I think there is a misunderstanding. That option only stops your apps from auto updating. It has nothing to do with the auto download of the iOS update.

The auto app update option is turned off on all my iOS devices. I forgot to turn off WiFi when charging one of my iPhones and the 7.1 update started to download immediately.

Apple really needs to add an on/off switch for this as well....

This is what is looks like when Apple forces their updates on you! I am JailBroken and now have 3+ GBs used up that I need for my work and school documents. Apple!

What is anoying is that iTunes thinks there is space avialable, until you try to sync.

Here is how I resolved this on a JailBroken device:

Intall iFile, Brows to the first screen last folder MibleSoftwareUpdate... delete it!

iOS 4 did not have OTA downloads. The capability to download automatically was not present. It was necessary to connect to iTunes via USB for updates, downloads of apps, music etc. We upgraded to iOS 5 via USB to iTunes.

iOS 6 downloaded automatically if the device was on WiFi while connected to AC. Same with iOS 7. The download does not automatically install but the download is there and space is lost, unfortunately.

Some users shoot video to full the unused capacity. The lack of space prevents the wuto download.

Your uninformed opinions and irrelevant comments are not helping. This thread is specifically about how to delete the auto download of IOS 7x onto our personal property against our wishes. This is not a discussion about which IOS you prefer nor is your miss informed comment about turning off updates helping but mislead anyone whom is not somewhat knowledgable on this subject. As explained earlier turning off updates is app related only and does not apply to IOS 7x auto downloads to which this very long thread is about.

As a suggestion you can also block the auto download from your router, it works great if your device never leaves the house ( like wifi iPad) but alas one of my iPhones was filled up with this unwanted download when on another wifi and it was to late. Hence my involvement in this thread.

Sure would like to get my storage space back.

I like to add to the solution you proposed, and did the following:

1. blocked Apple's update servers (mesu.apple.com) at my router

2. factory resetted my iPad3, which of course was running iOS 6

3. After reconfiguring the device, I installed "Weblock", actually an ad-blocking ad, from the Appstore

4. blocked mesu.apple.com inside Weblock

The advantage of this solution is you can use it with any WiFi, even leaving home, to avoid these nagging unwanted updates. Or, rather, downgrades.

If you decide not to factory reset, you can still block new updates from being downloaded using Weblock. I guess there are similar apps, but I haven't checked because it does the trick for me.

As I said, I haven't checked. Perhaps there are other blockers offering customizable blacklists for free. That's the needed functionality, and of course compatibillity with iOS 6. It would be a pity if there were only paid for solutions to this burden Apple brought upon us. But in my case, where the iPad also downloads the unwanted data over costly 3G, it's still worthwhile. Good luck finding a free ad/web-blocker!
