"The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." With "My Book For Mac" 3Tb External HardDrive?

Hi there, i have the same problem. I have been using this external HD for 2 years. I was just putting a file on it and it failed and the 'The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer' error appeared. Does anyone know how to fix this. I have loads of important files on the HD.

I too am getting the message on start-up after installing Mavericks. I can ignore or eject but it does not matter, all my external drives show and are working fine, (nothing ejects if I chose eject).

I plugged each drive separately to find out which one was causing the problem and it is my older "My Book" I use for TimeMachine. I did repair in disk utility and nothing was found wrong. Backups are happening as usual and I can access them in TimeMachine just fine.

So, why am I still getting this message on start-up?

I've been getting that message since long before Mavericks. I just click Ignore and (so far) everything works fine on both my external WDs. But I would like the pesky warnings to go away.

I think this is a compatibility issue with Mavericks. Pre-Mavericks I had something on my WD external called WD SmartDrive, which is horrible and I wish was never there. But, it behaved like a drive, and needed ejecting to go away. Seems as if Mavericks doesn't like it from the start and gives us that message.

I find it annoying, too. At least, it's less annoying than the "SmartDrive"

I know what you mean about the irritating WD SmartDrive. But as I mentioned before, I was getting these idiotic error messages probably two years before Mavericks, so I don't see how they can have anything to do with Mavericks.

It's astonishing that Western Digital can't get its externals to work more smoothly with modern Macs.

I think you are correct with this issue for me. It did not start until Mavericks. And yes - so annoying!!

If the options listed above does not work for you, try opening your mac, unplug the hard drive. Plug it back in, and try erasing it again. Although this is a last resort option, it worked in my situation twice. good luck 🙂 And don't forget to back up as always!

yeah, nevermind. in my case I forgot to create an image for the disk...

This is my problem. I have too much data on it to erase it. I did that when I first got it. I did do something stupid though. I right clicked on it and encrypted it so to keep other users from getting to the info on it. The it just disappeared. Shows up in disk utility but it won't mount now. Any suggestions? Thanks

I also had an encrypted disk that became not readable. I found in a discussion that the problem was with VMware, as a last attempt I uninstalled my version of parallels desktop, and right after that my disk appeared !
