments as I just don't have the time...... however, in this case I am making an exception.

Thank you so much for your post - option 2 actually solved the problem of my wifes iPhone4 not ringing. It's been like that for several months. Tried lots of things - just about everything, checking all settings, resetting all settings, even wipe and setup as a new iPhone - all to no avail.

As a last resort after doing a backup and restore - I tried the accessibility options - turned on assistive touch and the solution was selecting "unmute" in here.

Then voila!

Thank you so much - this was my last resort before a new purchase.....

Version of iOS is 5.1.1 (I know, I know) - but why do I have to for an older phone?!!

Once again, thanks a million.

Hope this helps someone else!

Kind Regards,
Eamon.

Thanks. I too was getting a ring tone whilst calling from my landline, but not from my other cellphone!

The first time it happened was a month ago. After fiddling around unsuccessfully with various ringtones, I desperately tried 'Settings-General-Reset' with some trepidation, not knowing what would result! Luckily it worked, and my alerts resumed.

However, my incoming calls and messages again stopped giving an alert earlier today. That's when the (relatively unfamiliar for me) idea of checking on the net occured to me.

Fortunately! Because after reading your post I checked, and discovered tht my setting too had also changed inexplicably to 'Settings-Do Not Disturb-Allow Calls From-Favourites'.

Once I reset 'Favourites' to 'Everyone', the alerts have resumed.

So thanks again.

Just to be on the safe side, I also checked 'Settings-Accessibility-Assistive Touch-On' and tapped on the 'Black Square with White Circle' icon, which give me the first set of menus with 'Device' as one of the options.

Tapping 'Device' opened a new set of menus where I confirmed that the setting for Mute/Unmute was correctly set to 'Unmute', indicated by a bell with a line across it, with the option to 'Mute' available below the icon.

Of course I retraced my steps carefully and switched 'Assistive Touch' to 'Off'.

I suspect that it is a bug in the OS that triggers an unintended change in the settings on some arcane inputs! Hope Apple is aware and actively attending to it.

I've had this problem for several weeks. I tried several different things. The first time I noticed that it seemed like my phone was randomly forwarding calls to voice mail. So I called *73, and then it worked for a while but reverted to the same behavior. Finally I realize after reading these posts more closely, it Do Not Disturb settings. They are very confusing. I've tried turning off the Manual setting and then allowing calls from All Contacts. Hope that will solve the problem once and for all.

This problem is not limited to Otter Box cases. After reading this thread I discovered my $100 LifeProof case was turning on the Silent button above the volume buttons. Took several tries -- with the phone on -- to get it in the case without the Silent switch getting moved! Kind of a crappy location for such an easily changed switch.
