Method B: Open Settings->General->Software Update, Click "Install Now". There will be a prompt says "Verifying update...", Wait until this prompt disappear, there will be a spinning wheel on the black background. Immediately press and hold both of the power and home buttons at the same time. DO NOT release the power and home buttons for about 10 seconds. Your device will reboot. It's done. The automatically downloaded firmware will have been deleted. Now read part 1 to prevent automatically downloading in the future."

Holy crap. This worked perfectly. I charged my iPad this morning and forgot to switch networks...and low and behold 7.0.6 slipped into the mix and took up 2.9GB of space.

So I figured I would try method B and lo and behold - it worked. Even my "1" badge on the Settings icon vanished.

Thanks again!

I totally agree wiht you, is an insult to our freedom of choice. We should be able to control of what we want to download and choose what iOS version we WANT to install in our devices, update my iPad 2 to iOS 7 is the worst thing I ever did to my device, it's crippled, it is slow on everything, and some old GREAT apps not works anymore. Besides the iOS 7 design *****!

Can this be done on an iPad 2 16gig, now? I would love to delete the pushed, downloaded and stored ios 7.1 update, which I understand is 1.4 gigs!? There's so much contradictory info out there, I'm tired of even reading about it.

Infact, I'm trying to resist unleashing a tirade on Apple and their methodology which has been building up for months... or the temptation to just take the **** thing apart and make some kind of sculpture out of the pieces......

For what's it's worth - I updated to 7.1 last night on my iPad 2 - and it was well worth the upgrade. As long as you are cool with the new UI.

The device is fast, snappy and quite frankly - feels like it's working better than it did with 6.1.x.

Your call.

For some people, Ios 7 is unusable. I am visually impaired and the horribly thin font is practically invisible to me, even with bold setting on. My ipad 4 (which I specifically bought because it had Ios 6) automatically downloaded Ios7 without my consent. I haven't installed it, because I can't read anything on it, but I am angry that I am losing memory for something I did not choose to download. You would think after being sued they would fix the issue, but apparently they don't care! Or maybe the forced downloads make it look like people are happy with ios 7 when many people are not!

Anyone figured out how to delete this auto downloaded IOS 7 safely yet ? I have since found out how to successfully block the auto download via my router but my valuable space has already been stolen on my iPhone. I also got charged extra money for the 6 gigs of bandwidth Apple used against my wishes.

I would really like to get my privately owned and very limited storage space back because after all it is my property.

Isn't it?

As far as I know there is only one way to delete an iOS 7 update that auto downloaded and that is to use the "Erase All Contents & Settings" option under Reset in the Settings app. This erases all date from your iPhone/iPad including the update file. You will then have to manually ad your apps, music and other data again.

As far as I know there are only two ways of preventing the file from re-downloading again. One is to ensure that WiFi is turned off when charging or when syncing with iTunes via the USB cable. The second option is to fill your device so that there is only 2 to 3 GB of free space left. The iOS 7 update requires ±3.7GB of free space to install. The file will not download if there is not enough space to install it.

I really, really hope that Apple will include an on/off switch (similar to the one for auto app updates) for the iOS updates in a future version. I do not like the OTA updates and will not use it. Updating through iTunes is much safer...
