Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do. IPod 4th gen cannot install iOS7, since it does not have the technical capability to handle iOS 7. That's why you're getting the "your software is up to date" message.

Basically no!

You haven't said what the device is but on iPhone or iPod it would be impossible. They are not like a PC and the RAM is incorporated in the main board at the factory. Even if you could identify the component I doubt you would be able to get a replacement, and you would need a microscope to find it. Soldering would probably damage the device beyond repair

it would be cheaper to buy a newer device, if you want an iphone you could probably get a 4S for about £100 (less than $150)

(and even if you somehow managed, the device would still not be recognised as compatible with later OS so nothing would be available to download)

Presumably you are looking for an iPod - have a look at eBay for iPhone 4 or 4S. Whilst phones you could use the features without a SIM card. There was one for £23 - about $30

Look for those that are network locked as they are usually cheaper, if all you want is the iPod features it won't matter if you can't use as a phone

And the iPhone 4S can run IOS 9

Well, okay so, I am 16 and my friend gave me his old iPod Touch 4G running IOS 6.1.6. I don't have any money and going to my original post, if I did have to buy a RAM chip it had to be, like, $10 maybe so I can convince my parents. We are really poor and don't have money to be throwing around on luxuries. I didn't really want to say that cuz then someone's gonna say, then why did you make the post in the first place if you didn't have money, but you started talking about buying one so I guess maybe you could help me in general. So my parents might allow me to buy one off of ebay if it doesn't cost them any money so I'm thinking I could sell my 4G and buy a 5G in order to update to the current IOS, because I checked and a 5G is compatible. They don't want me to be able to call or text so an iPhone might not appeal to them unless I can prove to them that it wont cost any money and it wont have those features. Yes, I know there are apps you can buy on the iPod 4G that allows it to be kind of like a phone, but SHHHHH, they don't know that, and as long as I don't use them, they wont find out and take it away. Sorry for the extremely long post off of a simple question but you sound like you genuinely want to help me so I thought I'd give it a shot.

It wouldn't be a problem, except the fact that they no longer produce any apps that are compatible with lower than ios 7. That is the problem. It would be wonderful if I could still enjoy my ipod and download things that I might enjoy. Unfortunately, Apple is only catering to people who are buying newer products and not concerned with customers from early years. So basically they are saying, hey you haven't spent nearly enough money on us in recent years, so it's time for an upgrade or you're screwed. Have fun with that!!! It's very frustrating!!!!! 😟

The last version of many apps compatible with older iOS versions are available:

Starting when iOS 7 was released, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)

Install the latest compatible version of an app on an earlier version of iOS or OS X

You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.

No.

iPod 4th generation is, now, a nearly 7 year old mobile device.

So, it has been unsupported since iOS 6.1.1 which already, then, made the iPod Touch 4 an almost 4 year old mobile device.

iOS 7 was totally revamped from the ground up and was made incompatible with older mobile hardware models.

Apple has always done this.

Apple is not Microsoft or Google.

Apple is not going to continue supporting 5-10 year old legacy hardware with software that may cripple both older conpatible mobile devices and new/er mobile devices.
